Official: Johor zoo to launch night safari before year is out
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 9 — Johor Zoo's night safari is set to open by the end of this year, according to state executive councillor Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor.
The state government has approved RM5 million for phase two of the zoo's upgrading works, which will begin in the first quarter of the year.
According to The Star, Mohd Jafni said the upgrades will include better facilities, making 80 per cent of the zoo more accessible for the elderly, people with disabilities, and parents with strollers.
'Additionally, we aim to launch the night safari in the fourth quarter of this year,' he was quoted as saying.
He said the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) is also planning to invest RM10 million to develop a new carpark opposite the zoo to accommodate an increase in visitors.
Authorities are further considering using a parking area near the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque and adding a pedestrian crossing for safer access to the zoo.
Additionally, there are plans to create 200 more parking bays at the Ayer Molek Prison site, which currently serves as the zoo's main parking area.
MBJB is exploring the possibility of converting the old prison into a weekend night market to complement the night safari.
Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi previously mooted the night safari as a way to further increase visitors to the state's zoo.
Johor Zoo, which houses 373 animals from 65 species, has welcomed 500,000 visitors since reopening on August 31 last year following RM9.6 million in upgrades over three years.

Nanta: 50pc toll discount for private vehicles on March 28 and 29 in conjunction with Hari Raya
KUALA LUMPUR, March 26 — The government will offer a 50 per cent toll discount for private vehicles on March 28 and 29 in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the Cabinet approved the toll discount during its meeting today, according to The Star. 'The toll discount will be implemented from 12.01am on March 28 (Friday) until 11.59pm on March 29 (Saturday),' he said in a statement. He said the Madani government will pay an estimated RM19.69 million in compensation to all toll concessionaires to cover the discount. The discount applies only to Class 1 private vehicles at all toll plazas, except at border toll plazas, specifically the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) Toll on the North-South Expressway and the Tanjung Kupang Toll Plaza on the Malaysia-Singapore Second Link Expressway (Linkedua). Nanta Linggi said the initiative continues the festive toll relief programme introduced by the Madani government in 2023 for all four major festive seasons in Peninsular Malaysia. 'It aligns with the core principles of the government — well-being and compassion — aimed at easing the cost of living for the people,' he said. He urged highway users to plan their journeys wisely and follow the travel time advisory from highway concessionaires to avoid congestion during the long holiday. 'Ensure that vehicles are in good condition, maintain sufficient eWallet balance and Touch 'n Go card balance, and check that the SmartTAG battery is fully charged,' he said. He also advised commuters to use the Malaysian Highway Authority's (LLM) online CCTV display at for real-time traffic conditions. The Works Ministry, LLM and highway concessionaires urged drivers to follow traffic rules, drive safely and take breaks if they feel tired. 'Let us work together to maintain safety, cleanliness and comfort on the highways while reducing accidents,' Nanta Linggi said. The public can contact the LLM Traffic Management Centre at 1-800-88-7752 for the latest traffic updates or assistance. Trump visits Daytona 500 as NASCAR season begins
President Donald Trump paid a flying visit to the Daytona 500 on Sunday, saluting the iconic race as a celebration of American culture as the NASCAR season got under way. In the latest visit by Trump to a high-profile sporting event, Air Force One performed a flyover of the Daytona International Speedway before the race.
