Gilbert Arenas Blames Son's Car Accident On Tesla Cybertruck Malfunction
Gilbert Arenas' son, Alijah, got into a car accident on April 24 after he 'lost control' of his Tesla Cybertruck in the San Fernando Valley.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the vehicle crashed into a tree and/or fire hydrant. Footage obtained by TMZ showed the 18-year-old's car on fire as two people attempted to remove him from the Cybertruck.
However, during a recent appearance on the All The Smoke podcast, the NBA veteran blames the crash on the car's defect. 'The car malfunctioned on him,' Arenas explained. 'The steering wheel went limp and ran him right into a tree.'
The 43-year-old continued, 'He couldn't break the window […] He was on the phone with 911 for 10 minutes. He realized he couldn't break the window. If you're a parent and your teen has this car, you might want to put a hammer in that joint— something that will break the window. Physically, he said he was tryna kick the window and he couldn't.'
After the accident, Alijah was transported to a hospital and placed in a medically-induced coma because of smoke inhalation. He was released six days later and then, it was confirmed in a statement that he hadn't suffered any 'major injuries' as a result of the crash.
'The Govan and Arenas family are preparing for the road ahead with faith and determination, committed to nurturing Alijah back to 100%. He remains blessed, resilient, and in high spirits,' said the Arenas family in a statement.
When reflecting on the crash, Arenas said that he gave Alijah a speech when he came home. 'I said, 'Listen, you're a lucky one to see this. Most people don't get to see the flowers and how everyone reacts when something happens,' he recalled. 'You get to witness what the world did when you were in an induced coma. You can't take this s**t for granted.''

Electric Truck Battery Demand Increased More Than 70% Last Year, Future Is Uncertain
The latest car news, reviews, and features. Electric trucks aren't all that green, aren't that practical, and aren't cheap. Still, a market exists for pickups like the Ford F-150 Lightning, and it grew big time last year. The International Energy Agency reports that in 2024, the demand for electric truck batteries grew by more than 70% compared to 2023. That trend might not continue. IEA data shows that in 2023, electric truck battery demand sat at 14 gigawatt-hours; it was up to 24 gigawatt-hours in 2024. That data mostly tracks with the sales figures of top EV pickups like the aforementioned F-150 Lightning, which leapt from 24,165 units sold in 2023 to 33,510 last year—a roughly 39% increase. The Blue Oval alone doesn't make up the difference, but you also have to factor in new vehicles that either went on sale late in 2023 or early in 2024. Undeniably, the biggest influence was is the Tesla Cybertruck, with approximately 39,000 registrations in its first full sales year. Vehicle sales are a key factor in overall battery demand, though they aren't all that matters. Battery capacity is crucial, and it also varies greatly across the board. While a Tesla Cybertruck can be had with a 123-kilowatt-hour battery pack, the Chevy Silverado EV can be packaged with a 200-kWh pack. It doesn't take as many Silverado EVs to equal the same battery demand as a parking lot full of Cybertrucks. Electric pickup sales are already sliding in 2025. The Cybertruck is pacing for fewer than 30,000 sales this year based on first-quarter figures, and while the F-150 Lightning leads it slightly, it doesn't look likely to exceed last year's performance. The Silverado EV and its GMC Sierra EV twins are climbing, though not at a great enough pace to offset the fall of other models. Other categories of EV battery demand were on the rise in 2024, too, including a big leap for light-duty vehicles. That alone isn't surprising, considering smaller passenger EVs are the biggest relevant market by far, but the jump from 713 gWh in 2023 to 884 gWh last year represents a 24% increase. Recording reveals what Tesla training instructor told staff about company culture
A weeklong factory-wide shutdown at the Tesla factory in Austin featured training events for staffers who didn't take time off — including one focusing on improving company culture. Business Insider obtained a recording of the session at which an internal training instructor asked staff at Elon Musk's electric vehicle company to raise their hands if they felt their team's culture could be improved. The instructor called for people to respond if they'd ever felt "I can't work under these conditions" or had felt set back by constant change at the company. "I know I have," the instructor told the employees. "A lot of people leave this company, and they have kind of a negative taste in their mouth," the instructor said. "They think: 'Man, it was terrible. It was bad. I got burnt out. I feel like I didn't get anything done, nobody listened to me.'" A spokesperson for Tesla did not respond to a request for comment. Tesla halted production at the Austin factory, which runs production lines for its Cybertruck and Model Y, for the week of Memorial Day. During the week, workers could choose between taking paid time off or coming into the factory for cleaning and training, according to three people with knowledge of the issue. It is unclear why Tesla chose to halt production for the week. At the factory, several hundred Tesla employees attended cleaning and training events during the shutdown, including the session focused on improving company culture, three people said. The instructor of that training encouraged staff to take some responsibility for Tesla's culture and a more active role in improving it. "Leadership has kind of another level of responsibility for trying to guide and direct that culture," the instructor said. "But at the end of the day, it's us as the people on the ground that are the reflection of the culture." The recording offers a rare glimpse into how Tesla is handling employee morale at a time when the electric-car maker is grappling with lackluster sales, growing public scrutiny, and some signs of internal dissent from its workforce. The instructor told participants the culture training was usually reserved for leadership but they'd decided to share it more widely. "Hopefully you can walk out of here with almost a different sense of purpose than just the job itself," the trainer said. "We want you to think about the higher purpose," they added. The company also held trainings on improving efficiency on the line and environmental health and safety. Two workers said the recent trainings and the weeklong shutdown were unusual for the carmaker. In April, the carmaker reported a 13% drop in deliveries. Over the past few months, the company has faced backlash as a result of Musk's ties to President Donald Trump. On Friday, Musk officially stepped back from his work at the Department of Government Efficiency. He has said he will and spend more of his time focusing on Tesla.
