KTMB receives two of 10 new ETS trains, testing underway
BUTTERWORTH: Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) has received two out of 10 new Electric Train Service (ETS) trains worth RM400mil, which are expected to be gradually deployed for operations starting 2026.
ETS and Intercity Services general manager Nurul Azha Mokmin said that both train sets are currently undergoing testing and commissioning.
She said that its acquisition aims to enhance both the quality and capacity of the ETS service, which continues to see strong demand.
"ETS passenger numbers grow by about 10% annually, indicating high user satisfaction. With the upcoming completion of the Gemas (Negri Sembilan) to Johor Baru (Johor) route, KTMB plans to expand ETS services to several new destinations.
"We have procured 10 ETS train sets, which are expected to operate on the Gemas-Johor Bahru route. Subsequently, new routes from Johor Baru to Butterworth and Padang Besar (Perlis) will also be introduced," she said on Thursday (June 5) after officiating the Ruby Lounge at Butterworth Station, an exclusive waiting area for ETS business class passengers and attending the distribution of Aidiladha souvenir packs by KTMB chief technical officer Ahmad Nizam Mohamed Amin.
She added that over 250,000 ETS and Intercity train tickets, including additional tickets released for the Aidiladha celebration, had been sold since sales began on May 29.
She said this included the sale of 119,000 tickets for the Ekspres Selatan service, which covers the Johor Baru-Gemas route, and remains in high demand.
"KTMB is also continuing its special service, the Ekspres Lambaian Aidiladha, for the KL Sentral-Tumpat and Tumpat-KL Sentral routes, as in previous years. This year, the service offers two trips, with a total of 872 tickets available," she said.
One-way fares range from RM80 to RM95, with options including premier and superior class seating, superior class sleeping coaches, as well as 'chillax' and cafe coaches for added passenger comfort.
As of now, she said that 762 out of the 872 tickets have been sold. The train is scheduled to depart tonight and return to KL Sentral on June 8. – Bernama

Bank Rakyat Launches ‘Kembara Qurban Kemboja 2025' To Support Cambodian Muslims
KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 (Bernama) -- Bank Rakyat today launched the 'Kembara Qurban Kemboja 2025' programme by sending a delegation to support the Muslim community in Cambodia in conjunction with the Aidiladha celebration tomorrow. Its deputy chief executive officer, Nor Haimee Zakaria, said a total of 45 cows will be handed over for the 'qurban' (sacrificial ritual) and distributed to Muslim residents of Kampung Trapeng Prinh and Kampung Keh in Cambodia. He said the programme aims to assist underprivileged rural communities while expanding Bank Rakyat's community outreach efforts abroad. 'This qurban initiative, implemented since 2015, has benefited various communities, particularly the 'asnaf' group,' he said in a statement today. He said Bank Rakyat, together with its strategic partners, also distributed basic food aid to 150 families in Kampung Swai Relom, Kandal Province, with each family receiving 10 kilogrammes of rice. The strategic partners for the programme are Maahad Imam Syafi'e (MIS) Kampung Keh, Kampot; Wakaf Endowmen Zakat Khairat and Sedekah Centre (WEZAS) of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI); Yayasan As-Syafi'e; and Shafi'e Charitable Association. 'Upin' and 'Ipin' to be sacrificed for this year's Aidiladha
TWO cows, named 'Upin' and 'Ipin' and weighing 800kg and 780kg respectively, are part of a group of 22 high-quality cattle set to be sacrificed at the Tayyib Ranch Qurban Carnival 2025, held in conjunction with this year's Aidiladha celebrations. Mohd Sakhedan Sidek, Managing Director of Tayyib Ranch Sdn Bhd, shared that these Limousin cattle will be slaughtered at the carnival site located at Shah Alam Stadium tomorrow. They were purchased by different buyers for RM20,000 and RM25,000 respectively. Besides Upin and Ipin, the Qurban offerings include breeds such as Brahman, Charolais, Blonde, and Black Angus, all aged between three and four years. These cattle come from Kelantan and Terengganu, weigh between 700kg and 1,000kg, and are priced from RM10,000 up to RM45,000. Mohd Sakhedan noted that the demand for premium sacrificial cattle has been steadily increasing as more people appreciate the value of selecting top-grade animals for Qurban.
