KTMB receives two of 10 new ETS trains, testing underway

The Star05-06-2025
BUTTERWORTH: Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) has received two out of 10 new Electric Train Service (ETS) trains worth RM400mil, which are expected to be gradually deployed for operations starting 2026.
ETS and Intercity Services general manager Nurul Azha Mokmin said that both train sets are currently undergoing testing and commissioning.
She said that its acquisition aims to enhance both the quality and capacity of the ETS service, which continues to see strong demand.
"ETS passenger numbers grow by about 10% annually, indicating high user satisfaction. With the upcoming completion of the Gemas (Negri Sembilan) to Johor Baru (Johor) route, KTMB plans to expand ETS services to several new destinations.
"We have procured 10 ETS train sets, which are expected to operate on the Gemas-Johor Bahru route. Subsequently, new routes from Johor Baru to Butterworth and Padang Besar (Perlis) will also be introduced," she said on Thursday (June 5) after officiating the Ruby Lounge at Butterworth Station, an exclusive waiting area for ETS business class passengers and attending the distribution of Aidiladha souvenir packs by KTMB chief technical officer Ahmad Nizam Mohamed Amin.
She added that over 250,000 ETS and Intercity train tickets, including additional tickets released for the Aidiladha celebration, had been sold since sales began on May 29.
She said this included the sale of 119,000 tickets for the Ekspres Selatan service, which covers the Johor Baru-Gemas route, and remains in high demand.
"KTMB is also continuing its special service, the Ekspres Lambaian Aidiladha, for the KL Sentral-Tumpat and Tumpat-KL Sentral routes, as in previous years. This year, the service offers two trips, with a total of 872 tickets available," she said.
One-way fares range from RM80 to RM95, with options including premier and superior class seating, superior class sleeping coaches, as well as 'chillax' and cafe coaches for added passenger comfort.
As of now, she said that 762 out of the 872 tickets have been sold. The train is scheduled to depart tonight and return to KL Sentral on June 8. – Bernama

Mayor Walk returns this year to promote health, community spirit

The event, which is expected to attract 10,000 participants, will kick off at 6am at the MBKS Boulevard here. All registered participants will stand a chance to win exciting lucky draw prizes. At a press conference yesterday, Kuching South mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the initiative, first introduced in 2017, is part of the council's Youth, Culture, and Sports programme. It reflects the Kuching South City Council's (MBKS) mission to foster healthy lifestyles, encourage public participation, and strengthen community bonds. 'Mayor Walk brings together people of all ages, from young children to senior citizens, encouraging families and friends to walk side by side in a spirit of togetherness. 'It reinforces Kuching South's identity as a caring, safe, and inclusive city,' said Wee. The event also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). These goals guide MBKS in creating impactful and sustainable programmes that promote balance, awareness, and a connection with nature. Wee acknowledged the crucial role of sponsors in making the event a large-scale annual success. Among the key contributors are Ibraco Berhad, which has supported the event since 2018 by contributing RM80,000 worth of T-shirts; 38 Yayasan Amal Cinta, which has been a T-shirt sponsor since 2023; Chagee, which donated RM10,000 along with 600 free drink vouchers valued at RM10,140; and Lalamove, which donated RM20,000 and 10,000 branded hand fans. Other sponsors and supporters include Premier Echo Sound and Light System Sdn Bhd, which provide the sound system; Revive, which contributed 10,800 canned drinks for participants; Sarawak Energy Berhad, which contributed RM10,000; Go Beyond, WG Cycle, and Kok Siong, which contributed lucky draw items; and City Joggers Club (CJC), which has served as an event partner since 2017, assisting with planning, coordination, and volunteer mobilisation. Participants are reminded to collect their event T-shirts at the MBKS lobby on Friday (Aug 15), from 9am to 4pm, or on Saturday (Aug 16), from 9am to 1pm. Wee stressed that participants must bring their registration QR code for verification, as T-shirt collection will not be possible without it. community healthy lifestyle Mayor Walk Wee Hong Seng

Sime UMW spending up to RM375mil for FY26

PETALING JAYA: Sime Darby Bhd 's (Sime) unit, Sime UMW, formerly UMW Holdings Bhd , is ramping up capital expenditure (capex) to RM375mil for the financial year ending June 30, 2026 (FY26) from about RM300mil in FY25. Although a diversified conglomerate with businesses spanning automotive, equipment, manufacturing and engineering and aerospace, about 85% of Sime UMW's earnings come from its automotive division. Sime UMW owns a 38% stake in Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua), alongside Daihatsu Motor Co Ltd with 25%, MBM Resources Bhd with 20%, Permodalan Nasional Bhd with 10% and Mitsui & Co Ltd with the remaining 7%. Daihatsu, in turn, is wholly owned by Toyota Motor Corp. Sime UMW also owns a 51% stake in UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd, the joint venture responsible for the manufacturing and sale of Toyota vehicles in Malaysia, with the remaining 49% held by Toyota and its affiliate. Most of the upcoming capex will go into new models and facelifts for Toyota, said Sime UMW managing director Datuk Mustamir Mohamad. He said Perodua's pipeline includes a B-segment sport utility vehicle – similar to Thailand's Yaris Cross – due in 2026, and a full model change for the Myvi in 2027. The long-awaited Perodua electric vehicle (EV) also will debut by year-end, priced around RM80,000, he added. But Mustamir said: ' Battery costs are still very high – up to 50% of total cost. We're working with a foreign engineering firm, separate from Daihatsu, and we'll disclose more in October.' The initial EV production volume is modest, around 6,000 units annually. Malaysia is looking to rationalise its blanket fuel subsidy for RON95, but about 85% of the population – largely the B40 and M40 groups – are expected to remain eligible. On this, Mustamir said it is unlikely to dent Perodua's momentum, given that its core customers fall within the subsidised income segments. 'There's also a possibility that some T15 consumers may downgrade to smaller cars to save on fuel, which could drive demand for Perodua models,' he said. 'At the same time, those looking at fuel savings may pivot to hybrids, where Toyota has a strong portfolio.' Meanwhile, incentives for fully imported or CBU EVs are set to expire by end-2025. Perodua currently exports CBU units to markets such as Brunei, Sri Lanka and Indonesia, but export volumes remain below 1% of domestic sales. Mustamir said this was largely due to a persistent backlog in local demand. While the backlog has declined from over 100,000 units to about 80,000 currently, he said Perodua continues to prioritise domestic deliveries. 'Domestic demand remains strong,' he said. The Malaysian Automotive Association expects total industry volume or TIV to normalise to around 780,000 units in 2025, from a record 817,000 in 2024. Mustamir, however, sees the year ending closer to 800,000, with demand potentially hovering between 800,000 and 850,000 in the coming years. On exports, Mustamir noted that margins were thinner due to higher logistics and set-up costs. 'The competition is tougher and there are local content requirements for CKD units,' he said. Still, he said Perodua has long-term plans to grow exports. Sime completed its RM5.84bil acquisition of Sime UMW in 2024, buying a 61.2% stake from Permodalan Nasional Bhd for RM3.57bil in 2023, followed by a mandatory general offer for the remaining 38.8% at about RM2.27bil.

Sejati MADANI project boosts Gua Musang economy with cucumber farming

GUA MUSANG: The government has allocated RM100,000 under the 'Program Sejahtera Komuniti MADANI' (SejaTi MADANI) to assist the Kampung Batu Papan community in increasing their income through a hanging fertigation cucumber cultivation project. Kampung Batu Papan Federal Village Development and Security Committee (JPKKP) Chairman, Mohd Iskandar Abu Bakar, said the project, which began last August, is now in its third season and has sold over 15 tonnes of cucumbers. He said RM80,000 of the allocation was utilised for the fertigation project, including land rental, equipment purchase, and working capital, while the remaining RM20,000 was allocated for a recycling project in the village. 'This fertigation planting only takes 45 days for each season before the produce can be harvested. The period begins with sowing seeds in 2,000 polybags until the cucumbers mature and are ready for the market,' he told reporters in Kampung Batu Papan today. Meanwhile, Kampung Batu Papan Cucumber Fertigation Project Manager Muhammad Farid Abdul Hadi, 37, said the harvest is sold to wholesalers and at three supermarkets in Gua Musang, Kuala Lipis, and Raub, Pahang, at RM1.50 per kilogram. 'The third season began on June 16 and is now in its third week of harvesting and sales. So far, about 4,000 kilograms of cucumbers have been harvested, and we expect yields to exceed 7,000 kilograms for this season,' he said. Resident Junainah Saeroni, 45, said the SejaTi MADANI initiative has provided job opportunities and additional income for residents. 'Every day at 5 pm, I, along with three friends, go to the farm to collect the produce and pack the cucumbers for sale. I am grateful to the government for providing this initiative, which helps improve the community's economy,' she said. - Bernama
