The popular Tamralipta Express has a waitlist of over 100. The waitlist begins as early as June 24, with the non-AC bogies seeing a waitlist of 91 and the AC chair car at 20. On June 27, the waitlist stands at 117 and 67, respectively.
The chair car tickets for Kandari Express, which leaves Howrah in the afternoon and reaches Digha in the evening, are waitlisted at 15 and 19 on June 26 and 27. Railway officials advise passengers to keep checking for tickets as cancellations might open up seats.
"We're monitoring the situation closely and will take necessary steps to accommodate the rush," said a senior Railways official.
"I've been trying to book tickets on Tamralipta Express for three days now. Everything seems full," said Shankha Banerjee, a Bhowanipore resident who plans to attend the Rath Yatra at the new temple with his family. "We might have to drive down now, though we are worried about parking and traffic arrangements."
For many, this is a unique opportunity. "Witnessing the first Rath Yatra at Digha's new temple complex is special. That's why we booked tickets a month in advance," said Ashok Dutta, a retired government employee from Jadavpur.
The pre-bookings have started even on buses to Digha, a rare development given such rush is witnessed only on the Kolkata-Siliguri route but rarely for Digha. There are eight operators, including government ones run by NBSTC and WBTC, and there are queries on apps and even the Esplanade and Howrah terminuses.

"Though actual bookings are not as high as trains, queries for reaching Digha on the morning of Rath Yatra and leaving in the evening are coming. We are telling them that we will firm up the plans once the traffic measures are announced as chief minister Mamata Banerjee will be present in Digha on that day," said a private operator that runs four daily services to Digha, including a night service.
The state transport department is planning to deploy additional buses. "We are looking at running extra buses from Kolkata to Digha on June 26 and 27 based on the demand," said a WBTC official. "We've never seen such advance bookings for Digha," said Santosh Dutta, who operates bus services. "Usually, people book 2-3 days in advance. But this time, we're getting calls weeks ahead."

Gujarat: Vadnagar to get Rs 17-crore multi-modal hub, CM Patel inspects progress
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel visited the heritage city of Vadnagar to review the progress of key state and Central government development projects aimed at transforming the town into a major tourism hub. A highlight of the visit was the inspection of the Rs 17-crore Multi-Modal Transportation Hub and public plaza under construction opposite Vadnagar Railway Station. The facility, designed to connect the station with the town's major heritage attractions, will offer parking, an amphitheatre, a food plaza, rest areas, cafes, and landscaped pathways. Plans also include planting over 2,000 trees in the surrounding area. The Chief Minister directed officials to ensure high-quality work and better coordination between the Railways and the state Tourism Department to complete the project on schedule. Under the Centre's Swadesh Darshan scheme, Vadnagar's key sites — including Sharmishtha Lake, Tana-Riri Park, Latery Stepwell, Ambaji Kotha Lake, the fort wall, and surrounding ponds — are also undergoing upgrades to enhance the tourist experience. CM Patel noted that these developments align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for Vadnagar, his birthplace, as a world-class heritage destination. During the site visit, Tourism Secretary Dr. Rajendra Kumar briefed the Chief Minister on the project's progress. The review was attended by MLA K.K. Patel, Tourism Commissioner Prabav Joshi, Pilgrimage Development Board Secretary Ramesh Merja, Mehsana District Collector S.K. Prajapati, DDO Dr. Hasrat Jasmine, and other senior officials from the Tourism Department. Vadnagar holds immense historic and political significance as one of India's oldest continuously inhabited settlements, dating back over 2,500 years. It was an important center of trade and culture in ancient times, featuring prominently in Buddhist and Jain histories. Politically, Vadnagar gained renewed prominence as the birthplace of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, linking its rich heritage with contemporary national leadership. The town's archaeological sites, ancient stepwells, and fortifications reflect its storied past, making Vadnagar a symbol of India's enduring civilization and evolving democracy.

With air-conditioned trains, MRTS to be on a par with Metro Rail
After taking over the MRTS network, the Chennai Metro Rail plans to operate air-conditioned trains between Chennai Beach and Velachery. The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has begun preliminary work, and will soon float bids for purchasing air-conditioned train sets for the MRTS network, and for upgrading the stations, sources said. Even if CMRL floats the tenders in a couple of months, it will take at least 18-24 months for the trains to be manufactured and delivered to the city, they added. The trains will likely be operated every seven minutes, and the signalling system will be switched to communications-based train control (the same system to be deployed in CMRL's phase II network), a source said. 'Significant overhaul' 'The State government feels that introducing air-conditioned coaches, improving the frequency, and revamping the stations will be a significant overhaul of the MRTS network, and enhance passenger comfort. The entire ecosystem will change, and monetising the spaces subsequently could fetch revenue. This will take a couple of years,' the source said. When asked if the fare structures would be revised, the sources said a decision would be taken later. Railways will continue to operate the network for two years. The fare structures will be finalised around the time the CMRL takes full control of the operations, the source said. Besides, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to be signed between the Government of Tamil Nadu and Railways is getting ready. The first draft has been completed, and the initial round of discussion with the Railways is under way. If the consensus is reached soon, then, the MoU will be signed before the end of September, officials said. Many commuters are glad about the CMRL's takeover of MRTS, but want the fares to be reasonable. 'Lifts dysfunctional' S. Jayalakshmi, a resident of Adyar who frequently takes the MRTS trains, said, 'Most of us have had faced problems at the MRTS stations, which wear a dingy look. On many occasions, I have seen the lifts and escalators dysfunctional in some stations; the stations also stink sometimes, causing a lot of discomfort.' 'People are set to gain from upgrades such as air-conditioned trains and improved frequency. But the fares should be revised, keeping in mind the poor. Thousands of lower middle-class and the poor use the MRTS system. They can continue to travel if the fares are reasonable,' she added.
