Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], July 13 (ANI): Following the directives of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the distribution of cartons has commenced to provide a distinctive identity to the apples cultivated in Uttarakhand.
This initiative aims to benefit apple producers in the Uttarkashi and Dehradun districts while enhancing the packaging standards of the apples, as stated in the official release.
The Chief Minister stated that Uttarakhand offers immense possibilities for organic farming and horticulture. A policy has been formulated for the proper development of horticulture in the state, and the government is continuously promoting this sector. The state government is particularly encouraging apple cultivation in horticulture.
He said that the government is continuously working towards apple production in the state and to ensure a fair price for apples to the apple-producing farmers. Work has been done to give a unique identity to the apples produced in Uttarakhand by selling the apple product of the farmers in the Uttarakhand brand Universal Carton / Corrugated Fibre Board Box (CFB) with Apple Tray.
According to the release, to provide higher prices to farmers for their produce, the work of distributing produce among farmers through Horticulture Mobile Squad Centres has been initiated. This involves providing 3.85 lakh Universal Cartons to farmers in Uttarkashi district and 0.75 lakh Universal Cartons to farmers in Dehradun district, both of which are in demand. These cartons are being supplied to the listed firms/companies.
The farmers and apple producers of the state will now receive higher prices for their produce by obtaining Universal Cartons on a 50% subsidy under the Uttar Fasal Prabandhan Yojana, a state sector initiative run by the Horticulture and Food Processing Department.
Along with this, they will be able to provide their important support in giving a unique identity to the apple produce of Uttarakhand. (ANI)

‘Will hurt their international trade': Piyush Goyal warns of blowback over carbon tax; says EU may hurt itself more

Union commerce and industry minister on Saturday said the 's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is likely to harm European industries more than its intended targets, including India. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'There is a lot of opposition to CBAM in the EU also. EU's infrastructure will become costlier. EU's housing will become costlier. EU's cost of manufacturing will become costlier, which will hurt their ,' Goyal said at a press conference. As per news agency ANI, he added that this could actually create more export opportunities for India due to its competitive manufacturing base. Goyal also noted the growing discontent against CBAM among European business leaders. 'When I go to different countries in Europe and I criticise CBAM, all the industry players, CEOs of very large companies, come up to me and thank me. They say you speak like you are our minister,' he said. Emphasising Prime Minister Narendra Modi's principle of converting challenges into opportunities, Goyal assured that India is fully capable of responding if export interests are harmed. 'We are a sovereign and very powerful nation today, so if anybody hurts our export interest, we will react and retaliate or rebalance,' he said. Goyal also confirmed that the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), signed on Thursday during 's visit to London, has made strong progress across sensitive areas like gender, environment and intellectual property. 'We have protected all the sensitive sectors of India vis-à-vis the UK... Dairy, rice and sugar, we have not opened for the United Kingdom,' he said. He added that the FTA ensures 99% preferential or zero-duty access for Indian exports to the UK, making it a 'phenomenal' deal that offers both stability and new investment opportunities. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'It will not only support export of goods and services, but will also bring a stable, predictable and secure framework in which India can become a trusted partner for the UK's supply chains,' he said. The agreement is part of India's broader goal to double bilateral trade with the UK to $120 billion by 2030. As per news agency PTI, India has also secured an understanding through diplomatic communication (note verbale) to safeguard its interests in case the UK implements a carbon tax in the future. If such a tax affects India's trade benefits under the FTA, the country will retain the right to take countermeasures, including withdrawing concessions.

India-UK trade deal: CETA opens duty-free access for Indian seafood; exporters eye 70% growth boost

Representative image The India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) is likely to provide a major boost to India's seafood and export sectors. The landmark pact was signed on Thursday, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and was formalised by commerce minister Piyush Goyal and UK secretary of state for business and trade Jonathan Reynolds. As per news agency ANI, the agreement is expected to significantly benefit India's marine exports by scrapping UK import tariffs that previously ranged from 0 to 21.5 per cent. These included duties on shrimp, squid, frozen pomfret, lobsters, and other seafood items under HS Codes 03, 05, 15, 23, 95, and 1603 to 1605. With CETA now in effect, all marine products in tariff category 'A' receive full duty exemption. However, certain prepared seafood items under HS 1601 remain excluded from benefits. India exported $104 million worth of seafood to the UK in 2024–25, with frozen shrimp accounting for $80 million alone. Despite this, India's share in Britain's $5.4 billion seafood market stands at just 2.25 per cent. Industry estimates now predict a 70 per cent increase in exports to the UK, supported by improved cost competitiveness, according to ANI. The fisheries sector supports nearly 28 million livelihoods in India and accounts for 8 per cent of global fish production. Over the past decade, seafood export volume jumped 60 per cent and value grew 88 per cent. According to ANI, the number of destinations expanded from 100 to 130 countries, and value-added product exports tripled to Rs 7,666 crore, reflecting a shift towards premium markets. CETA helps India level the field with countries like Vietnam and Singapore, which already enjoy UK duty benefits through their respective FTAs. This removes a key disadvantage previously faced by Indian exporters, especially for high-value products. States like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh are well-positioned to lead this export surge, especially if they continue to align with the UK's sanitary and phytosanitary standards. Experts say the deal's scope goes beyond seafood. The landmark agreement provides zero-duty access to 99 per cent of tariff lines, with a key focus on labour-intensive areas other than seafood like textiles, leather, and gems and jewellery. It is expected to drive up exports in consumer goods, apparel, cosmetics, auto parts, and jewellery. As per news agency PTI, EY India's Agneshwar Sen believes that Indian MSMEs and job creation in labour-heavy sectors would benefit, while UK firms gain deeper access to India's growing market. The agreement also marks progress in services trade. ICRA chief economist Aditi Nayar was quoted by PTI as saying that India stands to gain from UK concessions in IT, financial services, education, and professional mobility. An added social security pact allows Indian professionals to be exempt from UK contributions for three years, making overseas employment more financially viable. 'Game-changing': Piyush Goyal lauds India-UK FTA; calls it 'stepping stone towards dream of Viksit Bharat'

NEW DELHI: Union commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal on Saturday hailed the newly signed free trade agreement with the United Kingdom and said that the deal was signed on India's terms. While addressing a press conference, Goyal claimed the FTA to be "important" and "game-changing," stating that 99 per cent of India's exports will be able to go to the UK duty-free. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer signed a Free Trade Agreement. Cabinet approval has been given in India, but Parliamentary approval in the UK is pending," Goyal said. "It will be a game-changing FTA that will give immense opportunities and benefits to India's farmers, businessmen, MSME sector, youngsters, and fishermen. Out of all FTAs signed so far, the India-UK FTA has been the biggest, most comprehensive, and most important. This FTA has been signed on our terms. Ninety-nine per cent of our exports will be able to go to the UK duty-free,' he added. — ANI (@ANI) This comes after India and the UK signed a historic trade deal in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK PM Starmer. Taking a swipe at the previous UPA government, Goyal criticised its trade strategy while highlighting the Modi government's approach to FTAs. He also said that the comprehensive deal will help advance progress towards a Viksit Bharat. Goyal said, "UPA government signed FTAs with our competitors, with those countries who would sell their products in India for cheaper prices to destroy India's manufacturing sector... The FTAs signed during the UPA rule were not in the best interests of the country. FTAs signed by PM Narendra Modi are with Mauritius, Australia, EFTA countries, UAE, and now the UK." "Talks are going on with other developed countries. India now signs FTAs with countries which do not compete with us, but complement us. The UK-India Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement will prove to be a stepping stone towards our dream of a Viksit Bharat," he added.
