Loco-pilots: The real ‘driving force' of Ajni Pune Vande Bharat Express
2
Nagpur: The Ajni–Pune Vande Bharat Express, India's longest and fastest Vande Bharat service, began its maiden journey covering 881km and connecting 10 key cities on Sunday. While the train's speed and convenience have grabbed headlines, it is the dedicated loco pilots behind the controls who truly drive this historic service with pride and passion.
At the heart of this journey is a skilled team comprising loco pilot and assistant traction loco controller Matin Khan, chief loco inspector RS Nemane, and assistant traction loco controller Sachin Thakre. Their 12-hour shift requires sharp focus and teamwork as they guide the train through diverse terrains and stops at Wardha, Akola, Shegaon, Bhusaval, Jalgaon, Manmad, Puntamba, Daund, and Pune.
"No one usually notices our hard work.
We go by unnoticed and underrated," said Nemane with a chuckle. Speaking to TOI, Khan described piloting the Vande Bharat as "a proud career moment," saying, "It's not just driving a train; it's representing the future of rail travel."
Youngest of the trio, Thakre's excitement was palpable. "Handling this train makes me feel I'm part of something big, something changing the way people travel in Maharashtra," he said, adding that the train's advanced technology pushes him to give his best throughout the demanding journey.

But speed alone doesn't define their work. "Every signal and station demands full attention. We carry hundreds of passengers, and their safety is our top priority," Khan explained.
Senior pilots familiar with this route called it both challenging and rewarding. "The varied terrain and multiple stops require precision and teamwork," said one. "Delivering passengers safely and on time fills us with unmatched satisfaction and pride."
As the Vande Bharat raced toward Pune, the pilots reflected on their vital role. "We are not just operators; we are custodians of India's railway progress. Every smooth run reminds us why we do this," Khan said.
Behind the speed, comfort, and technology of the Ajni–Pune Vande Bharat Express lies the dedication and passion of the loco pilots, the true drivers of India's railway revolution.

High court directs govt to revive KMTA by Nov 1
Kochi: In an order that could improve the transport infrastructure of the city, Kerala High Court issued a directive asking state govt to revive Kochi Metropolitan Transport Authority (KMTA) by Nov 1. KMTA came into force in 2020 but is yet to be fully operational and there is a strong demand from various quarters to revive it. Considering a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Richard Rajesh Kumar and Arjun P Bhaskar, the court said that KMTA should be fully operational by Kerala Piravi Day and govt can provide adequate staff and funds for the proper functioning of the authority. KMTA, the first of its kind in India to integrate, plan and regulate different commuting modes in Kochi, was inaugurated on Nov 1, 2020. The authority is chaired by transport minister and has transport secretary as its vice-chairman. However, there was no major initiative from KMTA to strengthen the public transport system in the city, except for some initiatives like forming a society of autorickshaw unions and seven companies of bus operators in the city. KMTA convened its first meeting on Jan 22, 2021, and took various decisions for the smooth and timely implementation of integrated transport projects in the city. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Legendary Stars: Timeless Icons Reportingly Undo But there was no further action by the authorities. As per section 12 of KMTA Act, 2019, the authority is conferred with a wide range of duties and functions to maintain the effective development of urban transport. The act envisages a comprehensive mobility plan and includes developments such as technology-based solutions for traffic management, detection of traffic offences, parking infrastructure and other such developments. Govt had mooted a plan to increase the urban mobility area under KMTA three years ago and a proposal regarding this was presented at its board meeting. As per this, nine municipalities and 29 panchayats should be brought under KMTA's purview to ensure its proper functioning. Hubballi Airport leads in solar power generation among AAI airports
1 2 3 Hubballi: The Hubballi Airport, where an 8MW solar power plant was installed in Dec 2022, has emerged as the highest power-generating among Airport Authority of India (AAI) airports in the country. It produces 8MW of electricity per day, meeting its own needs before supplying excess power to other state airports. It's also said that Hubballi Airport is the first AAI-run facility in the country to export solar-generated power to multiple establishments. Rupesh Kumar Sripad, director of Hubballi Airport, told TOI that Hubballi is India's first airport-based solar plant supplying renewable energy to multiple airports. "The plant generated 2.4 crore units of power in the last two years. We saved Rs 12.4 crore that was supposed to be paid as the electricity bill for all AAI establishments in Karnataka. AAI establishments like Ballari Radar Station, Bengaluru Gagan Air-navigation monitoring station, Bengaluru-Devanahalli Airport-AAI staff residential colony, and Mangalore Airport AAI staff residential colony benefit from the Hubballi solar plant, whose project cost was Rs 33.2 crore," he explained. He further said, "Revenue generated from balanced energy after feeding to AAI establishments in Karnataka is Rs 2.1 crore." Sources added that the airport is selling electricity to KPTCL, earning over Rs one crore annually, while saving around Rs 3.6 crore in power bills every year. Earlier, Belagavi and Hubballi airports were shortlisted for the setting up of a solar plant, and Hubballi was preferred based on its weather history. The plant is installed by Madhav Infra Project Limited of Gujarat under the Sustainable Green Airport Mission, in an area of 38 acres, offsetting an estimated 2.1 lakh tonnes of carbon emissions during its lifespan. Thanks to such a green effort, the airport was honoured with the Platinum In The Green Airport Recognition-2025 award, meant for global green airports, in April, by Airports Council International Asia-Pacific and Middle East.
