Napoleon's Sword Sold at Auction for 4.7 Mn Euros

Asharq Al-Awsat24-05-2025
A sword that belonged to Napoleon and was specially ordered for the personal use of the French emperor fetched almost 4.7 million euros at auction in Paris, many times the asking price and coming close to a new record price for a Napoleonic artefact, the auction house said.
The piece, which Napoleon ordered in 1802 and kept throughout his reign, was sold for 4.66 million euros ($5.27 million) late Thursday, said the Drouot auctioneers, on whose premises the auction organized by the Giquello auction firm took place, AFP said.
The sword had been estimated to reach 700,000 to one million euros when it came under the hammer in Paris.
The final price nearly broke the auction record for a Napoleonic artefact, set in 2007 when a sword used by Napoleon at the 1800 Battle of Marengo sold for 4.8 million euros.
"It joins the very select group of the most valuable Napoleonic artifacts ever sold at auction," the Drouot auction house said.
Napoleon passed the sabre on to his close ally Emmanuel de Grouchy, who the French emperor named his last marshal of the empire.
The sword has been in Grouchy's family since 1815, the year of Napoleon's last defeat at the Battle of Waterloo.
A second copy, identical to this one and also commissioned by Napoleon, is kept at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
Napoleon memorabilia regularly comes up for sale at auction in France in a flourishing trade marked by intense interest from collectors.
Two pistols that he once intended to use to kill himself were sold in France last July for 1.7 million euros, while one of his trademark "bicorne" hats was acquired for 1.9 million euros in November 2023.
A hand-written letter from Napoleon denying his role in the kidnapping of Pope Pius VII in 1809 was sold in April for 26,360 euros.

A Slovenian super white fetches $40,000 at Saudi falcon auction

RIYADH: A gyr hybrid falcon chick fetched SR151,000 ($40,000) at auction on Tuesday, becoming the most expensive sale so far at a gathering of international bird of prey breeders in Malham, north of the Saudi capital. The bidding for the Mathlouth gyr super white, from the Slovenian breeder GP, started at SR50,000. The Farkh, a bird less than a year old, is 17in in length and 16in in height and weighs around 1,050 grams. The identity of the buyer has not been revealed and it is usual practice for the bird to named after it has been sold But the hybrid was not the only bird sold on Tuesday, the fourth night of the International Falcon Breeders Auction, an annual gathering that brings together the biggest traders in the industry. Bidders also competed for a gyr shaheen falcon, from British breeder YLS, with the 1,170 gram dark brown chick eventually selling for SR51,000. The gyr, short for gyrfalcon, is the largest falcon species in the world and ranges in color from pure white to brown. The birds are known for their large, broad-winged and long-tailed bodies and are highly sought after by breeders and enthusiasts. The event organized by the Saudi Falcons Club and held at its headquarters, is open daily from 4-11 p.m. through Aug. 25. A Mathlouth gyr, a gyr shaheen and a gyr pure will be under the hammer on Wednesday night. Last year, a peregrine falcon chick named Ultra White sold for SR400,000 in a record for the event. Its American breeder Pacific Northwest Falcons also sold another peregrine chick named Super White for SR86,000. That auction concluded with SR10 million in sales after 866 falcons were bought. A domestic auction by the club last year raised nearly SR6 million. With a history of exceeding SR18 million in sales over the past three years, the auction introduces new international breeding farms and fosters collaboration among producers and investors. Walid Al-Taweel, spokesperson for the Saudi Falcons Club, told Arab News that high-value sales had motivated falconers and enhanced their confidence in the event as a trusted global destination. 'The auction utilizes modern technologies in sales and medical examinations. It also features live broadcasting, which allows real-time viewing of the auction from around the world,' he said. The annual auction provides a platform for falconers to learn about the latest breeding and hybridization techniques and share knowledge with fellow experts from around the world. It plays a significant role in preserving and promoting Saudi Arabia's cultural, economic, and historical heritage in line with Vision 2030. Speaking to Arab News on Monday, New Zealand Ambassador Charles Kingston described the visit as 'fun and fascinating.' 'Beautiful falcons on display and a wonderful showcase of the Kingdom's rich heritage and culture,' he said. The Kingdom has a rich historical heritage and tradition of falconry. A common companion of a Bedouin traveler across the Arabian deserts, hunting with falcons was an integral part of the land for thousands of years as they helped provide nourishment for the weary traveler by catching prey.

BMW Transforms the Car Roof Into a Cinema-Sized Screen

When it comes to car innovation, BMW has always been a name that turns heads. For decades, the German brand has been tied to luxury, performance, and daring technology. But this time, BMW isn't talking about horsepower or sleek exterior lines — instead, it's reimagining what happens inside the car. Picture this: your panoramic glass roof turning into a massive cinema screen above your head. From Idea to Reality New patent filings reveal that BMW is working on a smart curved panoramic roof that can switch from a clear skylight into a giant display. It's not just a fancy piece of glass — it's a surface designed to stream entertainment across the entire ceiling, wrapping passengers in visuals like never before. Imagine sitting in a plush BMW seat, leaning back, and catching your favorite movie or even a live football match projected across the roof. This isn't your typical back-seat entertainment system. It's immersive, blending natural light with digital magic to create an experience that feels more like a private cinema — only this one moves with you. More Than Just Luxury Sure, it sounds luxurious, but BMW's thinking goes deeper. Cars are no longer just transport; they're becoming mobile living spaces where comfort, tech, and entertainment come together. By turning the roof into a display, BMW is showing how driving can evolve into a lifestyle experience, not just a way to get from point A to point B. Of course, BMW isn't alone in this race. Rivals like Mercedes-Benz and Audi will be watching closely. In today's luxury car market, the battle isn't just about speed or horsepower — it's about who can deliver the smartest, most exciting technology. If BMW brings this roof-screen concept to life, it could set a new bar that forces competitors to catch up. The Challenges Ahead Turning a glass roof into a display won't be easy. There are hurdles like glare from sunlight, energy demands, and making sure the glass stays durable in all conditions. But if there's any brand with the engineering chops to pull it off, it's BMW. After all, they've built their legacy on pushing boundaries.
