Suit alleges fraud on Oklahoma's $2.5B Disney-sized theme park

The sole investor in the $2.5 billion American Heartland theme park and resort that failed to launch in Vinita, Oklahoma, has alleged fraud and psychological abuse from the developers, according to a lawsuit filed July 25 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Oklahoma. In the suit, 91-year-old Gene Bicknell, who once owned a large chain of Pizza Hut franchises, alleges that promoters Richard M. Silanskas Jr., Larry K. Wilhite and Stephen D. Hedrick of Mansion Entertainment Group stole $60 million and caused him severe distress that led to a stroke last year. The suit, which asks for the investment back along with other fees, includes texts and emails from Silanskas and Wilhite impersonating messages from God. 'Silanskas and Wilhite executed a predatory conspiracy of psychological manipulation — convincing Gene, through fraud and impersonation, that God himself was commanding him both to finance the park's construction and to grant Silanskas and Wilhite two-thirds ownership over the completed venture,' the lawsuit reads. Developer Mansion Entertainment Group announced in July 2023 designs for the 1,000-acre Americana-themed development, including roller coasters, an indoor water park, a 300-room hotel and an RV park. The footprint of the 125-acre theme portion would rival Disney's Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida, or Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California, in size. At the time, Hedrick commented publicly that Bicknell was the sole financial backer, per the suit. 'The plan was to use Gene's money to build the American Heartland Project and then steal it, paying themselves handsomely along the way,' the suit reads. 'Silanskas already had a record of involvement in failed theme park projects that left empty-handed investors in their wake.' The RV area was originally scheduled to open in spring 2025, followed by the theme park and resort in fall 2026. Indeed, the RV area broke ground in 2023 but nothing more has been built besides a fence and a gravel road, according to the suit. Developers claimed that their design team includes former Disney Parks builders and Walt Disney Imagineers, but that was also a lie, the suit alleges. 'The groundbreaking was essentially the beginning and the end of the construction work on the entire Project,' the lawsuit reads. 'Innocent people lost money by buying up land near Vinita with property values inflated by news of a theme park that would never exist.' This is not the first time the project has been sued. Canadian design firm Forrec and Columbus, Kansas-based Crossland Construction both filed claims in May 2024 alleging that they were not paid for their work. At least five lawsuits or arbitrations have been filed by vendors, according to Bicknell's suit. Mansion Entertainment Group did not respond to Construction Dive's request for comment on the lawsuit. 3 Big Numbers: How is c-store M&A really going?

This story was originally published on C-Store Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily C-Store Dive newsletter. 3 Big Numbers is a weekly column that looks at a few key details from around the c-store industry. Earlier this week, we looked back at the most impactful c-store M&A deals so far this year. Today, we're looking at the M&A landscape more broadly as businesses buckle up for the second half. Tariffs have been looming, but experts are almost evenly split on whether they will have an impact on acquisition activity, according to a report from Goldman Sachs. So where do we stand? In this week's '3 Big Numbers,' we look at how M&A is shaking out in 2025. 20% The increase in retail M&A activity year-over-year through May. Despite the uncertainty, strategic retail M&A, which includes corporate deals and add-ons, was up 20% through the first five months of the year, according to Bain & Company's midyear M&A report. And Bain thinks we'll see more deals this year. 'We expect consolidation deals will continue to define the M&A market throughout 2025,' Bain said in the report. Bain noted that some of the companies that came through the 2008 financial crisis the strongest were those that used the downturn to strengthen and expand their businesses. That means today's uncertainty could be an opportunity for well-capitalized companies. 35.7% The decline in c-store M&A year-over-year through mid-May. While retail dealmaking has grown, c-stores have been notably more cautious. In fact, convenience store and fuel distribution M&A activity decreased 35.7% year-over-year through mid-May, reaching just nine announced deals, according to a report from investment banking firm Capstone Partners. Activity has picked up a little during the summer, however. Since the start of June, notable deals have included Gill Energy buying Dutchess Terminals and its 13 retail locations, Applegreen getting the rights to remodel and run 18 travel centers in Massachusetts, Sampson-Bladen Oil Co. agreeing to acquire the 15-location Breeze Thru Markets chain and MAPCO buying 35 stores from Couche-Tard. So there's still hope that 2025 could outperform 2024. $9.1 billion The price tag on Sunoco's deal for Parkland Corp. In June, Parkland Corp's shareholders voted to accept energy company Sunoco's $9.1 billion buyout offer. Now that Alimentation Couche-Tard has withdrawn its bid for 7-Eleven parent company Seven & i, it's quite possible this will be the biggest deal of the year. It's still unclear what Sunoco is going to do with the thousands of stores it's getting in the acquisition, but the industry will surely be watching to see whether it keeps them or sparks a new round of M&A by offloading them. Who knows? If the upward trajectory in M&A continues, maybe by the end of the year it'll get unseated at the top of the 'biggest M&A' heap Recommended Reading Tracking 2025 c-store acquisitions Error in retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data

Lantronix Launches New NTC-500 Series 5G Industrial Router

Lantronix Inc. (NASDAQ:LTRX) is one of the tech stocks to buy according to analysts. On July 17, Lantronix introduced its new NTC-500 Series, which is a rugged industrial-grade 5G wireless router. The series transforms enterprise mobility and connectivity through an affordable solution that reduces the need for costly Ethernet infrastructure, saving thousands of dollars per drop, while providing high-speed and low-latency performance comparable to wired networks. The launch of the NTC-500 Series is a direct result of Lantronix's acquisition of NetComm Wireless, which was finalized on December 26 last year, for $6.5 million in cash. The NTC-500 Series is designed to address key pain points in industrial connectivity, such as high deployment costs, lengthy installation timelines, limited mobility, and the need to support a high density of connected endpoints. A robotic arm holding a semiconductor chip, emphasizing the precision and quality of the company's production equipment. Its flexible and future-ready design is expected to open new revenue streams across private 5G, edge computing, and industrial automation markets, supporting various use cases and reducing total cost of ownership. The router is globally approved and carrier-certified, supporting private-5G readiness with bands like n48-CBRS, n77, and n78, which enables the rapid digitization of previously stranded or mobile assets. Lantronix Inc. (NASDAQ:LTRX) develops, markets, and sells industrial and enterprise IoT products and services internationally.
