Watch: Escaped rodeo steers run loose on Texas highway
March 25 (UPI) -- A Texas highway turned into an impromptu rodeo when six steers escaped from a trailer and took off running.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office said a latch came undone on the door to the trailer, allowing six steers to run loose on the Interstate 45 North Freeway, near the Montgomery County line, just before noon on Monday.
The sheriff's office said the steers were on their way home to Barnum, Texas, after participating in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
"These particular cows are made for roping. They're meant to come out of a chute and take off running," Lt. Chris Adolph, head of the Harris County Sheriff's Office's livestock unit, told KPRC-TV.
The truck had been carrying 31 roping steers, but the driver was able to maintain control of all but six of the bovines.
Multiple lanes of traffic were closed while deputies attempted to wrangle the escaped animals.
Sheriff Ed Gonzales said on social media that all of the steers were "accounted for and secured" just before 4:30 p.m. local time.
Investigators said they were looking into whether the trailer had been properly secured before the latch came undone.

N.Y. Family's Home Was on Fire — But What Police Found in the Basement Was Even Worse

Luis Francisco Soriano, also known as Jefry Yevo, had just ended his shift at a Punta Cana hotel's call center when he was taken into custody by members of the U.S. Marshals Service on Wednesday, June 4, according to a press release from the U.S. Marshals Service. Soriano, 31, had been wanted by police in Irondequoit, N.Y., a suburb of Rochester, on four counts of second-degree murder, as well as narcotics charges related to the August 2024 killings, in which two of the victims were ages 2 and 4, per the release. Officials said Soriano fled to Puerto Rico after the slayings and then traveled by boat to the Dominican Republic. He was added to the USMS District of Puerto Rico's Top 10 Most Wanted fugitives list in September 2024, per the release. According to local station WHEC-TV, when first responders arrived at the home on Aug. 31, 2024, they found the house up in flames, police said. After searching the home, authorities found the bodies of a father, mother, and their two young children. Multiple fires were also set around the home, authorities said, per the outlet. The victims were identified as Fraime Ubaldo, 30; Marangely Moreno Santiago, 26; Evangeline Ubaldo Moreno, 4; and Sebastián Ubaldo Moreno, 2, the Associated Press reported, citing officials. Soriano's brother, Julio Soriano, was arrested shortly after the killings, which police claim the suspects tried to cover up by setting multiple fires, according to local newspaper the Democrat & Chronicle. Julio, originally from the Dominican Republic, is facing four counts of first-degree murder, four counts of second-degree murder, as well as other felony charges, the outlet reported. Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) spokesperson David Cuellar said the incident occurred at Campbell Hall, located in Studio City, just after 3 p.m. local time on Wednesday, June 4, according to the Associated Press. The driver of a green Rivian SUV is said to have struck a 15-year-old boy who was walking between cars at the rear of the campus as school ended, CW affiliate KTLA and ABC affiliate KABC-TV reported. The teen became pinned between two SUVs as a result of the collision, according to the reports. The 'gravely injured' victim and his uninjured father were then transported to a local hospital, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The teen later died from his injuries. Footage from the scene, shared by KABC and NBC affiliate KNBC, showed authorities working near multiple SUVs that were very close in proximity to each other.
