‘A hard fought win': Austin-Travis County EMS vacancies at lowest rate in years
AUSTIN (KXAN) — More medics will respond to calls across the city and county as Austin-Travis County EMS continues to grow its staff. The department graduated its largest cadet class in history in March.
'We graduated 38 sworn field providers. So those new cadets hit the streets. They are now sworn medics,' ATCEMS Chief of Staff Wesley Hopkins said.

The new graduates helped fill open positions and bring down the department's vacancy rate. Hopkins said that number was high just a few years ago.
'2021 and 2022 our vacancy rate was 24%. I ran the numbers this morning, we're down to 14%. It's been a hard fought win.'

Hopkins said a realistic goal is to get the vacancy rate in the single digits. He believes that's achievable as they continue with their cadet classes. Thanks to additional funding, he said they're able to increase the number of academies to three per year.
'This next generation of EMTs and paramedics are phenomenal,' Hopkins said. 'To watch the tenacity they show, their willingness to help people, their energy has really been a morale booster for, I think, the entire organization.'
Hopkins said the department currently has 88 vacancies, which is the best it has been in years.
In 2022, KXAN reported about the department having 163 department vacancies. At that time, ATCEMS said some of the factors contributing to this figure included increases in its vacancy rates, limited recruitment staff availability, burnout impacting staffing volumes and EMT application requirements in place.

In an effort to fill vacancies, ATCEMS outlined the following recruitment strategies:
Increasing recruitment staff to include dedicated, sworn and full-time staff to assist recruitment efforts from other EMT and paramedic schools and agencies
Increasing visibility nationally through EMS conferences, education institutions and marketing materials
Eliminating the requirement of 12-month EMS experience for applicants
Hopkins attributed their current improvements to recruitment efforts both locally and nationally.

'We are now starting to see a lot of the schools here locally kind of pick back up their EMT and paramedic programs,' Hopkins said. 'We got some funding for a national recruiting drive, and so that's precisely what our recruiting division and our human resource division have done is they've recruited nationally at different conferences.'

‘Explosion' reported during fire at Hamer Pellet plant in Elkins
ELKINS, (WBOY) — Fire departments from several counties responded after a fire broke out in the Elkins Industrial Park on Wednesday. The fire was reported just before 4 p.m. at Hamer Pellet Fuel Co. plant. First responders said that there was heavy smoke when they arrived, and additional agencies were called to assist, according to a press release from the City of Elkins. No injuries or entrapments were reported from the fire, but the city said that an EMS unit did report an explosion during firefighting operations. The fire was extinguished before 8 p.m., the release said. Jackie Goodman, former Austin City Council Member and environmental advocate, has died
AUSTIN (KXAN) — Former Austin City Council Member and Mayor Pro Tem Jackie Goodman died, according to a social media post by current Mayor Pro Tem Vanessa on Wednesday. Goodman served as a city council member between 1993 and 2005 and a term as Mayor Pro Tem. Prior to joining the city council, she worked as an early childhood educator. Beginning in the 1970s, she contributed to environmental causes as part of the 'Zilker Park Posse,' according to the Austin History Center. She was also a member of the Save Barton Creek Association for more than 30 years, a steering committee member of Save Our Springs, and worked with other local environmental groups. During her time on the city council, Goodman successfully led a petition effort to remove term limits on council members. The Austin Commission for Women inducted Goodman into its Hall of Fame in 2016. Fuentes said she was 'saddened' by Goodman's passing. 'Jackie served our city with distinction for 12 years on Council (1993-2005) and as Mayor Pro Tem. She was a passionate advocate for environmental protection, underserved communities, and thoughtful growth,' Fuentes said. 'Our thoughts are with her family. Jackie's legacy of public service will continue to inspire Austin.' Former Austin Mayors Lee Leffingwell (2009-2015) and Will Wynn (2003-2009) also sent statements. 'Jackie was an incredibly savvy political and policy operative,' Leffingwell wrote. 'She would navigate the Council dais, and the community, as she championed the important issues around our regional growth. Her dedication to our community set a high standard. I would count on her to have the deepest understanding of the most complicated issues, and the solutions to go with them.' 'I learned so much from Jackie over the five years we served together. She was such an important voice for so many Austinites. I will miss her,' Wynn wrote. Former Travis County Tax Assessor-Collector Bruce Elfant wrote on social media that he and Goodman had been friends for over 40 years. 'She was passionate and pushy in her quiet way when it came to how the City of Austin should address growth and our environment,' Elfant said. 'I last spoke with Jackie just a few weeks ago when she was attempting to resolve an issue for a neighborhood association. Jackie's work on and off the council dais helped make Austin a better place. People injured after ‘juveniles' threw frozen water bottles at moving vehicles, per Leander Police
LEANDER, Texas (KXAN) – The Leander Police Department said it needed help identifying 'juveniles' who threw frozen water bottles at moving vehicles, leading to injuries. On the nights of May 29 and May 30, Leander Police said several 'juveniles' reportedly threw frozen water bottles from a white 2014 Dodge Durango near San Gabriel Parkway and CR 270 and from the truck beds of a two pickup trucks, one white and the other a dark color, along North Bagdad Road. 'This incident caused damage to numerous windshields, headlights, and mirrors,' LPD said in a Facebook post. 'Two victims suffered injuries to their faces because of the incident,' the post continued. The police department said it heard of similar reports in Georgetown and 'other parts of Williamson County.'
