Elly De La Cruz Honors Late Sister With Home Run After Learning Of Her Death Before Game

Yahoo2 days ago

Despite receiving the devastating news that his older sister had died ahead of his recent game against the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds baseball player Elly De La Cruz still played his heart out.
On June 1, the Reds' 7-3 loss against the Cubs brought their season record to 29-31 following the game. The team's manager, Terry Francona, shared that the shortstop was determined to attend and participate in the recent match, as reported by ESPN.
Elly De La Cruz delivers a performance marked by strength
During the game, he hit a home run that brought in two runs and tallied two runs of his own. Before he landed his 50th home run, when he was a few steps before touching the plate, he tapped his chest, gave a nod to the sky, and clapped.
'He takes so much pride in being available,' Francona said about De La Cruz, per ESPN. 'Guys like that, Carlos Santana in Cleveland was very similar, and for a kid that's that young, that's an admirable trait.'

Following the game, De La Cruz opted out of attending the press conference, a stance he had maintained ahead of the game as well.
Elly De La Cruz honors sister's life on the field
When De La Cruz first entered the field, something noticeable was how he honored his sister's life on his apparel. He sported a hat that featured Spanish writing accompanied by 'RIP Genelis,' according to MLB.com. On the back of his Nike spikes, he wrote 'RIP Manita,' which translates to 'RIP 'sister'' in Spanish.
According to El Pregonero, De La Cruz's loved ones shared that the shortstop's sibling, Genelis de la Cruz Sánchez, transitioned peacefully after she succumbed to a long-term illness on May 30. Her farewell will be held at the Sabana Grande de Boyá Municipal Funeral Home, where mourners will come together to show love and support during this heartbreaking time.

'We care so much about playing a game and winning,' Francona told ESPN, 'but in a hurry, you're reminded of what's really important. So I think everybody kind of kept their head on a swivel with him today, just trying to take care of him.'

Pete Crow-Armstrong is one of baseball's loudest talents: The quiet work behind the scenes

CHICAGO — Roughly five hours before first pitch at a Wrigley Field night game, Pete Crow-Armstrong will begin part of his pregame routine. Amid the quiet and stillness of an empty ballpark, the Chicago Cubs' budding superstar will hit balls off a tee and observe the flight patterns, taking mental notes on how things look and feel. Advertisement Crow-Armstrong does not work alone. John Mallee and Dustin Kelly — two hitting coaches who helped implement last year's midseason overhaul of Crow-Armstrong's left-handed stance — remain a constant presence in the daily schedule. Teammates such as Michael Busch and Justin Turner also often join these early sessions. Before 40,000 fans stroll through the gates, this intimate setting offers a chance to connect and focus. For a player with loud talents, a magnetic personality and a soaring public profile, Crow-Armstrong very much appreciates his craft and enjoys the grind. 'When you're working on a swing pattern or movement and the ball's stationary, you can think your way through the order,' Mallee said. 'The more that the ball starts moving, the more timing is involved. The more timing that's involved, the harder it is to work on certain swings, because then it becomes an athletic event.' Within the sport, Crow-Armstrong's athleticism is almost unmatched. In the Statcast era, his arm strength and sprint speed are in the 94th and 96th percentiles, which allows him to play center field at a Gold Glove level. Still only 23 years old, he also has energy to burn. After hitting off the tee, Crow-Armstrong will go through flip drills, then hit the type of breaking ball he's expected to see that night and finish with more swings against fastballs. Tracking spin and velocity against this outdoor backdrop creates a different perspective from hitting in a cage. Establishing a consistent routine had been a priority for Cubs manager Craig Counsell and his coaching staff during Crow-Armstrong's rookie year. That process required time and patience. 'I've had a bunch of reality checks,' Crow-Armstrong said. 'The hand-holding that kind of went on the last year or two, I've had a lot of people just push me in the right direction.' Advertisement Mallee, the lead hitting coach for the 2016 World Series team, was uniquely qualified for this job. He had worked closely with Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant and Javier Báez, the iconic player the Cubs traded for Crow-Armstrong at the 2021 deadline. Surprisingly dismissed after the Cubs lost the 2017 National League Championship Series, Mallee moved on from that disappointment by landing major-league coaching positions with the Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Angels. Mallee, who had grown up as the son of a Chicago police officer and graduated from Mount Carmel High on the South Side, also maintained solid relationships within the Cubs organization. When the club rehired Mallee as a hitting coach for Triple-A Iowa in 2023, the big idea was to run the hitting program at that minor-league affiliate the same way the Cubs oversee their hitters at the major-league level. That season, Mallee overlapped with Crow-Armstrong, who was part of the next wave of young talent the Cubs soon expected to reach Wrigley Field. 'We had an advance meeting every day,' Mallee said. 'We spent a lot of time on game planning, how to read the data charts, how to understand their strengths and weaknesses in the zone, what they hit and what they can't hit. You try to build an approach and a plan according to their strengths and teach them how to do that according to the pitcher's strengths and how that matches up. So that when they came up here, they were used to the big-league environment.' Crow-Armstrong still looked overmatched as a September call-up in 2023, and he carried a .203 batting average and a .582 OPS into last year's All-Star break. Around that time, Mallee, now the club's assistant hitting coach, worked with Kelly to successfully readjust Crow-Armstrong's positioning and preparation. Advertisement Though that second-half momentum did not carry over into the start of this breakthrough season — Crow-Armstrong had a .197 batting average and zero home runs through the first 17 games — he also did not lose confidence. Once viewed as a defense-first player and a plus base runner, Crow-Armstrong's role has evolved to the point where he's a cleanup hitter for a first-place team. The Cubs are 15 games over .500 after Saturday afternoon's 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates at the Friendly Confines, where you never know what might happen when Crow-Armstrong is at the plate. 'The biggest difference you see in the box is he's more spread out,' Counsell said. 'There's less of a leg kick. There's more rhythm. That's created an ability to be on time more. Frankly, that's mostly a function of a daily routine getting to a good place. You're kind of trying things, little things, all throughout that process. And then, from a hitting perspective, just don't forget the main thing, which is who you are as a hitter, what you're good at. It's kind of reinforcing that through the ups and downs … the results can whiplash you (a bit).' The ability to hammer pitches above the strike zone and near the dirt cannot be taught. At a certain point, Crow-Armstrong's instincts and fast-twitch reflexes take over. The Cubs, though, have provided structure, positive reinforcement and the runway to make mistakes and figure out what works. 'His adjustability is crazy,' Mallee said. 'You got to notice his ability to not hit the ball on the ground. Because he can run. And usually, guys that can run, they say, 'Oh, he's got just enough power to get himself in trouble.' That's not true. He's a power hitter that can run. 'He's trying to hit the ball in the air. He's trying to take a short, direct swing to the ball. But his ability to get the barrel below a ball and lift it (equals) a very low ground-ball rate on balls down in the zone, which is hard to do. 'Pete can pull anybody's fastball in the air when he's right. And he can hit below the zone as well as anybody and not hit it on the ground. Those are two gifts.' Advertisement The league will, of course, continue to adjust to Crow-Armstrong, who already has 18 homers, 23 stolen bases and 57 RBIs in the middle of June. At the same time, he is making his own adjustments, studying opponents and absorbing information. In a sense, he is only just getting started. 'The downs have been big, and great learning experiences, once I got out of my own way,' Crow-Armstrong said. 'You mix that in with a lot of good advice and being able to filter out the right things and the wrong things. That's hugely contributed to how I feel going to the park every day and stepping into the batter's box every day.'

NBA Insider Says Kevin Durant To Knicks Trade Will Be "Complicated" Amid Major Giannis Antetokounmpo Update

NBA Insider Says Kevin Durant To Knicks Trade Will Be "Complicated" Amid Major Giannis Antetokounmpo Update originally appeared on Fadeaway World. After the NBA Playoffs ended for the Bucks, an ESPN report sparked multiple rumors that Giannis Antetokounmpo is expected to be open to considering a trade from the Bucks. Now, another ESPN employee, Brian Windhorst, who is also an NBA insider, puts an end to all the rumors revolving around the Greek superstar in Milwaukee. Advertisement Windhorst appeared on the most recent segment of the 'Get Up' show, where he dropped a massive update on the Bucks superstar's near future. The cast of the 'Get Up' show on ESPN deliberated upon the influence of a Giannis Antetokounmpo or a Kevin Durant trade on the Knicks if they choose to move for either of these players. Windhorst jumped in to quickly drop a massive update on the potential Knicks trade for both superstars. 'There's not going to be a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade in the short-term future. The league has come to terms with the realization that the Bucks are going to keep him and Giannis is not going to ask for a trade. I can't speak to what might happen in August. They can't pin any coaching decision on Giannis Antetokounmpo and they probably shouldn't plan to do it on Kevin Durant either, because I don't think they're in the best position to trade for him. I think you should remove those two options, remove those two as any indications on how they might approach their [head coach hiring].' 'I am saying Giannis Antetokounmpo is not getting traded before the Knicks are hiring a coach. So you can't pin the coach to what you may do when a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade [happens] and I think a Kevin Durant trade is going to be very complicated for the Knicks. I do not think that you can make your decision based on the acquisition of one of these star players,' Windhorst further added. ' What Does This Mean For Giannis Antetokounmpo And Kevin Durant? While the Knicks were rumored to be among the mix to trade for Kevin Durant or Giannis Antetokounmpo. However, Windhorst believes that either of those trades could be messy for New York, and one of them will likely not happen at all [Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Knicks]. While the Knicks can trade for Kevin Durant, Windhorst discourages it as he feels they may have to give up too much to get him. Advertisement The Antetokounmpo update makes it clear that one of the biggest pieces of news we will hear first after the end of this season is where Kevin Durant will land next. Multiple reports have suggested that Durant is essentially standing on top of a sinking ship in the Suns and will look to jump ship as soon as he gets the green light. Some sources even claimed that a trade for him may have already been agreed in principle. With Antetokounmpo now presumably locked into the Bucks for the near future, Durant will likely be the biggest name in the trade market this season. But for the Knicks, bringing Durant on board could be a complicated task. They first need to resolve their head coaching role vacancy before entering the trade market for a superstar. Kevin Durant's Preferred Trade Destinations Revealed: Would Commit Long-Term To 3 Teams

Kevin Durant's Preferred Trade Destinations Revealed: Would Commit Long-Term To 3 Teams originally appeared on Fadeaway World. Kevin Durant is all set to play for his fifth different team in the NBA next season, and his preferred landing spots have now been revealed. ESPN's Shams Charania reports that Durant would like the Phoenix Suns to trade him to the Miami Heat, San Antonio Spurs, or Houston Rockets. Advertisement "The Miami Heat, San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets are 15-time All-Star Kevin Durant's preferred trade destinations out of Phoenix, sources tell ESPN. Those across the NBA have been made aware in recent days that those are the three teams that Durant would commit to long-term." Durant is entering the final year of his four-year, $194 million deal in 2025-26. Once a trade is finalized, the 36-year-old can sign a two-year, $122 million extension on July 6. If he waits another six months, he could sign a two-year, $124 million deal. Durant appears willing to guarantee that he'll sign a new contract only with those three teams, but that won't stop the Suns from potentially sending him elsewhere. "Durant is on an expiring $54.7 million deal for 2025-26, and the Suns have made clear to six-to-eight seriously interested teams that they will make the best deal for the franchise – even outside of his preferred list of Miami, San Antonio and Houston." Advertisement NBA insider Marc Stein reported that the Toronto Raptors are one of the teams willing to gamble by acquiring Durant. The Raptors had, of course, traded for Kawhi Leonard in 2018 when he had just a year left on his contract, despite getting no assurances he would re-sign. The Suns want a bidding war to ensure they get the biggest possible haul for Durant. The 15-time All-Star averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 0.8 steals, and 1.2 blocks per game in 2024-25 while shooting 52.7% from the field and 43.0% from beyond the arc. While the Suns were a complete disaster this season, finishing 11th in the West with a 36-46 record, Durant can still be the missing piece for a team that aspires to win a championship. While it's unlikely he turns the Heat into a contender, the Spurs and the Rockets could make some noise next season with him among their ranks. What's quite interesting about Charania's latest report is that it appears Durant isn't too keen on teaming up with Anthony Edwards on the Minnesota Timberwolves. The insider had previously listed the Timberwolves as one of the three teams leading the race to acquire the two-time NBA champion. Advertisement "You said a week, I think it could be even sooner than that," Charania said. "I think there's some motivation with some teams, potentially even sooner than seven days. Maybe the next few days, we could get some Kevin Durant trade action. There is some serious traction on conversations, on trade scenarios with the Suns. "They've had about six to eight teams reach out," Charania continued. "There's been interest. There's been some offers. There's been some negotiations, but really in the last 24-48 hours I'm told the focus of the Suns' conversation has been on few of the teams, and here they are: the Houston Rockets, the Miami Heat, and the Minnesota Timberwolves." The Spurs were not among the three teams, but Durant is interested in going there. It had also been reported that he saw them as his future destination. The Suns might not be interested in the Spurs' rumored trade package for Durant, though, and it will be interesting to see how this situation pans out.
