REEL MOODY
Film noir, defined by its shadowed and smoky visage, has become a lost art amongst the vibrant, saturated movies of today. But cinephiles and movie lovers (there's a distinction there) alike can take a look back at an Old Hollywood genre of mystery and cynicism at the BPL's screening of the 1951's 'His Kind of Woman.' The movie stars Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell, with a supporting role by Raymond Burr, whom the BPL is celebrating with a series of his films this month.

Anya Taylor-Joy Models This Summer's Must-Have Accessory Trend

Every item on this page was chosen by an ELLE editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy. THE RUNDOWN: Take it from Alexa Chung, Kylie Jenner, and now Anya Taylor-Joy—silk scarves are the hottest accessory of the season. While many have been sporting the item as a belt, as seen on Lola Tung in New York City earlier in July, Taylor-Joy took the trend one step further, twisting and tying three different scarves three separate ways at the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix. The Furiosa actress wrapped a pleated green scarf over her head, allowing her pigtail braids to poke through. With her Dior sunglasses and a cherry-red lip, Taylor-Joy channeled the classic Old Hollywood archetype of a glamorous movie star riding in a convertible down the Italian coastline—an appropriate image for the Formula 1 race. Taylor-Joy also sported a cream lace-trimmed scarf tied around her shoulders, which perfectly complemented her tailored Cinq à Sept shorts, white tank top, and Sam Edelman Mary Janes. To cap it all off, she completed the look with a silk scarf bag by Farm Rio, officially cementing the silk scarf as an easy-yet-dynamic styling tool. The actress was in attendance alongside her husband, Malcolm McRae, who wore his usual uniform of a button-down and slacks. The two were spotted visiting the Ferrari garage and F1 paddock during the qualification session for the Grand Prix. Inside, Taylor-Joy easily popped headphones over her green scarf. She has long been a fan of the Ferrari team, attending numerous races to show her support, and always dressing for the occasion.

This $7 Old School Powder Perfects My Skin

For as long as I can remember, I've had an unwavering fascination for vintage aesthetics, be it midcentury furnishings, Old Hollywood films, or old school beauty products that you can still purchase in the modern day. It's no surprise then that, after discovering this one affordable and perfect-in-every-way setting powder several years ago, the Coty Airspun has remained a steadfast staple in my own makeup routine and probably always will. With a formula harkening back to 1935 — but now updated to be talc-free —the Airspun loose powder offers skin a silky soft veil, truly befitting a silver screen starlet of yesteryear. It manages to blur imperfections and enlarged pores, secure cream and liquid foundations in place and absorb any excess oil — all while feeling imperceptible on the skin.A major upside to the Airspun powder, which I've often seen compared to the luxurious (and expensive) likes of the Laura Mercier and the One/Size setting powders, is that it won't settle into fine lines. Even when I dab a light layer of this under my eyes and around the creases of my nose, it almost absorbs into and fuses with my skin, rather than lying on top of it and creating that dreaded cakey layer.I should also point out that, as someone with naturally very dry skin, I tend to steer far from any skin cosmetics that claim to be mattifying. Not only is my skin not compatible with these types of formulas, but I also detest the chalky finish that ultimately exaggerates any flaking or dryness I might have. Though advertised as a product to mattify, this cloud-like powder doesn't dry my skin out to an inch of its life. Rather, it gives it a soft and smoothed-over appearance that subdues any unwanted shine and almost airbrushes the complexion. Other fans of this vintage icon authenticate my Coty Airspun experience. 'I use this to set my foundation, and it doesn't crease, budge, move, or FLINCH all day,' one Amazon reviewer wrote. 'I am 47, with fine lines around my eyes, but everything else is rather oily. I set my foundation in the morning with this powder and literally don't even have to look at the rest of the day. ' Here's how I use it: After I finish applying my liquid foundation and cream products, I dab my trusty BeautyBlender Power Pocket Puff into a small amount of the loose powder shaken out into the lid, then press it into the skin on my T-zone only, specifically on around my nose, chin and center of the forehead. If I'm wearing a pencil or cream eyeliner, I'll even take a fluffy eye shadow brush and buff a very thin layer on top of the applied eyeliner and before my mascara to keep things completely is also one of the most economical cosmetic products in my kit. As I mentioned, I use the powder quite sparingly (you might want to use more if your skin is more oil-prone), so one 1.23 ounce-sized container literally lasts me years, and it only sets me back $7. I would be remiss if I forgot to mention one other component of this retro powder that, for me, adds to its signature nostalgia: the scent. While some may wrinkle their nose and cry 'granny smell!' I can't get enough, and I'm actually saddened when the slightly floral and distinctive powdery smell dissipates after just a few minutes. Imagine your great-grandmother's dressing table adorned with lipsticks and ornate bottles of perfume somehow captured in a fragrance — that's what Coty Airspun smells like. The Coty Airspun's beauty history runs deep, and so does its dedicated fanbase, which turns out to comprise more than just me. Read what other fans of this timeless and lighter-than-air powder have to say or grab yourself a compact from any of the featured retailers. Get it from Amazon for $6.74 (available in three shades and in two-packs).

Pamela Anderson Channels Vintage Allure in Thom Browne at ‘The Naked Gun' Premiere With Liam Neeson

Pamela Anderson gave classic glamour a subdued elegance spin, wearing a custom sleeveless gown courtesy of Thom Browne for 'The Naked Gun' premiere in New York City on Monday. Anderson collaborated with stylist Bailey Moon, who dressed 'The Last Showgirl' star in a dark satin dress with a bateau neckline. The ensemble featured a cinched waist for added silhouette definition and a flowing skirt for another touch of Old Hollywood inspiration from the 1950s. Her glam featured Anderson's hair coiffed in a style that continued to evoke classic Hollywood, styled by Marcus Francis. As for her accessories, Anderson went minimal and turned to a brand she's long worn and for which she serves as an ambassador. The actress wore pieces courtesy of Pandora, including a custom pair of two carat lab-grown diamond stud earrings. She added more shimmering details to her look with a custom Pandora brooch, adorned on the bodice of Anderson's Thom Browne dress. Anderson was named an ambassador to Pandora in 2023 and has since served as the star for several campaigns, including the Danish jewelry manufacturer and retailer's 2024 holiday campaign. 'Our ambassadors are public figures who uphold the shared idea of love in all forms, and who value quality, beauty and sustainability in their jewelry. Icon Pamela Anderson embodies self-love and serves as a powerful force in today's society, reminding us that gifting to others can also be an act that makes you feel good, too,' Erin Matson, vice president marketing, Pandora North America, said of the actress. Anderson's costar, Liam Neeson, joined the actress on the red carpet and posed together for photos. The Oscar-nominated actor opted for a relaxed take on suited styling, with a mocha-gray tone suit with belted trousers and white dress shirt. 'The Naked Gun,' based on the film series from 1988 to 1994, follows Frank Drebin Jr., played by Neeson, as he leads the haphazard Police Squad team to save the world. The film hits theaters on Friday.
