A school shooting in the Austrian city of Graz leaves at least 8 people and suspected gunman dead
At least eight people were killed in a shooting at a school in the Austrian city of Graz on Tuesday, and the suspected perpetrator also died, the city's mayor said.
Mayor Elke Kahr described the events as a 'terrible tragedy,' the Austria Press Agency reported. It added that the fatalities were seven students and one adult. Kahr said that many people were taken to hospitals with injuries.
Police said they believe the assailant acted alone.
Special forces were among those sent to the BORG Dreierschützengasse high school, about a kilometer (over half a mile) from Graz's historic center, after a call at 10 a.m. At 11.30 a.m., police wrote on social network X that the school had been evacuated and everyone had been taken to a safe meeting point. They wrote that the situation was 'secured' and there is no longer believed to be any danger.
Police deployed in large numbers, with police and other emergency vehicles guarding the area around the school and with at least one police helicopter flying above the area, according to photos published by the regional newspaper Kleine Zeitung.
Graz, Austria's second-biggest city, is located in the southeast of the country and has about 300,000 inhabitants.
Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker said the shooting 'is a national tragedy that deeply shocks our whole country.'
'There are no words for the pain and grief that all of us — the whole of Austria — feel now,' he wrote in a statement posted on X.
President Alexander Van der Bellen said that 'this horror cannot be captured in words.'
'These were young people who had their whole lives ahead of them. A teacher who accompanied them on their way,' he said.
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner was on his way to Graz.
' Schools are symbols for youth, hope and the future,' European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote on X. 'It is hard to bear when schools become places of death and violence.'

Boy, two, accidentally kills his mother with his father's gun while playing with it in front of them
This is the horror moment a two-year-old child accidentally shoots his mum dead after picking up his dad's gun in front of his parents and starting to play with the weapon. Video footage of the sickening incident showed the boy grabbing the firearm from a table and fooling around with it for a few seconds before pulling the trigger as his mum turned to look at him. The couple appeared to be so deep in conversation they failed to notice their son had the Glock 9mm pistol in his hands until it was too late. Tributes paid to ‘selfless' mother killed during skydiving tragedy in Devon
A 'selfless' mother has died in a skydiving incident on Friday with her family left devastated after she fell 15,000ft to her death. Belinda Taylor, 48, had been participating in a tandem skydive at Dunkeswell airfield in Devon when she was killed after jumping from the aircraft. A second skydiver, whose identity has not yet been revealed, also died in the incident. Posting on social media, her partner Scott Armstrong wrote: 'I miss you so much, you were my best friend, thank you for everything you [have] done for me. From making my children feel at home to putting up with my mess.' Her eldest son, Connor Bowles, told DevonLive: 'On Friday, 13 June, our family lost our mum Belinda Taylor. "She was a mother of four children, three adult boys and one teenage girl, and a grandmother to two young children. "She was a selfless woman who wanted only the best for others and especially her loved ones. She will be deeply missed and will leave an everlasting impression on all those she has met in life. "We as a family would like to ask for peace and privacy during this time whilst we grieve our loss and remember our mum as we should do.' Emergency services were called to the area at around 1pm following concerns for the welfare of two people, with both skydivers confirmed dead at the scene. Chief executive of British Skydiving, Robert Gibson, said in a statement: 'Today, Friday 13 June 2025, British Skydiving has been notified of a tragic accident in which two jumpers lost their lives. 'Our deepest condolences go to their families, friends and the entire skydiving community. 'A British Skydiving Board of Inquiry will investigate the accident. 'Once complete, a report – setting out the Board's conclusions and any recommendations – will be submitted to the coroner, the police, the CAA, the British Skydiving Safety & Training Committee (STC) and any other relevant authorities. 'No further details will be provided at this time. We respectfully ask for privacy for all those affected at this difficult time.'
