The Hindu21 hours ago
Irish Foreign Minister Simon Harris will meet representatives of the Indian community in Ireland on Monday (August 11, 2025) to assure them of safety and security, the Embassy of Ireland said on Friday (August 8, 2025), as attacks against Indian community members soared in recent weeks. In a statement, the Embassy here expressed 'shock' about the indiscriminate attacks against the members of the Indian community.
'I want to be so clear — the Indian community in Ireland have made and do make an excellent contribution to Irish society. They are welcome. They are appreciated. Next week, I look forward to meeting the Ireland India Council. Ireland will never ever tolerate racism. Thank you to members of the Indian community in our country for their contributions to our country in so many ways,' said Mr. Harris in a social media post on Friday.
The violent incidents against Indians have been increasing in recent weeks with the latest victims being a six-year-old child and a hotel chef. The Embassy of India in Dublin has been meeting Irish officials over the past month when the attacks suddenly increased.
'The Embassy of Ireland in New Delhi is deeply shockedand saddened by the recent violent attacks against Indian citizens in Ireland. We condemn these attacks in the strongest possible terms. They are an assault on the values of equality and human dignitythat Ireland holds dear,' said the Embassy in the statement. 'Racism and xenophobia have no place in Irish society. The actions of the few do not reflect the spirit of the Irish people.'
Indian authorities have been highlighting the need for quick police action against the perpetrators. On August 1, the Indian Embassy in Dublin issued an advisory urging nationals to take 'reasonable precautions'.

Govt may roll out ₹2,250 crore export promotion mission soon: Official

The government is expected to soon announce support measures under the proposed ₹2,250 crore export promotion mission to help insulate industry from global trade uncertainties arising from Trump tariffs, an official said. "We are in dialogue with exporters to see how we can support them best in different ways, like ease of doing business. We are looking at how to give a boost to domestic consumption. We are looking at new supply chains, which we can capture, new markets, and new products," the official said. The mission may include components, such as easy credit schemes for MSME and e-commerce exporters, facilitation of overseas warehousing, and global branding initiatives to tap emerging export opportunities. The government on February 1 announced the setting up of the mission with an outlay of ₹2,250 crore. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has already made a presentation on the mission to the representatives of export promotion councils and other key stakeholders on April 30. According to industry officials, the mission is divided into two broad categories - Providing Trade Finance Support (NIRYAT PROTSAHAN) and Driving International Holistic Market Access (NIRYAT DISHA) Initiative. Sources have earlier stated that the GST Council is likely to meet soon to discuss rate simplification and rationalisation, and the future of the compensation cess. It will help boost domestic consumption. The commerce ministry, in the past few days, held a series of stakeholder meetings to understand the challenges which they are facing due to high U.S. tariffs on Indian goods. US President Donald Trump has announced 50% tariffs on India. Sectors like textiles, chemicals, leather and footwear are expected to be hit hard by these duties. India's exports remained flat at $35.14 billion in June due to global economic uncertainties, while the trade deficit narrowed to a four-month low of $18.78 billion during the month. Key export sectors, including petroleum, fabrics, gems and jewellery, leather, iron ore, oil seeds, cashew, spices, tobacco, and coffee, recorded negative growth during June. During April-June 2025-26, exports increased 1.92% to $112.17 billion, while imports rose 4.24%nt to $179.44 billion.

CRC: UNHCR to begin refugee status interviews in Delhi

1 2 Aizawl: Chin Refugee Committee (CRC) New Delhi leaders on Saturday said the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has agreed to commence Refugee Status Determination (RSD) interviews, following persistent demands from the CRC, reports HC Vanlalruata. This decision comes after a month-long protest organized by the CRC outside the New Delhi UNHCR office, which began on July 7. The breakthrough was achieved after a meeting between the UNHCR Chief of Mission and CRC leaders on Friday, leading to the initiation of interviews that are crucial for obtaining official refugee status. Until now, only 5% of the 12,000 Myanmar refugees in Delhi had been granted refugee status, with the remaining 95% holding asylum seeker cards. The lack of RSD interviews had been a significant hurdle for the refugees, exacerbated by India's non-signatory status to the 1951 Refugee Status Convention and the 1967 Protocol. Despite this, the UNHCR operates in India to provide protection and support to refugees, primarily from Myanmar and Afghanistan, in collaboration with the Indian government and other partners.
