Cruel vandals 'set fire' to Glasgow nursery garden devastating pupils
Cruel vandals have "set fire" to a children's playhouse at a Glasgow nursery leaving pupils, parents and staff devastated.
Emergency crews raced to Rockfield Nursery on Rockfield Road, in Barmulloch, on Friday night at around 9.38pm after receiving reports of a fire.
Two appliances were sent to battle the blaze and left the scene at 10.12pm after working to make the area safe.
Police Scotland are understood to be investigating the alleged wilful fire. No one was injured in the incident.
A parent whose child attends the nursery told Glasgow Live: "They have set fire to the children's playhouse that had just recently been purchased for them. My child absolutely loved the playhouse and I know it was a very loved piece of garden equipment that cost the nursery a lot of money to buy.
"The garden is one of their biggest assets, all the children love it and they have put a lot of love and effort into it so it's such a shame that they are having to deal with this."
The nursery issued an update to parents on Sunday, July 20, saying "we are saddened by the continued vandalism to our nursery."
They added: "Our children will be devastated when they return on Tuesday, July 22.
"We urge the community to help us stop this. If you have any information that may help us, please contact the nursery.
"We are working with the police to try and resolve this matter."
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 9.38pm on Friday, 18 July to reports of a fire in the open on Rockfield Road, Glasgow.
"Operations Control mobilised two appliances to the scene, where firefighters worked to extinguish the fire. Crews left the scene at 10.12pm after working to make the area safe."
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'Around 10pm on Friday, 18 July, 2025, we received a report of a fire and vandalism at a premises in the Rockfield Road area of Glasgow.
'Officers attended to assist the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and the fire was extinguished. There were no injuries.
'The fire is being treated as wilful and enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances of the incident.'

Car owners warned of new scam which could see them being hit with hefty fines
Drivers should be aware of the sophisticated scam being used by criminals. UK drivers are being warned about a sophisticated new scam that could result in hefty fines for crimes they never committed. Number plate cloning has become a fast-growing criminal enterprise, with thieves systematically scanning social media posts, online marketplaces, and car sale listings to steal registration details from innocent motorists' photos. Criminals create duplicate number plates using clear images found online, then fit them to similar vehicles used in illegal activities. This leaves unsuspecting car owners facing speeding fines, congestion charge penalties, or even police inquiries for offences committed hundreds of miles away. Most disturbingly, many victims only discover they've been targeted when multiple penalty notices start arriving for locations they've never visited. The DVLA and police forces have now issued official warnings acknowledging the reality and explosive growth of this digital-age crime. Transport for London alone reported a mind-boggling 631% increase in cancelled fines due to proven cases of plate cloning, demonstrating how widespread this criminal activity has become. Simple PCP Claims car finance expert Tom Riley, said: "Blurring your reg plate might seem paranoid but it's now basic digital hygiene. "Criminals can buy plate-making equipment online for less than £50 and have your cloned plates ready within hours of spotting your Instagram post." The theft process is disturbingly simple. Criminals use readily available software to scan through thousands of social media images, automatically detecting and harvesting clear registration plate details. These are then fed into illegal plate-making operations that can produce convincing duplicates in minutes. Official advice now includes covering or blurring registration plates as a standard safety precaution when posting any vehicle images online. Fortunately, protecting yourself from plate cloning is straightforward and costs nothing. The most effective defence is simply blurring or covering your registration plate whenever you share car photos online - whether on social media feeds, selling platforms, or car enthusiast groups. If you do receive unexpected fines or correspondence relating to offences you didn't commit, act immediately. Report the incident to both the police and DVLA, providing evidence of your whereabouts and seeking cancellation of any wrongful charges. Many victims successfully get fraudulent penalties cancelled when they can prove cloning. Tom added: "There are thousands of documented cases where innocent drivers receive penalties for crimes they never committed. The irony is that a two-second blur tool could have prevented legal headaches and stress." Motorists were also recently urged to follow smart driving advice, which could result in them using less fuel while on the road. According to experts, drivers could save cash at the petrol pump by simply doing one thing. All motorists have to do is take their foot off the accelerator. The advice centres around a built-in feature present in most modern petrol and diesel cars, and it could save drivers significantly when fuelling up.

Alex Salmond cleared of historic sex assault claim
The late former first minister Alex Salmond has been cleared of a historic sexual assault claim. Police Scotland said the enquiries into the allegations made after his death were carried out and no further action will be taken. Salmond died in October 2024 in North Macedonia after suffering a massive heart attack while attending a conference. Following his death, Police Scotland confirmed a non-recent sexual assault allegation had been made against the late Alba Party leader. On Thursday, a Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'Following a report of a non-recent sexual assault, enquiries were carried out and no further action will be taken.' Salmond served as first minister under the SNP from 2007 to 2014 and led the party through the independence referendum. He resigned from the SNP in 2018 when allegations of sexual misconduct emerged. The following year, he was charged with 14 offences, including two counts of attempted rape. He was acquitted of all charges in March 2020 following a two-week trial. He successfully took the Scottish Government to court to prove that the way civil servants handled complaints against him was tainted with bias, receiving more than £500,000 in legal compensation. In 2023, he launched a fresh legal bid against the Scottish Government over its handling of abuse allegations towards him. He had accused his former deputy and first minister Nicola Sturgeon and other senior women in Government of misconduct in public office. Salmond returned to politics in 2021, becoming leader of the newly formed Alba Party.
