On Tuesday night São Paulo And Vélez Sarsfield joined Racing Club in qualifying for the quarter finals of the 2025 Copa Libertadores. Vélez Defeats Fortaleza Vélez Sarsfield will take on their Buenos Aires neighbours Racing in the quarter finals of the tournament after defeating Fortaleza of Brazil in the round of 16. Vélez, who won an Argentinian league title in 2024, won just four of the first 16 league games this season. That poor domestic form hasn't halted continental performance though. Vélez won the Copa Libertadores for the first and only time in 1994 but they intend to double that trophy haul this year. The Argentinian club drew the first leg 0-0 in Brazil and enjoyed a 2-0 win at home in the second leg on Tuesday night. Fortaleza, in truth, played badly on the night. The visiting team didn't create any clear-cut chances in the game and Vélez raced into a 2-0 lead within 30 minutes. As the rain poured down on Buenos Aires, Maher Carrizo gave the hosts the lead with a header after just seven minutes of the match. 20 minutes later Fortaleza's famous striker Deyverson gifted the ball to Vélez in the midfield and Tomás Galván doubled the lead within seconds. There was no coming back from an uninspiring Fortaleza outfit who currently sits way down in 19th position in the Brazilian Série A table. At least the club can now focus on rescuing what has been a dismal league campaign to date. São Paulo Keeps Libertadores Dream Alive São Paulo, by the clubs own very high standards, have been unsuccessful in continental competition recently. Between 1992 and 2005 the club won three Copa Libertadores titles and three intercontinental titles, but since then 'SPFC' has struggled to win silverware. The 2023 Copa do Brasil title has helped return confidence to the epic Morumbis stadium, which always bursts into life on Copa Libertadores nights. On Tuesday São Paulo welcomed Colombian side Atlético Nacional for the second leg of their encounter, after a cagey 0-0 draw in the opening leg in Medellín. Like the Racing Club and Peñarol encounter on the same night, this game was full of action and boasted an atmosphere fit to host a Copa Libertadores final, never mind round of 16 clash. Within the first ten minutes of the game both sides might have scored, but it was hosts São Paulo that took the lead with a header at the back post. The home supporters might have expected an easier night from then on, but Atlético Nacional, who has won two Copa Libertadores titles in its history, fought back until it found a second half equaliser. Penalty Kicks Separated The Teams Atlético Nacional were fantastic on the night, playing expansive football away from home. The Colombian side actually managed more expected goals than São Paulo (1.65 to 1.53) but home goalkeeper Rafael and centre-back Alan Franco had big defensive moments to remember. The former Glasgow Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos scored the Atlético Nacional goal from the penalty spot, and it would be penalty kicks that would decide the match after the two teams remained deadlocked during the game. The shoot-out was incredibly tense, but the home side won by four goals to three when the final Nacional kick-taker Marino Hinestroza failed to convert. The miss sparked scenes of jubilation in the São Paulo stadium and the hosts can now look forward to a tie against the winners of Botafogo or LDU Quito in the next round.

Racing Club of Argentina recorded a historic victory over Uruguayan club Peñarol in the Copa Libertadores on Tuesday night. Racing Club won the game 3-1 and the tie 3-2 on aggregate to qualify for the quarter finals of the competition. An Explosive Atmosphere Racing Club had a date with destiny in a drenched 'Cilindro' stadium in Avellaneda on Tuesday night. The Buenos Aires club welcomed five-time champion Peñarol who held the lead in this tie with a 1-0 home victory in the first leg. Fans packed into the standing sections behind the goal like sardines. The noise in the arena was mind-blowing. Racing supporters knew they needed to come from behind to defeat a strong opponent on the night, and they did everything in their power to get behind the team. It was obvious that there were more home fans in the stadium than the legal capacity, but this is common practice in South America on big match days. The atmosphere was hostile and fervent. A strong section of yellow and black in the upper tier added their own noise and colour. The Peñarol fans had traveled in their thousands too, with Copa Libertadores dreams of their own. The night turned into a rollercoaster for both sets of supporters. Early Goals At The Cilindro Racing was ahead within minutes. The rain poured, and the stadium lifted, as Adrián Martínez bundled in after a goal-mouth scramble. The Racing bench jumped onto the pitch in celebration but little did they know the twists and turns still to come. Peñarol equalised minutes later, and that was after another missed chance. The Uruguayans weren't in Buenos Aires to make up the numbers which added to the incredible spectacle. As did the weather. The ball moved faster in some parts of the pitch and slower in others as the resting rain water had a significant impact on the drama. Former Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo thought he had scored a second for Racing, but the referee disallowed the goal because Rojo pushed a Peñarol defender in the build-up. Both teams had big chances in this encounter. Racing had 26 shots and Peñarol had 16. The game was open, providing edge of the seat action, just as you would expect from the finest competition in South American soccer. Pure Copa Libertadores Drama As both teams continued to squander opportunities in the second half Peñarol stayed in the lead on aggregate. Then in the 83rd minute the referee handed the hosts a golden opportunity. Peñarol defender Emanuel Gularte gave away a clumsy foul and Racing was awarded a penalty. Adrián Martínez dispatched expertly to send the crowd into rapturous applause. Racing had the winner on the night and the leveller in the tie, and there was still time for more. Then touchline theatrics struck. The referee sent off both Marcos Rojo and Bruno Zuculini in the 87th minute, even though they weren't on the pitch at the time. On the field, both teams pressed again. Either might have scored inside 20 seconds of what felt more like a basketball game than a soccer match. Then Peñarol broke forward again, this time a header from the edge of the six-yard box was directed straight at the keeper. You could barely keep up with the action. The home fans had their hearts in their mouths. Racing Club Advances To The Quarter Finals Then in the 94th minute the entire stadium exploded with emotion. Franco Pardo headed in a third goal for Racing club, peeling off at the back post to finish a set-piece for the hosts and send Racing into the quarter finals. The stands erupted in pandemonium as Racing went ahead 3-2 on aggregate at the very death. The final whistle sounded and the agony and the ecstasy of tournament soccer was laid bare for all to see. Racing celebrated as if they had already won the tournament and Peñarol simply couldn't believe the outcome of the tie after leading for so long. The Uruguayan side will have to wait another year but Racing's pursuit of continental glory continues. Racing, who won the Copa Sudamericana last year, will face another Argentinian side, Vélez Sarsfield, in the quarter finals of the Copa Libertadores next month.

YouTube Unveils Broadcasters For Platform's First-Ever Live NFL Game
On Tuesday, YouTube announced the broadcast talent for its first-ever live NFL game. The Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs will meet at Corinthians Arena in São Paulo, Brazil on Sept. 5. Sports media veteran Rich Eisen, who is expected to once again appear on ESPN platforms following the company's recent acquisition of NFL Network, will serve as the play by play caller for the Week 1 matchup. It's the NFL's second consecutive year playing a regular season game in Brazil. Eisen will be joined by analyst and Super Bowl XXXIV champion Kurt Warner. Stacey Dales and YouTuber Donald De La Haye, who is also known as Deestroying, will both serve as sideline reporters for the free exclusive broadcast on the video platform, which has experienced a rise in recent years as a sports programming destination for media networks, leagues and teams. Deestroying, a former player at Central Florida, boasts more than 6.3 million subscribers on YouTube where he's documented his journey of trying to become an NFL kicker. He played for the UFL's San Antonio Brahmas over the last two seasons but was plagued by recurring injuries. Rules expert Terry McAulay will also join the YouTube broadcast. Meanwhile, sports media personality Kay Adams, who hosts the daily 'Up & Adams Show' on FanDuel TV, will host the on-site show in Brazil with Heisman Trophy winner and analyst Cam Newton, a three-time Pro Bowler and NFL Most Valuable Player in 2015. At the NFL Network's studios in Los Angeles, Brandon Marshall — a six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver across 13 seasons in the NFL — will moderate the conversation around the game in South America. He will be joined by analysts Derek Carr, who retired in May after an 11-year career mostly with the Las Vegas Raiders, and Tyrann Mathieu, a former standout defensive back at LSU and Super Bowl champion. Fantasy football analyst Peter Overzet will also provide commentary and analysis for the regular season game, which will feature Colombia singer Karol G as the halftime performer during the first-ever live NFL game on YouTube.
