TikTok prank turns deadly: US teen shot dead during ‘ding dong ditch', homeowner charged with murder
According to the New York Post, the incident occured when Michael Bosworth Jr, 18, and two of his friends, knocked on a door in a residential neighbourhood as part of the prank. Moments later, a hail of gunfire left Bosworth dead and one of his friends wounded, according to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office.
Tyler Chase Butler, 27, the homeowner, told detectives he believed the teenagers were trying to break into his home. However, statements from the surviving teens tell a different story. One of the boys, who was grazed by a bullet, told police that they were simply filming a prank for TikTok and looking for a place to hide when gunshots rang out, according to documents reviewed by local media.
The third teenager, who was not injured, also told investigators the group was playing 'ding dong ditch,' a game where participants knock or ring someone's doorbell before running away.
Bosworth was a student at Massaponax High School, where he played football and lacrosse and was also on the wrestling team. The shooting occurred just hours before his high school prom was set to take place.
Butler was arrested Tuesday and is now facing several charges, including second-degree murder, malicious wounding, and two counts of using a firearm during the commission of a felony. He is currently being held without bond at Rappahannock Regional Jail.
A similar incident took place in 2020, when a 45-year-old Indian-origin man killed three 16-year-old boys and seriously injured three others for a doorbell prank. In 2023, he was convicted on murder charges for deliberately ramming the teenagers' vehicle with his car. He was sentenced to life.

Digital arrest scam mastermind held by Goa cops
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Panaji, Aug 17 (PTI) The Goa Cyber Crime Police have arrested the alleged mastermind behind a Rs 1 crore 'digital arrest" scam, upon his arrival at Delhi airport from Singapore, an officer said on Sunday. He was taken into custody on August 15 and remanded to five days of police custody, according to Superintendent of Police (Cyber Crime) Rahul Gupta. The accused Anil Tripathi, a resident of Marina Bay Financial Centre in Singapore, is the seventh person arrested in connection with the case registered in December 2024 at Marna, Siolim (North Goa), said Gupta. The scam involved a fraudster impersonating a Delhi Crime Branch officer on WhatsApp and coercing a woman into believing she was involved in a police case. The accused allegedly sent forged Supreme Court documents and forced the victim to transfer Rs 1 crore through multiple transactions into three different bank accounts, police said. 'Tripathi was tracked through technical and financial analysis, as well as the interrogation of previously arrested suspects. A Look Out Circular had been issued, leading to his detention at Delhi airport and subsequent transit to Goa," said Gupta. Investigators claimed that Tripathi is a repeat offender. He was previously arrested in Singapore for a fake tech support scam amounting to USD 64,000, in which he funnelled about USD 15,000 into his Indian bank accounts from a senior Singaporean citizen. The current case is registered under Sections 318, 319(2), and 336(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Section 66-D of the Information Technology Act. 2 US Carnival Cruise Passengers Drown Hours Apart At Newly Opened Luxury Resort
Two American cruise passengers, a 79-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman, drowned in separate incidents at Carnival Cruise Line's newly opened Celebration Key resort on Grand Bahama Island on August 15. The incidents occurred just hours apart at the $600 million resort, which opened on July 19. According to the New York Post, the man became unresponsive while snorkelling at the beach around noon. Lifeguards quickly responded and pulled him ashore, where CPR was administered. Unfortunately, despite these efforts, the man was pronounced dead by a medical doctor shortly after. Later that day, around 2:30 PM, a second incident occurred on a separate cruise ship, where a 74-year-old woman was found unresponsive in one of the resort's freshwater lagoons and could not be revived despite CPR efforts. "The initial report suggests that the female became unresponsive while swimming in a pool," police said in a release shared on Facebook. The two victims were passengers on separate Carnival cruise ships: the Mardi Gras, which departed from Port Canaveral, Florida, and the Carnival Elation, which sailed from Jacksonville, Florida. The Royal Bahamas Police Force is investigating, with autopsies pending to determine the exact causes of death. Carnival Cruise Line said in a statement obtained by People, "Our lifeguards and medical team responded to two separate water emergency incidents at Celebration Key on Friday — one in the lagoon and one at the beach. Sadly, both guests have passed away. One guest was sailing with family on Mardi Gras, and one guest was sailing with family on Carnival Elation. Our thoughts and prayers are with the guests and their families, and our Care Team is providing assistance." Celebration Key is a luxurious private resort that features the world's largest freshwater lagoon, Starfish Lagoon, and an impressive 11,000-square-foot infinity pool at the Pearl Cove Beach Club. The resort also offers a range of activities, including paddleboarding, as well as various dining options to suit every taste.
