Dilip Kumar wrote his own dialogues, reveals Mumtaz: ‘He wouldn't say dialogues written by anyone else, wrote his own'

Indian Express24-05-2025

Veteran actor Mumtaz starred in several hit films with Dara Singh at the beginning of her career and was often tagged as a 'B-grade actor' by many in the Hindi film industry. While all the A-list actors refused to work with her because of this label, Dilip Kumar came to her rescue and decided to cast her in his 1969 film Ram Aur Shyam. In a recent interview, Mumtaz expressed her gratitude for the actor while she revealed that Dilip Kumar would write his own dialogues, and never said the dialogues that were writtenf or him.
During a conversation with Radio Nasha, Mumtaz recalled how Mehmood introduced her to Dilip Kumar and showed him her reel, asking him to cast her in Ram Aur Shyam. She said, 'Dilip Kumar looked at the reel and said, 'She is beautiful and she dances well. I will do the film with her.' I'm very thankful to him. When he agreed to do the film with me that's why I could become an actor. If he would have said 'no', I couldn't have become an actor.' Mumtaz added that because the then-superstar agreed to star in a film with her, other actors followed suit. 'When he agreed to do the film with me, nobody else refused. Everybody worked with me after that,' she said.
Mumtaz also shared an interesting fact about Dilip Kumar and how the late legendary star would write his own dialogues. She recalled, 'Dilip Kumar was very down-to-earth. He would write his own dialogues, he wouldn't say dialogues written by anyone else. Unless the director emphasised, he wouldn't say anything written by anyone else.' Mumtaz did not specify if this was Dilip's style of working across all his films, or just for Ram Aur Shyam.
Dilip Kumar famously chose Ram Aur Shyam after he was told by a psychologist to choose lighter subjects. After working in Devdas, Dilip's mental health suffered a bit so he chose a comedy that allowed him to take a break from serious roles.

In an earlier interaction with Dawn News, Mumtaz had spoken about why she wasn't choosy with her roles at the beginning of her career. 'I was given the label of a B-grade actor because I did a lot of small roles. I also did comedy with Mehboob sahab. I just closed my eyes and did work. I thought the rest is in god's hands. My start in the film industry was wrong. I won't blame the heroes for not working with me because everybody wants to climb the ladder of success. But Mehboob sahab showed one of my scenes to Dilip Kumar sahab and asked him if he would work with me in Ram Aur Shyam. He told him that the girl was nice and he agreed. Dilip sahab was a very down-to-earth person,' she had said.

Housefull 5 Box Office Collection day 1: Decent start for Akshay Kumar's film, crosses ₹13 crore on opening day

Housefull 5 Box Office Collection day 1: The much-awaited film, Housefull 5, starring Akshay Kumar and his gang released in cinema on Friday. Off to a decent start, the murder mystery has crossed ₹ 13 crore at the box office. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Housefull 5 has so far minted ₹ 13.81 crore. However, these are the real-time updates from morning and afternoon. The final figures will be out after 10 pm. If the film maintains similar momentum during the evening and night shows, its total earnings could potentially double by the end of the day. Housefull 5 had an overall 20.93% Occupancy on Friday in 2D format. The 3D format saw an occupancy of 10.76% on June 06, 2025. Cities like Mumbai, Delhi NCR and Ahmedabad had the highest occupancy with the highest number of screenings for the film in all formats. Following closely is Pune, Bengaluru and Surat on the list. Overall, the film has done better business than expected. Going by its advance sales booking, the film was set to premiere with ₹ ₹ 6.87 crore gross earnings (including the blocked seats). Housefull 5 is clashing with the Hindi version of Kamal Haasan's Thug Life which was released a day ahead of Housefull 6. Thug Life, however, has received an underwhelming response. On the other hand, both the films are also clashing with Maddock Films' Bhool Chuk Maaf, starring Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi. Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, ''HOUSEFULL 5' IS AKSHAY KUMAR'S WIDEST OVERSEAS RELEASE... The much-awaited #Housefull5 has released in… 85+ countries 1300+ locations 2000+ screens.' He also reviewed the film and called it 'Dhamaal'. "#OneWordReview… #Housefull5: DHAMAAL. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️½ The #Housefull franchise returns with a bang – this time, it's bigger, louder, and crazier... A paisa-vasool entertainer with madness, a thrilling climax, and mass-moments galore. #Housefull5Review. First things first: In a film like #Housefull5, logic takes a backseat... The key is to surrender yourself to the craziness and enjoy the rollercoaster ride. 'Director #TarunMansukhani infuses fresh energy into the franchise, while retaining the essence that fans have loved over the years... #HF5 continues the series' tradition of over-the-top humour, madcap storytelling, and visual extravaganza. The writing is peppered with witty one-liners, quirky twists, and cleverly staged gags... In short, #HF5 strikes the right balance between madness and masala,' his post read. Taran also mentioned what did not work in the film for him. He added, 'Minus points? A few jokes feel dated and forced. Some supporting characters are underutilized. The post-interval screenplay could've been tighter.'

‘Mere paas janta hai': How Bollywood and Hindi are powering Mira Nair's son Zohran Mamdani's run for NYC mayor

Zohran Mamdani, a New York State Assembly member and Democratic mayoral candidate, has turned to Bollywood to fire up his campaign for the city's mayoral race, and is doing it using the lingua franca of those of South Asian descent – Hinglish. In a video posted on social media, Mamdani—who could become the first South Asian mayor of New York City—invokes the cinematic legacy of Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Kishore Kumar to challenge front-runner Andrew Cuomo, in a campaign message that feels more like a film trailer than a typical political ad. It is quite fitting as he is the son of acclaimed Indian filmmaker Mira Nair, who has directed internationally acclaimed films such as Monsoon Wedding and The Namesake. The background music is Deewanagi Deewangi from the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Om Shanti Om. The video opens with a scene from Deewar (1975), where Amitabh Bachchan, playing the hardened Vijay, faces off with his idealistic brother Ravi (Shashi Kapoor). In the original, Vijay boasts: 'Aaj mere paas buildingein hain, property hai, bangla hai, bank balance hai, gaadi hai. Tumhare paas kya hai? ('Today I have buildings, property, a bungalow, a bank balance, and a car. What do you have?' The video cuts before Shashi Kapoor can reply. Instead, Mamdani appears on screen, arms stretched wide in Shah Rukh Khan's signature pose—his answer: 'Main paas janta hai' (I have the people). His campaign weaves Bollywood nostalgia into political messaging. The iconic scene from Amitabh Bachchan's Deewar, a symbol of class conflict and moral divide in Hindi cinema, is reimagined for American politics for his immigrant voter base. And the SRK pose—made famous in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and repeated across his filmography, makes him instantly relatable. Billionaires ke paas already sab kuchh hai. Ab, aapka time aageya. Billionaires already have everything. Now, your time has come. — Zohran Kwame Mamdani (@ZohranKMamdani) June 4, 2025 Using Kishore Kumar's voice from the film Karz (1980), Mamdani introduces the idea of ranked-choice voting with a clever twist: 'Hey, have you ever voted for anyone? Have you ever ranked anyone?'—a playful but pointed question to New York's multilingual electorate. He also uses the beloved summer beverage, lassi (buttermilk), to explain rank-based voting. Urging the electorate not to vote for Cuomo, whom he marks as his primary adversary, he uses the lyrics: 'Khana milega pina milega bhaiya ki shadi hai sab kuch milega' to subtly send home the message that while Donald Trump-backed candidate may offer freebees, real change will be elusive. This is followed by the line: 'Billionaires already have everything. Now your time has come.' In yet another nod to classic Hindi cinema, Mamdani invokes the phrase 'Roti, Kapda aur Makaan', the title of the 1974 Manoj Kumar film, to drive home the election plank of basic affordability, a key theme of his campaign. The video presents a stark contrast between Mamdani's populist pitch and Cuomo's elite image. Though Mamdani is speaking to New Yorkers, the language, music, and imagery are unmistakably Indian. After all, his target electorate comprises South Asian immigrants, first-generation voters, and working-class communities who might not see themselves in typical political campaigns. The election will take place on June 24.
