The McDonald's at Ridout Tea Garden in Singapore boasts zen vibes on a Japanese-style pavilion overlooking a serene river.
This unique eatery a has been a prominent landmark in the area since 1989.
It was established inside the country's first Japanese-themed community garden and offers picturesque views for diners.
Ridout first began as Queenstown Japanese Garden, which was opened in 1970.

It became a popular leisure venue for the nearby residents and consisted of 23 shops that sold everything from furniture and sports equipment to clothes and electronic goods.
And of course, food and beverages could be purchased at the garden's singular restaurant called Queen's Garden Restaurant, which offered both Western and Chinese cuisines.
However, a fire destroyed the property in June 1978, with almost all the shops going up in smoke.
The local government invested in rebuilding the location, which was renamed Ridout after the nearby roundabout.

But despite the scenic remodel, the space lacked the crowds of Queenstown due to the limited retail and dining options.

McDonald's rolls out new lineup of iced drinks
McDonald's is rolling out a new lineup of iced drinks in more than 500 US restaurants in a fresh threat to Starbucks. Bosses at the Golden Arches are drawing on lessons learned from their CosMc's experiment. The chain will roll out about 10 beverages, including Toasted Vanilla Frappe, Sprite Lunar Splash, Strawberry Watermelon Refresher, Popping Topic Refresher, and Creamy Vanilla Cold Brew. CosMc's, launched in 2023, was McDonald's way of experimenting with bold flavors and unique drinks before bringing them to a wider audience. Although the mini-chain closed earlier this year, the new iced drinks borrow directly from the flavors and customer feedback tested at those locations. Social media reactions have been mixed. Some customers praise the inventive flavors, while others say they feel like a desperate bid for attention. 'They look good and I'm not their target audience, but I may have to try them, just as a celebration of them actually listening to their customer,' a LinkedIn member wrote. 'It just doesn't feel on brand for I'm not sure about the name either. Time will tell,' a fan commented. The drinks will launch at locations across Wisconsin and Colorado on September 2. McDonald's says the test is 'a big step' in its broader plan to expand cold beverage options nationwide. They're also similar to popular beverages served by competitors like Starbucks, Taco Bell and Wendy's. McDonald's has a history of experimental concepts, some more successful than others — including its McPlant meat-free burger and CosMc's spinoff brand . The company opened its first CosMc's in 2023 a way to test new beverages to add to its core menus in its main restaurants. The first location in Bolingbrook, Illinois initially saw double the number of drive-thru visitors compared to an average McDonald's stores, but business slowed. Although the chain initially planned 10 CosMc's, it peaked at five and closed the remaining locations in June this year . 'We're seeing real momentum in beverages, with more people – especially our Gen Z fans – turning to cold, flavorful drinks as a go-to treat,' said Alyssa Buetikofer, chief customer experience and marketing officer, McDonald's USA. 'It's a great opportunity for us to meet our US customers' evolving tastes and show up in new moments, like afternoon refreshment or snack breaks.' McDonald's has been working to lure back customers after US sales dropped 3.6 percent in the first quarter. Sales rebounded in the second quarter , helped by extended operating hours and its biggest hiring push since 2020 . The drinks were a hit, prompting the chain to launch limited-time offerings such as Sabrina's Strawberry Daydream Refresher . Taco Bell jumped in last year with its first Live Mas Cafe last year — a drinks-focused concept offering coffees, refreshers and shakes. The chain plans to expand to over 30 locations by year-end.

India's Tata Motors returns to South African car market after six years
JOHANNESBURG, Aug 20 (Reuters) - India's Tata Motors ( opens new tab returned to South Africa's passenger vehicles market after a six-year absence, launching three ranges of SUVs and an entry-level compact hatchback to take on Chinese competitors. Growing demand for budget-friendly cars is luring global automakers to offer consumers more options, in a shift that spotlights rising reliance on low-cost imports from India and China, but puts a question-mark on future domestic production. "Our aspiration, as part of our mid-term plan, is to be one of the top five passenger vehicles in South Africa, with a 6% to 8% market share," Thato Magasa, the new country head for Tata Motor Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) said at Tuesday's launch. Tata unveiled the Punch compact sports utility vehicle (SUV), the Curvv coupe-inspired SUV, the compact hatchback Tiago and its flagship premium SUV Harrier, all combustion engine cars that go on sale from September. Its return pits Tata against a rising tide of Chinese automakers such as Chery Group, BYD ( opens new tab, Beijing Automotive and GWM ( opens new tab, which have offered competitively priced vehicles with different powertrains in recent years. Tata exited the passenger vehicles market in 2019 after selling brands such as its Indica hatchback, some of which were affordable but drew mixed reactions from consumers who opted for rivals. It retained commercial vehicle operations in South Africa, however. "We have listened, we have learned, and we have tailored our offering to meet South Africa's needs," Shailesh Chandra, managing director for TMPV and electric mobility, said at the event. In the second phase of its re-entry, Tata plans to bring its Nexon and Sierra SUVs to South Africa, operating through 40 dealerships nationwide, with plans to expand to 60 by 2026, Magasa added. Tata's passenger car division has appointed as its exclusive distributor Motus Holdings (MTHJ.J), opens new tab, South Africa's leading automotive group, which imports, distributes and sells cars.

Dollar falls as Trump calls on Fed's Cook to resign
NEW YORK, Aug 20 (Reuters) - The dollar fell on Wednesday after U.S. President Donald Trump called on Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook to resign, as investors also waited on a speech by Fed Chair Jerome Powell on Friday for clues on interest rate policy. Trump cited a call by the head of the U.S. Federal Housing Finance Agency urging the Department of Justice to probe Cook over alleged mortgage fraud. Spokespeople for Cook and the Fed did not immediately respond to requests for comment. 'The market has voted with its pocketbook that it doesn't like when the president interferes with the Federal Reserve,' said Marc Chandler, chief market strategist at Bannockburn Global Forex in New York. Trump has been critical of Powell for being to slow to cut rates, and traders expect he will replace the Fed Chair with a more dovish appointment when his term ends in May. But Powell may stay on the board of governors, which would limit how many appointments Trump may make and could crimp plans to form a more dovish composition of policymakers. 'This is just a thinly veiled attempt to get control of the Federal Reserve, because if Powell doesn't step down as Governor when his chair ends, Trump's only appointment is the Kugler seat that he gave to Miran temporarily,' Chandler said. Trump earlier this month said he would nominate Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Stephen Miran to serve out the final few months of a vacant Fed seat after Fed Governor Adriana Kugler unexpectedly resigned. The dollar index , which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies including the yen and the euro, was last down 0.16% on the day at 98.16, with the euro up 0.15% at $1.1664. The Japanese yen strengthened 0.21% against the greenback to 147.37 per dollar. Traders are focused this week on whether Powell will push back against market expectations for a rate cut at the Fed's September 16-17 meeting when he speaks at the U.S. central bank's Jackson Hole meeting on Friday, following a weak jobs report for July. Powell has said he is reluctant to cut rates on expectations that Trump's tariff policies will increase inflation this summer. Consumer price inflation data for July showed limited impact from tariffs but hotter than expected producer price inflation has tempered expectations for how many cuts are likely this year. Fed funds futures traders are currently pricing in 85% odds of a cut next month, and 54 basis points of cuts by year-end. Later on Wednesday, the Fed will issue the minutes of its July 29–30 meeting, when it held rates steady, although they may offer limited insight as the meeting came before the weak jobs numbers. The New Zealand dollar dropped 1.04% to $0.5831, a four month low, after the country's central bank cut its policy rate by 25 basis points to a three-year low of 3.00% and flagged further reductions in coming months as policymakers warned of domestic and global headwinds to growth. The Swedish crown strengthened 0.1% to 9.59 after Sweden's central bank held its key interest rate at 2.00% as expected. Sterling weakened 0.07% to $1.3481 after British inflation hit its highest in 18 months in July, but was not seen as swaying Bank of England policy. "The BoE is more concerned about food inflation, which hasn't changed much in today's release," ING's head of research Chris Turner said. In cryptocurrencies, bitcoin fell 0.22% to $113,324.
