South Africa captain divides cricket fans as he refuses to surpass Brian Lara

Cricket fans were left baffled after Wiaan Mulder opted not to chase Brian Lara's record of 400 not out as he declared on 367 against Zimbabwe, with some accused him of "belittling" his opponents
South Africa cricket captain Wiaan Mulder has left fans divided after spurning the chance to beat legendary Brian Lara 's record of 400 not out, as he insisted the West Indies icon keeping the landmark was "exactly the way it should be".
Mulder put in a sensational batting display against Zimbabwe but decided to declare with his score on 367, 33 runs short of Lara's feat as South Africa finished on 626-5.

It was still the fifth-highest score in Test history and Mulder insisted his decision was partly because he thought the team had enough in their innings - and partly because he wanted Lara's "special" record to stand.

Speaking to South African broadcaster SuperSport, he said: "First things first, I thought we'd got enough and we need to bowl. And secondly Brian Lara is a legend, let's be real. He got 400 against England and for someone of that stature to keep that record is pretty special.
"If I get the chance again I'd probably do the same thing. I was speaking to our coach Shukri Conrad and he kind of said to me, 'Listen, let the legends keep the really big scores'.
"And you never know what my fate or whatever you want to call it, or what's destined for me, but I think Brian Lara keeping that record is exactly the way it should be."

Mulder's bore immediate fruit as Codi Yusuf caught Takudzwanashe Kaitano off the first ball of Zimbabwe's innings. They were bowled out for just 170.
Mulder also took two for 20 in that time, but fans were still left scratching their heads over his huge call to not chase Lara's record.

One fan said the move was actually "disrespectful" to both Zimbabwe and Lara, as they wrote: "Lara won't ever want to not break his record out of 'respect' because that's 'pity' in disguise."
Another added: "I think this was an error of judgement. He should have went for the record ad then declared. Now it seems like he belittled Zimbabwe, which is not right."
But other fans suggested that Mulder was right not to break the record against a lesser opponent in a game that was not defining.
One user added: "There is difference between scoring against England and Zimbabwe. His decision was right, scoring against a weak team to set a new record ain't cool."
Another wrote: "To each his own. I agree with this 100%! Lara is an all time icon. He scored 400 in 1994 against England. Mulder scoring and breaking the record against Zimbabwe doesn't feel right and he personally also felt the same. Credit to him."

Ammanford racer drops to third position in Supersport Cup

Despite making a great start at the feature race on Sunday, July 6 at the Knockhill Circuit, rainy weather conditions caused Lewis Jones to suffer some issues with his bike and meant he was unable to complete the race. Before the warmup, the track was still partially wet, albeit with a drying race line, so the team checked the settings were set for wet conditions, as the afternoon forecast was rain. Lewis now has 87 points in the championship, four points behind second. (Image: Gavin Elliott) Following a non-finish, Lewis now has 87 points in the championship, four points behind second. Knockhill is known for its unpredictable weather conditions and both the morning and afternoon practice sessions on Friday, July 4 saw rain fall and gusty winds on the circuit. Lewis attained a best lap time of 58.925 in the first free practice and a best lap time of 1.00.014 in the second free practice. Lewis attained a best lap time of 58.925 in the first free practice. (Image: Gavin Elliott) On Saturday, July 5, the qualifying race and sprint race commenced. Qualifying the track was dry so the team made changes to accommodate for the dry conditions. Lewis managed a time of 52.046 which was good enough for P16 in the session and resulted in a combined qualifying of P34 and P4 in the Supersport Cup Championship. Lewis had to deal with rainy weather conditions. (Image: Gavin Elliott) However, the rain returned for the sprint race just as Lewis and the team prepared to leave the awning to make their way to the grid. The team quickly changed the dry tyres for wet before Lewis lined up on the grid. There was only a small window of time to adjust the bike settings to fully accommodate the wet conditions. The next race is at Brands Hatch in Kent. (Image: Gavin Elliott) This rain turned out to be a short sharp shower and as the race progressed the track dried very quickly. Lewis had a full wet front and an intermediate rear tyre, so as the laps counted down to the finish, the tyre combination wasn't giving Lewis the optimum grip for fast laps, resulting in him finishing P23 and P3 in the Supersport cup championship. In the next round, Lewis travels to Brands Hatch in Kent.

‘This is the one everyone wants to win': Davey Todd thrilled to make it a hat-trick of Solo wins at Southern 100

Todd beat a determined Dean Harrison, with Michael Dunlop rounding out the podium positions in third. Both Todd and Harrison blasted the previous outright lap record, which was set by Harrison in 2022 at 116.941mph. Todd (8TEN Racing BMW) raised the benchmark to 117.414mph in the nine-lap finale but runner-up Harrison had the consolation of the absolute record following a final lap of 117.54mph on his Honda. Todd won the blue riband highlight for the first time in 2022 and repeated the feat again last year after the race was cancelled in 2023 following a fatal accident. He took the spoils by just 0.413s from Harrison, with Dunlop having a somewhat lonely ride to third on his MD Racing BMW. Todd's Solo Championship success completed a quadruple for the 29-year-old this year after Superbike and Supersport victories on Wednesday, and a Superbike double on Thursday. 'This is the one everybody wants to win,' said a jubilant Todd. 'I didn't want to show all my cards in the other races and I think everybody was keeping a bit in hand for this last race. 'I let Dean past because I wanted to sit behind him for a bit but he was trying to slow the pace up to get the others involved, so I put my head down and did some decent laps. 'I knew if I could hit all my marks and not make any mistakes then we should be good.' Harrison, a double winner at the TT in the Superstock races, said his Honda was at a disadvantage against Todd's BMW on the fastest parts of the course. 'I led for a bit but he has the edge on me down the big straights here,' Harrison said. 'But the Superstock Honda has done well, to be fair, and thanks to everyone for helping me out. 'I'm happy to be on the podium and of course I wanted to win, but you can't win them all.' Todd won thee Senior race by two-tenths-of-a-second from Harrison, with Dunlop 16.4s in arrears in third. Dunlop later won the second Supersport race on his Milwaukee Ducati for his 26th Southern 100 victory. The Ballymoney man had finished third in the first race behind Mike Browne and Todd, but Dunlop turned the tables to wrap up his only win at this year's 70th anniversary event. Dunlop was locked in battle with Todd as the duo shattered the lap record to set up a grandstand finish. Todd (Milenco by Padgett's Honda) tried all he could to get past, but Dunlop defended his lines and won by 0.176s. Browne was almost seven seconds back in third on the Russell Racing Yamaha. 'I had far better pace in that race,' Dunlop said. 'I'm not sure who had the fastest lap but I knew me and Davey were close. 'I knew he would try and slipstream me the whole way but I was just very scrappy on that last lap because I was trying to keep things tight.' Yorkshireman Jamie Coward finished fourth ahead of Rob Hodson (Yamaha) and Joe Yeardsley ( Yamaha). Wigan's Hodson made it a double in the Lightweight class on the SMT Paton after Todd ran into problems with the front brake on Clive Padgett's Paton. Todd dropped back but rallied to claim the runner-up spot, with Michael Sweeney holding off Paul Jordan for third. Veteran Irish road racer Paul Cranston was back on the rostrum in the Supersport B race, finishing second behind newcomer John Marsh. Dungannon's Cranston won the first race on Wednesday, 43 years after his last win at the Billown course. Dennis Booth from Kells finished third yesterday behind Marsh and Cranston. Isle of Man TT double winners Ryan and Callum Crowe were victorious in the Sidecar Championship race with a new lap record at over 103mph as they brought the curtain down on the 2025 meeting.
