Ahmad Zahid: Maori Community Can Be A Model For Orang Asli Tourism, Socio-economic Development

ROTORUA (New Zealand), July 15 (Bernama) -- The success of the Maori community, in transforming their village into a world-class tourism destination, presents an opportunity for Malaysia to adopt a similar model in developing Orang Asli settlements.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who visited the traditional Maori village in Rotorua, said that he saw strong potential in the approach, and believed that its concepts could be adapted for implementation in Malaysia.
'Insya-Allah, there will be an area in Melaka designated as an international-class tourism centre for the Orang Asli community," he said at a press conference after attending a round table session with Maori business leaders, here, today.
Ahmad Zahid is currently on a five-day working visit to New Zealand. On the second day of his visit, he travelled to Rotorua - a cultural and geothermal tourism hub, located about three hours from Auckland.
Commenting further, Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said that he had received approval from the relevant Melaka state executive councillor responsible for Orang Asli affairs, to move forward with the initiative.
He said that the government's inclusive approach toward minority communities, including the Orang Asli, reflects the MADANI government's commitment to ensuring that no group is left behind in the nation's development.
He added that the New Zealand government continues to prioritise the welfare of its indigenous communities, even though about 70 per cent of the population now has Maori heritage, through intermarriage and other factors.
'Although JAKOA (Department for Orang Asli Development) manages the Orang Asli as a minority group, the MADANI government continues to give them due attention and priority,' he said.

Countries and regions such as Switzerland and India, which accounted for more than three per cent of the US trade deficit in 2024 but have not yet received official notices, remain in negotiation with Washington. Trump sent mixed messages Wednesday on US-India trade talks, first stating "we have another (deal) coming up," then later asserting "we're very close to a deal." Regarding Japan, Trump said negotiations are underway but expressed doubt about the outcome.

Relocation Talks with Affected Desa Pandan Traders To Resume Soon
KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 (Bernama) – A follow-up engagement session with traders affected by the infrastructure upgrade project in Desa Pandan will be held soon, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa. She said the session involving her ministry and the nine traders would discuss the relocation of those impacted by the upgrade works in the area. 'Insya-Allah, we will meet them again this month to discuss suitable relocation options, as this is part of the 'Lestari Niaga' initiative currently being implemented in Kuala Lumpur. 'Some have agreed, but there are still a few who have not. Therefore, this upcoming session is important to reach a mutual agreement and expedite the road-widening project there, which is crucial for public use,' she said. Dr Zaliha was speaking to reporters after officiating the Launch Ceremony of the Federal Territories-level 2025 Climate Change and Green Energy Leadership Project (IKLIM) here today. Dr Zaliha said prior engagement sessions had been held since November 2024 and continued in January this year, including the issuance of vacancy notices for the affected area. She also instructed the Federal Territories Department (JWP) and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to meet with the traders promptly and provide them with relocation options. 'So I believe they need not worry about this matter. We will assist them by ensuring they have the necessary facilities to continue doing business,' she said. Previously, DBKL stated that demolition works at Jalan 2/76, Desa Pandan, scheduled for two days ago (July 15), had to be postponed following a commotion at the site.
