The car was driving on the wrong side of the road when it clipped a silver Toyota Corolla before colliding head-on with a Mercedes SUV.
The 43-year-old male driver of the Mercedes and his passengers – a 67-year-old woman, 42-year-old woman, nine-year-old girl and 12-year-old boy – miraculously walked away from the crash.
They were all taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital with minor injuries.
The Corolla driver, a 26-year-old woman, and two other drivers of vehicles caught up in the crash, another 26-year-old woman and a 65-year-old man, were not injured.
Kings St business owner Mohamed Zahour said the crash sounded like a bomb going off.
'When we came out we found like four to five cars had crashed,' he told 7NEWS.
'(The driver) thought he was on a highway.'
The MG driver, a 28-year-old man, was treated by paramedics before he was taken to St Vincent's Hospital for mandatory testing.
He was later charged with drive in a manner dangerous and had his licence suspended.
The man was issued a court attendance notice to appear at Newtown Local Court in August.
His passenger, a 20-year-old man, was arrested at the scene after he allegedly attempted to interfere in the police investigation and assaulted a female police officer and paramedics.
The man was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital where he allegedly assaulted a male police officer and security staff while under police guard.
On Monday, he was released from the hospital and taken to a police station where he was charged with three offences relating to the assaults and investigation interference.
He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court on Tuesday.

Reagan Chown sentenced over manslaughter of WA police officer Anthony Woods

A drug-affected car thief who ran over and killed a young policeman while trying to escape arrest will spend more than a decade in prison. Reagan Ainslie Chown, 25, was convicted of manslaughter over the late-night June 8, 2023 incident that led to Constable Anthony Woods' death in Perth. He was sentenced in the Western Australian Supreme Court on Thursday to a head sentence of 15 years and six months, and a minimum term of 13 years and six months. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today Woods' mother Natalie said her heart was 'ripped' away the day her son died. 'My beautiful son Anthony was so full of life, energy and ambition,' she said in a victim impact statement to the court. 'He was doing his duty and he was protecting his community and his future was taken away.' Woods said her family continued to suffer and 'each anniversary, birthday and any moment we shared with him is now painful for us'. 'Whatever he did, he had a great passion ... he was larger than life, but his love for his family was number one,' she said. Chown and two others fled from police in a stolen Holden Cruz in a high-speed chase before turning into a cul-de-sac and coming to a stop. Woods, 28, opened the driver's door and tried to detain Chown, who was behind the steering wheel with the engine running. Chown put the car into reverse and accelerated in a bid to escape. The officer fired his Taser into the moving car before falling and being dragged under the vehicle, where he became trapped. CCTV footage played during the trial in May showed the Holden reversing at speed, mounting a kerb and stopping after it hit a bollard. During the video, Constable Woods can be heard twice saying 'stay where you are' and 'Taser' as the vehicle moved backwards. The officer died several days after the incident from complications of cardiac arrest caused by mechanical compression of the chest and abdomen. Chown was under the influence of methamphetamine and in possession of the drug when the incident happened. During his trial, he argued he was not responsible for the tragedy because the officer shot him with a Taser and it caused him to lose control of a stolen car. Justice Joseph McGrath said Chown intended to flee police and ignored the officer's lawful commands. 'Undoubtedly, the Taser caused you pain and discomfort, but your course of conduct was set and it was done consciously and deliberately,' he said. 'Even if you were not tasered, you would have reversed and that was your intention.' Woods, who had just passed his probation, was farewelled before about 2000 police officers, family, friends and dignitaries at Perth's Optus Stadium. Chown was initially accused of murder but the charge was downgraded to manslaughter a week before his trial. He was also convicted of stealing the car and reckless driving to escape police and was also sentenced for those offences.

‘Scary': AFL star Brandon Zerk-Thatcher and his girlfriend flee home after fire at Glenelg East

AFL star Brandon Zerk-Thatcher and his girlfriend have been forced to flee from their home in the middle of the night after a 'suspicious' fire broke out nearby. Police and fire crews were called to the home on Brighton Rd at Glenelg East just after 2am on Thursday, after reports of a car on fire in a driveway. 'On arrival, patrols found the Audi sedan was fully alight with the fire having spread to a nearby home,' SA Police said. The Port Adelaide defender was in a nearby house when he was woken by his girlfriend, 7News reported. The pair grabbed their two kittens and quickly fled. 'I got woken up to my partner waking me up, there were a few loud bangs, she said there was a fire … looked out the window and sure enough the neighbour's car was on fire,' he told 7News. 'It was pretty quick - by the time we opened the door it just got to our house, so we got our cats and ran out of there. '(It) was lucky we got out - we just watched from across the road hoping the fire brigade would get here.' Mr Zerk-Thatcher claimed a jerrycan had been left at the scene and described the fire as 'a bit suspicious'. 'It was pretty scary, definitely makes you question if it's safe to live here,' he said. 'You don't expect anything like that to happen.' Incredible images from the scene showed a burnt-out Audi sedan, surrounded by ash. SA Police said no one was injured in the incident. Crime Scene Investigators attended the scene to conduct an investigation. 'The fire is being treated as suspicious, after witnesses reported seeing people running from the scene shortly after the fire started,' SA Police said.

Melbourne Teens' 28-Hour Crime Spree: 20 Armed Robberies

Don't miss out on the headlines from Victoria. Followed categories will be added to My News. Teenagers armed with knives, a hammer and a baseball bat targeted 20 petrol stations and bottle shops in just over 24 hours before their arrests. Police allege their stolen luxury Mercedes was used to steal smokes, booze and cash before they dumped their wheels at Pakenham on Thursday morning. The crew began their extraordinary alleged crime crusade in the city's west where they are accused of storming a tobacconist on Shaws Rd in Werribee before 10pm Tuesday. The three male offenders were allegedly armed with a knife during that ordeal. Five minutes later, the crew, allegedly armed with a knife and baseball bat, are accused of targeting a nearby convenience store before fleeing in the Mercedes. The group of offenders allegedly went on to target a fast food restaurant and service station in Truganina. They were seen wearing ski masks while armed with weapons late on Tuesday night. They then struck service stations in Laverton North, Williams Landing, Oakleigh, Nunawading and two at Bentleigh East. Police believe the same crew in the same stolen Mercedes went again on Wednesday night. Detectives say it was seen during another five armed robberies at petrol stations in Doncaster East, Mount Waverley, Clarinda, Clayton South and Braeside. The teenagers are accused of hitting those service stations between 1am and 2.15am on Thursday morning. Their car had also been spotted at another separate six armed robberies at bottle shops and restaurants earlier in the evening. No one was injured during the 28-hour crime spree but significant damage was done to several stores. Their extraordinary alleged offending was ground to a halt after they dumped the Mercedes at Olivia Court in Pakenham just after 6am. Two boys, aged 15 and 17 from Melbourne's southeast, were arrested and are being quizzed. An alleged accomplice fled the scene.
