Tindig Pilipinas blasts ‘cowardly' Senate for impeachment trial delay
The senators are being cowardly in their hesitation to convene as a court for the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, a coalition of pro-democracy groups said on Wednesday.
Talo ang lahat dahil dito,' Tindig Pilipinas said in a statement, after Senate President Francis "Chiz" Escudero said the impeachment trial is up to discretion of the senators via a plenary vote, even though the Constitution provides that the Senate impeachment trial 'should forthwith proceed' once a verified complaint or resolution of impeachment is filed by at least one-third of all the members of the House.
(The endless delay is a clear sign that many of our senators are too cowardly to make a stand and are derelict in their duty. We are all on the losing end here.)
The Tindig Pilipinas coalition, composed of groups including the Akbayan party-list, the ML party-list, the Magdalo party-list, the Buhay ang People Power Campaign Network, and the Student Council Alliance of the Philippines, said that Duterte herself also loses in the delay.
(It is a loss for the accused who is deprived of the opportunity to clear her name, and it is a loss for the victims of corruption who are being denied their shot at justice.)
The House impeached the Vice President on February 5, accusing her of betrayal of public trust; culpable violation of the Constitution; graft and corruption; and other high crimes, mainly over the alleged misuse of around P612.5 million worth of confidential funds, as well as declaring that she had arranged for President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos, Jr., his wife Liza and Speaker Martin Romualdez to be assassinated if she were killed.
(The Senate's leadership of discarding the Constitution, public funds, and the value of every Filipino's life is just as clear as the Vice President's crimes.)
The Filipino people, the group said, deserves to see the evidence against the Vice President, who received her mandate to serve from them.
(What we are simply asking is for them to let the evidence be presented because once that is done, it will prove that the Vice President is guilty of corruption, that she wasted DepEd's money amid the education crisis, and that she issued violent threats, including killing.)
(It is up to the senators' conscience if these acts are right or wrong. Anyway, the people at the losing end will come back to haunt them. The lesson we learned in the last elections is that voters do not tolerate public officials who don't stand up for anything. So that is why our call is for the Senate to start the trial. The evidence is strong. Put Sara on trial.)
Escudero said on Wednesday that the House cannot dictate on the Senate. He also denied protecting the Vice President. — BM, GMA Integrated News

Labor groups 'worried' about Marcos' statement on wage hike
Labor groups on Friday expressed concerns over President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr.'s statement about reviewing the proposed hike in minimum wage for workers. Lawyer Sonny Matula of the Federation of Free Workers emphasized that the bill granting a P200 increase on the daily minimum wage has already undergone scrutiny by lawmakers. (We are concerned about it being subjected to a review and the Palace seeking the opinion of the wage boards. This bill has gone through debates in the House and Senate.) (The wage board is not the Court of Appeals which should be consulted over a bill already passed by Congress.) The statement comes after Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro said that Marcos will look into the economic implications of the proposed increase. 'We will look at the economic implications of this and how to resolve this with the opinion of the wage boards since the wage boards are also the creations of the Congress,''' Castro said. Matula, however, urged Marcos to support the bill. "Dapat ay aprobahan na [ang wage hike] sapagkat matagal na itong kinakailangan," he said. (This should be approved as soon as possible because the public needs it badly.) (It would be an insult to the House and Senate members if they still had to consult the regional wage boards.) GMA News Online has reached out to the Palace for comment, but it has yet to reply as of posting time. Long overdue Jerome Adonis of Kilusang Mayo Uno backed Matula's call and also emphasized that a wage increase has been "long overdue." 'The labor sector has long fought for the P200 wage hike for minimum wage earners, and this is even small compared with the family living wage. Even so, we welcome this increase because this is long overdue. The Senate even passed its version way back in 2024,' Adonis said. (This has already been debated in the House, Senate, and both sides have already put forward their points. It has been proven that this is doable, and the proposed amounts are even lower than what is ideal, so the President has no reason not to sign it.) The House version of the wage hike measure is P200 per day, a higher amount compared to the Senate version, which is just pegged at P100. The House and the Senate will have to reconcile their differing versions and ratify the reconciled version before the 19th Congress ends on June 13 for the bill to be ready for the President's signature. Veto? Senator Joel Villanueva on Thursday expressed concern regarding the House of Representatives' approval of the bill and said that it might only get vetoed if adopted by the Senate. (I think that it may be directly vetoed by the President. That's what we also need to look at if we are going to adopt that because some House members may just use that to ensure that the bill will get vetoed.) Adonis, however, believes that this should not be a hindrance. (So even if the bill has different versions, this should not be a hurdle, and Congress should immediately decide on the final amount and send it to the President for signature. They should not make the workers wait even longer because they have been waiting for this for 36 years.) —VAL, GMA Integrated News

Japan diet OKs defense pact with PH —envoy
Japan's Diet on Friday ratified a key defense pact allowing the deployment of Japanese forces for joint drills with Filipino troops in the Philippines, Manila's top envoy to Tokyo said. "We welcome today's approval of the Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA) between the Philippines and Japan by the House of Councillors, which completes the approval process in the Japanese Diet," Philippine Ambassador Mylene Garcia-Albano said in a statement sent to GMA News Online. The RAA, which similarly allows Filipino soldiers to enter Japan for joint combat drills, was approved by the Philippine Senate on December 2024 Garcia-Albano said the RAA is "a testament to the trust and enduring friendship between the Philippines and Japan." "It will enhance our ability to work closely together in promoting a rules-based order governed by international law," she said. Japan and the Philippines are establishing closer security ties in reaction to China's aggressive territorial assertions. China and Japan are also locked in a long-running territorial dispute over the Senkaku islands, which the Chinese call Diaoyu, in the East Sea. A vital trading and shipping lane, the South China Sea, dotted with rocks, shoals, and reefs where rich oil and mineral deposits were found, are claimed in part or in whole by the Philippines, China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan. Manila largely won a landmark case against China's massive claim in the South China Sea before an arbitration tribunal in The Hague, Netherlands, but Beijing does not recognize the ruling. Similar to Manila's Visiting Forces Agreement with its treaty ally, the United States, the RAA defense pact with the Philippines is the first to be signed by Japan in Asia. Japan signed similar agreements with Australia and the United Kingdom. "We thank the Government and people of Japan for their steadfast support and continued collaboration," Garcia-Albano said. "We look forward to the full implementation of this agreement and to building an even more resilient and forward-looking partnership in the years ahead." —AOL, GMA Integrated News

VP Sara: Eid'l Adha a reminder for compassion, courage
Vice President Sara Duterte on Friday expressed hope that the spirit of Eid'l Adha would serve as a reminder to Filipinos of the essence of courage, generosity, and compassion for others. In a video message, Duterte greeted the Muslim community for the celebration, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice. (May this occasion serve as a reminder to all of us of the meaning of sacrifice, faith, and generosity—values that are important not only in our faith but also in our daily lives.) (The spirit of Eid al-Adha serves as a reminder of courage, generosity, and compassion—qualities that are very important at this time.) Eid'I Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice, is a major holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide for three to four days with most of them attending the special prayers at major mosques and Islamic centers throughout the world. It is considered the second of two great Muslim festivals, the first being Eid'l Fitr. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
