Record heatwave blasts northern Vietnam
While Vietnam experiences hot weather every year, scientists say human-driven climate change is causing more intense weather patterns, including higher temperatures.
The normally bustling streets of Hanoi were quieter on Tuesday as locals hid from the burning heat.
Flower seller Ngo Thu Thuy told AFP of her exhaustion from riding her flower bike in the heat.
"I earn less as no one bothers to buy flowers in this heat. I still have to try my best to earn my living" said Thuy, 38, covered from head to toe to protect herself from the sun.
A construction worker who identified himself as Nam said "too many buildings and vehicles" has turned Hanoi into "a pan on fire" over the past two days.
Records set in past heatwaves in 2021 and 2024 were broken at 17 weather stations around the north, though rain forecast for Tuesday evening is expected to bring cooler temperatures.
One weather station in downtown Hanoi recorded a high of 40.3C, beating the city's previous August record of 39.8C set in 2021.
Outside Hanoi, stations in the provinces of Phu Tho, Tuyen Quang, Lang Son, Bac Ninh, Haiphong and Ninh Binh all reported record August highs.
"The air humidity in Hanoi and the delta area on Monday was only up to 52 percent, causing a distinct feeling of dryness and heat," Vietnam's top weather forecaster Nguyen Van Huong said in a statement released by the ministry of agriculture and environment.
Vietnam's electricity company EVN said consumption in Hanoi hit an all-time record at 1:28 pm (0628 GMT) on Monday as residents sought to cool off with fans and air-conditioning.
"I cannot imagine spending the night without air conditioning over the past few days," office worker Dang Xuan Huong told AFP.
"It's so strange that we are in August and it is still burning hot", Huong said.
But relief could be on the way -- rain forecast for Tuesday night is expected to bring temperatures down.

Pacific microstate sells first passports to fund climate action
Pacific microstate Nauru, one of the world's smallest nations, has a novel plan to fund its fight against climate change by selling so-called "golden passports". Selling for US$105,000 each, Nauru plans to drum up more than US$5 million in the first year of the "climate resilience citizenship" programme. Almost six months after the scheme opened in February, Nauru has so far approved just six applications -- covering two families and four individuals. Despite the slow start -- Nauru eventually hopes to sell 66 passports in the scheme's first year -- President David Adeang remained upbeat. "We welcome our new citizens whose investment will assist Nauru to secure a sustainable and prosperous future for generations to come," he told AFP on Thursday. Nauru believes the passport programme could eventually generate $43 million -– or about 500 successful applicants -- which would account for almost 20 percent of total government revenue. But there are fears the scheme could be ripe for exploitation. Edward Clark, who runs Nauru's climate passport programme, said one application has already been withdrawn after officials flagged "adverse findings" during background checks. "The application would have been rejected had it not been withdrawn," he told AFP. A previous Nauru attempt to sell passports ended in disaster. In 2003, Nauru officials sold citizenship to Al-Qaeda members who were later arrested in Asia. Among the first batch of climate passports approved was an unnamed German family of four living in Dubai, said Clark touting the "major milestone". 'Political volatility' "They were looking for a second citizenship to provide them with a Plan B given the current global political volatility." The Nauru passport provides visa-free entry into 89 countries, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong. More than 60 different nations offer some form of migration for investment schemes, Australia's Lowy Institute has found. Pacific nations such as Vanuatu, Samoa and Tonga have all dabbled in selling passports. The island republic of Nauru sits on a small plateau of phosphate rock in the sparsely populated South Pacific. With a total landmass of just 21 square kilometres (eight square miles), it is one of the world's smallest nations. Unusually pure phosphate deposits -- a key ingredient in fertiliser -- once made Nauru one of the wealthiest places, per capita, on the planet. But these supplies have long dried up, and researchers today estimate 80 percent of Nauru has been rendered uninhabitable by mining. What little land Nauru has left is threatened by encroaching tides. Scientists have measured sea levels rising 1.5 times faster than global averages. Nauru will eventually need to relocate 90 percent of its population as creeping seas start to eat away at its coastal fringe. The first phase of this mass relocation is estimated to cost more than $60 million.

Trump says Putin-Witkoff talks 'highly productive' but sanctions still due
President Donald Trump on Wednesday, August 6 hailed talks between his envoy and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Ukraine as "highly productive," but US officials said sanctions would still be imposed on Moscow's trading partners. Trump, who had boasted he could end the conflict within 24 hours of taking office, has given Russia until Friday to make progress towards peace or face new penalties. US envoy Steve Witkoff met with Putin for what the Kremlin said were "constructive" talks two days ahead of the US deadline for Russia. Trump said on his Truth Social platform that "great progress was made" during the meeting – but minutes later a senior US official said that "secondary sanctions" were still expected to be implemented on Friday. Three rounds of Russia-Ukraine talks in Istanbul have failed to make headway on a ceasefire, with the two sides far apart in their demands. Russia has escalated drone and missile attacks against its pro-Western neighbor to a record high and accelerated its advance on the ground. "A quite useful and constructive conversation took place," Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov told journalists, including AFP, after the three-hour meeting. Putin and Witkoff exchanged "signals" on their positions, Ushakov said, without elaborating. The Kremlin released a video of Putin shaking hands with Witkoff at the start of the meeting. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said later on Wednesday that he had spoken by phone with Trump after Witkoff visited Moscow. "European leaders were on the call, and I am grateful to each of them for their support," he added on social media, without saying which leaders took part in the call. Sanctions threat The White House has not officially outlined what action it would take against Russia, but Trump has previously threatened to impose "secondary tariffs" targeting Russia's key trade partners, such as China and India. On Wednesday, Trump ordered steeper tariffs on Indian goods over New Delhi's continued purchase of Russian oil. Video compilation misrepresents old, unrelated clips as Wyoming hailstorm
"August 1, 2025 Baseball size hail hammers south side of Cheyenne, WY," says text over an August 3, 2025 TikTok video viewed more than 3.5 million times. Image Screenshot from TikTok taken August 4, 2025 Similar posts spread in English and Spanish and across TikTok and other platforms, including Facebook and X, with some users invoking conspiracy theories about weather modification. "This isn't 'just weather' anymore..." says one post on X. "#WeWantAnswers." The posts follow extreme weather in Cheyenne that, according to local news outlets and the National Weather Service (NWS), included severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings. NWS local storm reports say the city saw hail as big as tennis balls (archived here). But the dramatic video footage in the compilation is unrelated to the August 1 hailstorm. AFP could not verify the origin of two of the 14 clips in the montage. But the other 12 are all outdated and recorded outside Wyoming, AFP determined using reverse image searches, keyword searches and geolocation.
