Odisha man wanted in rape of two girls, murder of woman arrested from Karnataka

News182 days ago
Berhampur: Aug 19 (PTI) A man who had been absconding for six years in connection with the alleged rape of two minor girls in Odisha's Balasore district was arrested from Karnataka for his involvement in a recent murder in the city, police said on Tuesday.
The accused, who had been living under the alias Sunil Swain, was identified as Santanu Patra (29) of Srijanga village in Balasore district.
He was arrested by Berhampur police with help from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) at Wadi station in Karnataka, and was produced before a local court on August 16.
He was brought to Berhampur on Monday night on transit remand.
Police said Patra murdered 31-year-old Gayatri Swain, a married woman, and injuring her 11-year-old daughter at their residence in Sreema Nagar under Nimakhandi police station limits on the night of August 10.
'After committing the murder, the accused locked the door from outside and fled. He was identified with the help of CCTV footage," said Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M.
He then fled to Mumbai and assumed a new identity as Sunil Swain.
He befriended Gayatri on Facebook in 2019. However, their relationship did not work out and a misunderstanding led him to feel 'humiliated," prompting him to allegedly plan the murder.
After a heated argument, he allegedly slit Gayatri's throat with a sharp weapon and also attacked her minor daughter on August 10. The deceased's husband was not at home as he works in Bhubaneswar, the SP said. PTI COR BBM BBM MNB

Autopsy Rules Out Trauma Or Foul Play In Death Of French Streamer Who Died On Air

Last Updated: The initial autopsy results show 'no internal or external traumatic injuries' or burns on the body, with only minor bruises and healed lesions observed A post-mortem examination has ruled out trauma or third-party involvement in the death of French streamer Raphael Graven, who passed away during a live broadcast earlier this week. Graven, 46, known online as 'Jean Pormanove" or simply 'JP", died on Monday in the village of Contes near Nice. He was found unresponsive at home shortly after ending a livestream on the platform Kick. According to Nice prosecutor Damien Martinelli, the initial autopsy results show 'no internal or external traumatic injuries" or burns on the body, with only minor bruises and healed lesions observed. 'The probable causes of death appear to be medical and/or toxicological," he said, adding that more tests have been ordered. Footage from the livestream showed Graven lying under a sheet while another man threw a plastic bottle at him. Despite the disturbing nature of the scene, prosecutors confirmed there were no signs of violence or assault. 'The medical experts consider that Mr Graven's death was not traumatic in origin and was not related to the intervention of a third party," Martinelli said. Authorities said Graven had a history of heart problems and was receiving treatment for a thyroid condition, which could have played a role in his sudden death. Kick has suspended all co-streamers involved in the broadcast pending the results of the investigation. The company also announced a full review of its French content policies. Stray dogs row: SC to deliver order on Aug 22

Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 21 (PTI) The Supreme Court is set to pronounce on August 22 the order on a plea to stay its August 11 direction to permanently relocate stray dogs from streets to dog shelters in Delhi-NCR. A three-judge special bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and N V Anjaria had on August 14 reserved its order in the matter. A two-judge bench of the apex court had on August 11 passed a slew of directions, including ordering the authorities in Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) to start picking up stray dogs from all localities 'at the earliest" and relocate the canines to dog shelters. The bench passed the order in a suo motu case initiated on July 28 over a media report on stray dog bites leading to rabies, particularly among children, in the national capital. Widespread protests were reported across the country following the apex court's August 11 order. Later, the matter came up for hearing on August 14 before a three-judge special bench which said the 'whole problem" of stray dogs in Delhi-NCR was a result of the 'inaction" of local authorities which did 'nothing" in implementing the Animal Birth Control Rules on sterilisation and immunisation of canines. The special bench, which was constituted to hear the suo motu case and some other pleas concerning stray dogs, had reserved its verdict on the interim prayer for a stay on certain directions issued on August 11. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Delhi government, had referred to data and said in 2024, India reported around 37.15 lakh dog bites cases — nearly 10,000 per day. Mehta had also referred to a media report and said the World Health Organisation, using government and other authentic sources, reported 305 dog-bite related deaths last year. The lawyers appearing for several organisations had urged the special bench to stay some of the directions passed by the two-judge bench. On August 11, a bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and R Mahadevan had directed the authorities in Delhi-NCR to start relocating all stray dogs from streets to shelters and asked the authorities to initially start by creating a shelter to house 5,000 dogs. It had warned of strictest action against those who obstructed the exercise and directed immediate creation of dog shelters or pounds and report about it within eight weeks. 'Leave Me Alone, I Am Not Helpless': Missing US Woman Resurfaces With Tribe In Scotland

Last Updated: Kaura Taylor, missing from Texas, was found with the Kingdom of Kubala in Jedburgh, Scotland. A woman from Texas who was previously reported missing has been found living with an off-grid community in the forests of Jedburgh, Scotland, according to UK-based media outlet SWNS. The woman, identified as Kaura Taylor, has taken the name Asnat within the group, which calls itself the 'Kingdom of Kubala." The community is led by Kofi Offeh, who goes by King Atehene and his wife Jean Gasho, known as Queen Nandi. They claim to be reclaiming ancestral land allegedly taken from their forebears more than 400 years ago. In a video message addressed to UK authorities, Kaura Taylor insisted she was living with the group by choice, saying, 'To the UK authorities, obviously I am not missing. Leave me alone. I am an adult, not a helpless child." The Kingdom of Kubala, which says it descends from the biblical King David, lives off-grid in tents, relying on natural resources and what they describe as divine law rather than local regulations. Members say they bathe in springwater, live without walls and rely on God-whom they call Yahowah- for food and protection. King Atehene told SWNS, 'We live a very simple life of returning to innocence. We connect to nature, to the trees around us. We are living a simple life of relying daily on the creator for food, shelter and clothing. We live in a tent without walls, but we are not afraid of anyone, for we have the protection of the creator, Yahowah." The group has faced eviction notices from local authorities and claims to have been the target of harassment, including an incident in which one of their tents was set on fire. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
