UK court orders singer Chris Brown held in custody over 2023 London nightclub fight charge

CNN16-05-2025

Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown's upcoming tour was thrown into question Friday as a British judge ordered him held in custody while facing allegations that he beat a music producer with a bottle in a London nightclub in 2023.
Brown, 36, appeared in Manchester Magistrates' Court to face one count of causing grievous bodily harm and was ordered held until his next hearing June 13 in London – the same day he's due to take the stage in Frankfurt, Germany, on the third date of his world tour.
Judge Joanne Hirst rejected Brown's bail request after prosecutor Hannah Nicholls said that the crime was 'extremely serious.'
Brown was on tour in the UK in February 2023 when he is alleged to have attacked producer Abe Diaw with a bottle at the Tape nightclub, in London's Mayfair neighborhood.
Defense attorney Grace Forbes argued that the American performer wasn't a flight risk and should be released.
Brown was flanked by court officers in the dock. His hair was bleached blonde and he wore sweatpants and a black T-shirt. He confirmed his name and birth date, and said that his address was the local Lowry Hotel, where he was arrested early Thursday and taken into custody.
His case was transferred to Southwark Crown Court in London, where he is expected to enter a plea to the charge.
Brown's representative didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press.
Brown, often called by his nickname Breezy, burst onto the music scene as a teen in 2005 and has become a major hitmaker over the years with notable songs such as 'Run It,' 'Kiss Kiss' and 'Without You.'
He won his first Grammy for best R&B album in 2011 for 'F.A.M.E.' and then earned his second gold trophy in the same category for '11:11 (Deluxe)' earlier this year.
The singer is due to launch an international tour next month with artists Jhene Aiko, Summer Walker and Bryson Tiller, opening with a European leg on June 8 in Amsterdam before starting North America shows in July.

King and Duchess of Edinburgh visit Royal Windsor Flower Show

The King has visited the Royal Windsor Flower Show, which this year is inspired by an idea from his book. Charles, who has a passion for gardening, stopped to smell the flowers during his visit to the show which is billed as 'a joyful one-day celebration of gardening, nature, food and traditional crafts'. Gardener Alan Titchmarsh, who is the honorary president of the Royal Windsor Rose & Horticultural Society, helped to welcome the royal party including the Duchess of Edinburgh who officially opened the event. The theme for this year's show, held at the York Club in Windsor Great Park, is Patterns in Nature' inspired by Charles's 2010 book called Harmony: A New Way Of Looking At Our World. The King's Foundation explains Charles's philosophy of harmony is aimed at understanding 'the balance, order and relationships between ourselves and the natural world' to 'create a more sustainable future'. It adds: 'The Harmony philosophy sees everything in nature as interconnected, including ourselves. 'This means taking a holistic approach to the challenges facing our planet, and looking to solve these challenges by working with nature, rather than against her.' Apart from looking at the displays Charles smiled and shook hands with members of the public and Sophie chatted with Chelsea pensioners. There were also expert talks, demonstrations and hands-on workshops on offer for those who attended. Saturday was the 118th edition of the show, which has Charles as its patron.

R. Kelly Earns New Platinum Awards While Incarcerated

R. Kelly earns a new RIAA awards while in prison via Chris Brown's 'Back to Sleep' remix, which ... More seems to now stand as his most-certified track ever. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - MAY 07: Singer R. Kelly leaves the Leighton Courthouse following his status hearing, in relation to the sex abuse allegations made against him, on May 07, 2019 in Chicago, Illinois. (Photo by) R. Kelly's music career is all but over. The former chart-topper is currently incarcerated and likely will remain behind bars for decades. The singer-songwriter and producer is serving a 30-plus-year sentence in North Carolina after being convicted of multiple crimes, including those related to child pornography and racketeering. He was dropped from his record label years ago and hasn't released any new material in a long time. Still, people are listening, and the controversial musician has just picked up a new major award. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) recently certified dozens of songs by fellow musician Chris Brown in a sweeping move that added millions of additional certified units to his growing total. Among the tracks affected is "Back to Sleep." Several remixes of the 2015 single were released when Brown was promoting it years ago, including ones featuring Usher, Zayn, Miguel, Trey Songz—and Kelly himself. The remix featuring Kelly, along with Tank and Anthony Hamilton, is the one that just earned a new plaque from the RIAA. That track may now be Kelly's biggest win when it comes to certifications. "Back to Sleep" was named a gold and then platinum hit in October 2017, and it reached double platinum status in 2019. It has now doubled again, with the RIAA certifying it for shifting 4 million equivalent units between sales and streaming activity. It appears that "Back to Sleep" may now be Kelly's most-certified single, according to the RIAA. It marks his first new certification in years, as the last time the organization awarded one of his own tracks was back in 2007, though it's possible that some collaborations, like 'Back to Sleep,' may have been named without officially appearing in his total. None of his most recognizable tunes, including "I Believe I Can Fly," "Bump n' Grind," or "You Remind Me of Something," have advanced past platinum status. More than 20 of Brown's singles either earned their first certifications or moved up on Friday (June 6), when the RIAA unveiled dozens of new awards. Two cuts — "Loyal" featuring Tyga and Lil Wayne, and "Forever" — moved up to eight-times platinum status, and both may soon become diamond-certified hits. Brown already claims two of those coveted prizes, including "Look at Me Now" alongside Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes, which became his second diamond smash just last month. It joined "No Guidance" with Drake in that rare club.
