Church dismisses claims Pope Leo XIV failed to act on abuse cases in Chiclayo, says he ‘respected procedures'
CHICLAYO (Peru), May 10 — Pope Leo XIV's successor as bishop of Chiclayo in northern Peru yesterday rejected allegations that the new pontiff ever covered up cases of sexual abuse within the diocese.
Chiclayo bishop Edison Farfan told reporters that Leo had 'listened (to the victims) and respected the procedures' of the Church.
The new pope had been 'the most sensitive of all within the Peruvian church' to the issue of sexual abuse, Farfan added.
The US-born pontiff was bishop of the coastal city from 2015 to 2023, when he was made a cardinal and moved to Rome.
Two victim advocacy groups questioned Leo XIV's commitment to addressing sexual violence in the church after he was announced Thursday.
Victims' rights group, Bishop Accountability, has also questioned the US-born pontiff's commitment to lifting the lid on the scourge of clerical abuse.
The group's co-director Anne Barrett Doyle noted that Leo had 'released no names' of abusers, whether as head of the Augustinian order, bishop of Chiclayo or most recently, as head of the powerful Dicastery for Bishops, advising his predecessor Francis on the appointment of bishops.
She labelled his alleged inaction in Chiclayo, where she said two priests had been accused of sexual abuse, as 'most disturbing.'
The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), also issued a statement after his election as pope calling on Leo XIV to take action to support victims of sexual violence.
In 2022, a priest in the diocese was accused of having sexually assaulted at least three girls.
The diocese's head of communications, Fiel Purizaca, told AFP that the priest targeted by the abuse allegations was 'immediately sent home.'
Farfan said the allegations were an attempt to 'discredit' the new pontiff and were 'false.' Farfan said the church was still investigating the abuse claims. — AFP

In other images he appears slumped against the hood of a white car, smeared with blood, as a group of men try to hold him up. Media reported the suspected shooter was a teenager who had been arrested. Attorney general Luz Adriana Camargo told Caracol Radio that Uribe was in 'intensive care'. Local media reported that at least one bullet struck the senator in the neck or head. The government of leftist president Gustavo Petro said it 'categorically and forcefully' condemned the attack on Uribe during the campaign event in the west of the capital. 'This act of violence is an attack not only against his person, but also against democracy, freedom of thought, and the legitimate exercise of politics in Colombia,' the presidency said in the statement. Uribe, a strong critic of Petro, is a member of the Democratic Center party, who announced last October his intention to run in the 2026 presidential election. His party said in a statement Saturday that an 'armed individual' had shot the senator from behind. The attack 'not only endangers the life of a political leader, but also threatens democracy and freedom in Colombia,' it said. The party leader, Colombia's influential former president Alvaro Uribe, meanwhile described the shooting as an attack against 'a hope for the country'. Bogota mayor Carlos Galan said on X that 'the shooter has been captured'. Local media reported that a 15-year-old boy had been arrested and was suspected of pulling the trigger. Attorney General Camargo said she had seen those reports but that the information had yet to be verified. Miguel Uribe is a member of a family with a long political tradition in Colombia. One of his grandfathers was former Colombia president Julio Cesar Turbay, who led the country from 1978 to 1982. And his mother, Diana Turbay, was a renowned journalist who was kidnapped by the Medellin Cartel, led by the notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar, and who was killed in a failed military rescue operation in 1991. Uribe himself has been a senator since 2022. He previously served as Bogota's government secretary and city councilor. He also ran for city mayor in 2019, but lost that election. Defense minister Pedro Sanchez said on X that authorities were offering a reward of around US$700,000 for information leading to the capture of those behind Saturday's attack.

(AP pic) BOGOTA : A prominent Colombian right-wing presidential candidate is in critical condition after being shot three times during a campaign event in Bogota today, authorities said. Thirty-nine-year-old Senator Miguel Uribe was speaking to supporters in the capital when a gunman shot him twice in the head and once in the knee before being detained. Images from the scene showed Uribe slumped against the hood of a white car, smeared with blood, as a group of men tried to hold him and stop the bleeding. A security guard managed to detain the suspected attacker, a minor who is believed to be 15 years old. Uribe was airlifted to the hospital in 'critical condition', where he is undergoing a 'neurosurgical' and 'peripheral vascular procedure', the Santa Fe Clinic in Bogota confirmed. Uribe's wife posted on his X account that 'he is fighting for his life at this moment'. Police director Carlos Fernando Triana said the suspect was injured in the affray and was receiving treatment. Two others – a man and a woman – were also wounded, and a Glock-style firearm was seized. 'Our hearts are broken, Colombia hurts,' Carolina Gomez, a 41-year-old businesswoman, told AFP as she prayed with candles for Uribe's health. 'Day of pain' The motive for the attack is not yet publicly known. Colombia's defence minister Pedro Sanchez vowed to use law enforcement's full capabilities and offered a roughly US$725,000 reward for information about who was behind the shooting. Fake Pope sermons go viral, fuelling fears over AI misinformation
WASHINGTON, June 6 — AI-generated videos and audios of Pope Leo XIV are populating rapidly online, racking up views as platforms struggle to police them. An AFP investigation identified dozens of YouTube and TikTok pages that have been churning out AI-generated messages delivered in the pope's voice or otherwise attributed to him since he took charge of the Catholic Church last month. The hundreds of fabricated sermons and speeches, in English and Spanish, underscore how easily hoaxes created using artificial intelligence can elude detection and dupe viewers. 'There's natural interest in what the new pope has to say, and people don't yet know his stance and style,' said University of Washington professor emeritus Oren Etzioni, founder of a nonprofit focused on fighting deepfakes. 'A perfect opportunity to sow mischief with AI-generated misinformation.' After AFP presented YouTube with 26 channels posting predominantly AI-generated pope content, the platform terminated 16 of them for violating its policies against spam, deceptive practices and scams, and another for violating YouTube's terms of service. 'We terminated several channels flagged to us by AFP for violating our Spam policies and Terms of Service,' spokesperson Jack Malon said. The company also booted an additional six pages from its partner program allowing creators to monetize their content. TikTok similarly removed 11 accounts that AFP pointed out — with over 1.3 million combined followers — citing the platform's policies against impersonation, harmful misinformation and misleading AI-generated content of public figures. 'Chaotic uses' With names such as 'Pope Leo XIV Vision,' the social media pages portrayed the pontiff supposedly offering a flurry of warnings and lessons he never preached. But disclaimers annotating their use of AI were often hard to find — and sometimes non-existent. On YouTube, a label demarcating 'altered or synthetic content' is required for material that makes someone appear to say something they did not. But such disclosures only show up toward the bottom of each video's click-to-open description. A YouTube spokesperson said the company has since applied a more prominent label to some videos on the channels flagged by AFP that were not found to have violated the platform's guidelines. TikTok also requires creators to label posts sharing realistic AI-generated content, though several pope-centric videos went unmarked. A TikTok spokesperson said the company proactively removes policy-violating content and uses verified badges to signal authentic accounts. Brian Patrick Green, director of technology ethics at Santa Clara University, said the moderation difficulties are the result of rapid AI developments inspiring 'chaotic uses of the technology.' Many clips on the YouTube channels AFP identified amassed tens of thousands of views before being deactivated. On TikTok, one Spanish-language video received 9.6 million views while claiming to show Leo preaching about the value of supportive women. Another, which carried an AI label but still fooled viewers, was watched some 32.9 million times. No video on the pope's official Instagram page has more than 6 million views. Experts say even seemingly harmless fakes can be problematic especially if used to farm engagement for accounts that might later sell their audiences or pivot to other misinformation. The AI-generated sermons not only 'corrode the pope's moral authority' and 'make whatever he actually says less believable,' Green said, but could be harnessed 'to build up trust around your channel before having the pope say something outrageous or politically expedient.' The pope himself has also warned about the risks of AI, while Vatican News called out a deepfake that purported to show Leo praising Burkina Faso leader Ibrahim Traore, who seized power in a 2022 coup. AFP also debunked clips depicting the pope, who holds American and Peruvian citizenships, criticizing US Vice President JD Vance and Peru's President Dina Boluarte.
