Church dismisses claims Pope Leo XIV failed to act on abuse cases in Chiclayo, says he ‘respected procedures'
Chiclayo bishop Edison Farfan told reporters that Leo had 'listened (to the victims) and respected the procedures' of the Church.
The new pope had been 'the most sensitive of all within the Peruvian church' to the issue of sexual abuse, Farfan added.
The US-born pontiff was bishop of the coastal city from 2015 to 2023, when he was made a cardinal and moved to Rome.
Two victim advocacy groups questioned Leo XIV's commitment to addressing sexual violence in the church after he was announced Thursday.
Victims' rights group, Bishop Accountability, has also questioned the US-born pontiff's commitment to lifting the lid on the scourge of clerical abuse.
The group's co-director Anne Barrett Doyle noted that Leo had 'released no names' of abusers, whether as head of the Augustinian order, bishop of Chiclayo or most recently, as head of the powerful Dicastery for Bishops, advising his predecessor Francis on the appointment of bishops.
She labelled his alleged inaction in Chiclayo, where she said two priests had been accused of sexual abuse, as 'most disturbing.'
The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), also issued a statement after his election as pope calling on Leo XIV to take action to support victims of sexual violence.
In 2022, a priest in the diocese was accused of having sexually assaulted at least three girls.
The diocese's head of communications, Fiel Purizaca, told AFP that the priest targeted by the abuse allegations was 'immediately sent home.'
Farfan said the allegations were an attempt to 'discredit' the new pontiff and were 'false.' Farfan said the church was still investigating the abuse claims. — AFP

The Supreme Court statement said the ruling would be considered 'during extraordinary sessions on Sept 2, 3, 9, 10 and 12'. Thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed government buildings in Brasilia on Jan 8, 2023, a week after Lula's inauguration, alleging election fraud and calling on the military to intervene. Bolsonaro, who led the Latin American country from 2019 to 2022, has maintained his innocence, calling any coup 'abhorrent'. The prosecutor's office maintains that Bolsonaro led an 'armed criminal organization' that orchestrated the coup attempt and was to be its main beneficiary. The case file also focuses on meetings where draft decrees were allegedly presented, including those involving the possible imprisonment of officials such as Supreme Court judges. Colombian presidential hopeful in critical condition again

(EPA Images pic) BOGOTA : A Colombian presidential candidate shot at a campaign event in June has deteriorated to critical condition due to a new cerebral haemorrhage, doctors treating him said Saturday. Conservative senator Miguel Uribe, 39, was speaking to supporters in the capital, Bogota, when a gunman shot him twice in the head and once in the knee. He has been in intensive care since then and undergone multiple surgeries. In recent weeks his relatives had welcomed progress in his care. But now Uribe has been put back under deep sedation, the Santa Fe Foundation Hospital said in a statement. Uribe needs 'new neurosurgical procedures' after presenting with a haemorrhage in his central nervous system, the statement said. 'His condition is critical.' Authorities have arrested six suspects in the attack. They believe the 15-year-old shooter was a hired gun and that dissident members of the defunct FARC guerrilla group are behind the attack. The government of leftist President Gustavo Petro initiated peace talks with the dissident group in mid 2024 in Venezuela, but the talks made little progress and have since been suspended. Uribe was the favoured candidate of the right for the 2026 presidential elections. The attack in June stunned Colombia and raised fears of a return to the country's bloody past of political, cartel and paramilitary violence.

Colombian presidential hopeful dies after being shot in June

(AP pic) BOGOTA : Colombian presidential candidate Miguel Uribe has died two months after being shot in the head at a campaign event, his wife announced early this morning. 'You will always be the love of my life. Thank you for a life full of love,' Maria Claudia Tarazona wrote on her Instagram account. 'Rest in peace, love of my life. I will take care of our children,' she added. The legislator's condition had returned to critical after he suffered a new brain haemorrhage related to the assassination attempt, the clinic treating him said Saturday. On June 7, during a rally in a working-class neighbourhood of the capital Bogota, the 39-year-old conservative candidate was shot three times, twice in the head. Authorities have arrested six suspects linked to the attack, including a 15-year-old alleged to have carried out the shooting, and point to a dissident group of the defunct FARC guerrilla group as possible masterminds. By mid-July, Uribe was showing signs of improvement and had entered neuro-rehabilitation after several surgeries. Uribe leaves behind a young son and three teenage daughters of his wife, whom he had taken in as his own. 'Today is a sad day for the country,' Colombian vice-president Francia Marquez said today in a message on social media network X. 'Violence cannot continue to mark our destiny. Democracy is not built with bullets or blood, it is built with respect, with dialogue,' she added. A member of the Democratic Center party of former right-wing President Alvaro Uribe, to whom he is not related, he announced in October his intention to run in the May 2026 presidential election to succeed left-wing president Gustavo Petro. The attack revived fears of a return to the violence of the 1980s and 1990s in Colombia, when political murders and attacks were commonplace. US secretary of state Marco Rubio, a frequent critic of the leftist Petro government, demanded justice today following the announcement of Uribe's death. 'The United States stands in solidarity with his family, the Colombian people, both in mourning and demanding justice for those responsible,' Rubio wrote on X.
