Toilet shortage or deep state secrets? Why Musk really quit the government
Published May 30th, 2025 - 01:02 GMT
ALBAWABA - Few people in Washington realized how disruptive Elon Musk's term would be when he began his government campaign in February at the Conservative Political Action Conference, brandishing a chainsaw.
However, the billionaire businessman is leaving behind a complex legacy that includes thousands of layoffs, the dismantling of government agencies, and frequent conflicts with prominent figures in the Trump Administration as he prepares to leave his position as the most visible face behind the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) three months later. Additionally, Musk only cuts around $175 billion of government expenditure, falling well short of Washington's $1 trillion target.
Musk has already shown an intention in refocusing his attention on his enterprises, and his position working for President Donald Trump was always meant to be transitory. However, his departure—which was revealed late Wednesday on his social media platform, X—marks a dramatic shift for the federal government's ambitious cost-cutting agency, which he helped create.
Regarding his attempts to reduce federal expenditure, Musk stated, "The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government." He went on to say that because he is not allowed to work more than 130 days in a 365-day period while he is a special government employee, his "scheduled time" had ended.
Kevin O'Leary agrees with Elon Musk on auditing the government:
"Bringing the whole idea of a different kind of audit into the psyche of bipartisan taxpayers, DOGE is a good idea. It just is. Auditing the government under any administration is a good idea." pic.twitter.com/obAXvogPtt — Julia 🇺🇸 (@Jules31415) May 30, 2025
Here are some things to consider about DOGE's future in the absence of Musk. Several Cabinet chiefs vetoed Musk's proposal to require government workers to write brief emails outlining their weekly successes, which was just one of many ways his Silicon Valley upbringing conflicted with Washington customs.
Numerous instances of DOGE-led reforms that have probably reduced government efficiency have been brought to light by reporting by NPR and other publications. The removal of a GSA tech unit that contributed to bettering digital services across agencies, the promotion of a return-to-office campaign despite desk, internet, and even toilet paper shortages, spending freezes on government payment cards that hindered employees' ability to purchase necessities, and more are examples of this.
The emphasis of other cases has been on one area in which DOGE has had considerable success: gathering private government information and organizing it into enormous databases. Concerns have been expressed by a number of federal courts over DOGE's data access and its intended use. There are instances when it seems DOGE and the Trump administration are exploiting the information to enforce immigration laws.

New 'G': Google's logo glow-up costs a fortune
ALBAWABA - Google has secretly unveiled a slight revamp of its famous "G" logo, garnering a lot of attention and igniting internet discussion—not because of the difference in appearance, but rather because of the potential cost of the alteration. Also Read Google refers to Persian Gulf as 'Arabian Gulf' in latest update Google's recognizable red, yellow, green, and blue hues are still present in the redesigned logo, but a seamless gradient transition has taken the place of the formerly separate chunks. Users have taken note of the seemingly little change, and many have resorted to social media to ridicule what they perceive to be a costly and needless alteration. Sarcastic estimates of "a few thousand dollars" and conjectures that a graphic designer made "millions for using the Smudge tool in Photoshop" were among the comments. Although the redesign's precise cost has not been made public, branding experts estimate that such adjustments, particularly at Google's magnitude, may cost millions of dollars. That idea gains support from historical comparisons: the BBC's 2022 rebranding cost £7 million, whereas Pepsi allegedly paid $1 million for a comparable minor makeover in 2008. A total of $211 million is said to have been spent on BP's rebranding. The change seems to have been done by Google as part of a larger visual alignment with the new Gemini AI platform's design approach. Only the iOS version of the Google Search app has received the updated logo so far, but Android and more services are anticipated to follow. Similar improvements could soon be made to other product icons, including Maps, Gmail, and Chrome. Google's iconic "G" logo has been updated for the first time in a decade. A gradient has been added to replace the distinct boundaries between the colors. Considering the huge cost of rebranding, this new logo could cost millions:

Musk attributes black eye to playful punch from son X at White House farewell
Elon Musk appeared at a White House press conference on Friday with a visible black eye, which he said was caused by his 5-year-old son, X Æ A-12. The event marked the conclusion of Musk's 130-day tenure as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Musk explained that the bruise resulted from a playful interaction at home. 'I was horsing around with little X and told him to punch me in the face. He did,' Musk said during the briefing, held alongside President Donald Trump. 'I didn't feel it at the time, but it turned into this.' President Trump responded lightheartedly, saying, 'That was X that did that? If you knew X, he could do it.' The event included a formal farewell for Musk, during which Trump presented him with a symbolic golden key. According to DOGE figures, Musk's efforts led to over USD 175 billion in savings through canceled contracts, asset sales, and fraud reduction—an average of USD 1,087 per taxpayer. Musk said he would continue supporting DOGE in an informal capacity and focus on his private ventures, including Tesla and SpaceX. The press conference came hours after The New York Times published a report alleging Musk's use of controlled substances, including ketamine and psychedelic mushrooms, during his government service. Musk declined to directly address the claims, instead criticizing the publication's past reporting. Musk also dismissed speculation about the source of his injury, joking that he had not been in France, referencing a recent viral video involving French President Emmanuel Macron. Musk said his son was not present at the event and was with his mother, Canadian musician Grimes.
