No Syro-Malabar representation in upcoming papal election as Cardinal Alencherry turns 80

The Hindu21-04-2025
Even as the prospects of next papal election are on the horizon in Rome, the Syro-Malabar Church — one of the most prominent Eastern Catholic churches under the Holy See — finds itself without a voting representative. Cardinal Mar George Alencherry, the former head of the Syro-Malabar Church, turned 80 on April 19, thereby losing his eligibility to vote in the conclave.
According to Church protocol, only cardinals under the age of 80 are permitted to vote in the papal conclave, which decides the next pope. This leaves the Syro-Malabar Church, despite its sizeable community of 5.5 million members, without a voice in the selection process.
Fr. Antony Vadakkekara, Secretary of the Media Commission of the Syro-Malabar Church, noted that Cardinal Mar Baselios Cleemis of the Syro-Malankara rite of the Catholic Church and Cardinal Mar George Koovakkad will participate in the upcoming conclave. 'Although we cannot officially consider Mar Koovakkad as a representative of the Syro-Malabar Church, we still regard cardinals from Kerala as part of our broader spiritual family,' Fr. Vadakkekara said.
Eligible to vote
He also clarified that there are currently four cardinals from India eligible to vote in the conclave: Archbishop Antony Poola of the Hyderabad Archdiocese, Metropolitan Archbishop Filipe Neri of Goa, Cardinal Baselios Cleemis of the Malankara Church, and Cardinal Koovakkad.
However, Mar Koovakkad, though originally from the Syro-Malabar Church under the Changanacherry Archdiocese, now serves as a cardinal of the Latin Church and will not represent the Syro-Malabar Church in the election.
During the 2013 papal election that saw Pope Francis elected, both Mar George Alencherry of the Syro-Malabar Church and Mar Baselios Cleemis from the Malankara Church had voting rights. 'In that conclave, Mar Alencherry was the face of the Syro-Malabar Church in Rome. Had his 80th birthday fallen a few days later, he might have been able to cast his vote in the upcoming election as well,' a Church source observed.
The Syro-Malabar Church, based in Kerala, remains one of the most influential Eastern Catholic communities under the Holy See. However, the absence of a voting representative in the next conclave underscores the challenges Eastern Churches face in securing proportional representation within the global Catholic hierarchy.

Disturbing that Catholic religious being targeted: Church magazine

Panaji: The archdiocese of Goa and Daman, in the latest issue of its bulletin, 'Renovacao', has stated that it is extremely disturbing and hurtful that priests, nuns, and law-abiding faithful who selflessly contribute towards the civilised social fabric of the country are targeted as being unconstitutional and unlawful. 'It is still surprising that the Church in India, despite the backing of Articles 25 to 28 of the Constitution, never made attempts to convert anyone by illegitimate means. It is much more astounding that those who studied in Catholic/Christian educational institutions and benefited from Catholic/Christian medical institutions, are conniving with the anti-Christian groups,' stated the editorial, 'Justice the foundation of a civilised society'. 'It is still more frightening that the selfless services rendered by Christian organisations towards those where no other organisation or community dares to tread are confused with human trafficking and against the anti-conversion laws,' the editorial added. The bulletin went on to state that the Christian community in India, and especially the Catholic Church, contributed tremendously to maintaining and exercising the principles of justice, thereby promoting the sustainability of a civilised society. 'Despite being a negligible minority in terms of numbers, the Catholic Church contributed tremendously in the fields of education, medicine, hygiene, and social upliftment, irrespective of creed, region, language, and culture,' it stated, adding that the Church always upholds the principles of justice and works towards the foundation of a just and civilised society despite being mistakenly misunderstood and harassed. With one exit and two additions, Goa cabinet sees a rejig

Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira on Wednesday resigned from the Goa cabinet, citing personal reasons, paving the way for a cabinet reshuffle in the state. In a letter addressed to Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Sequeira, who was also holding Law and Judiciary, Legislative Affairs and Captain of Ports portfolios, said he was 'compelled' to take the decision to resign from the Council of Ministers due to 'personal reasons'. Two new Ministers – Ramesh Tawadkar and former chief minister Digambar Kamat – will be inducted in the Sawant-led cabinet, and the swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to be held at the Raj Bhavan at noon on Thursday. At a press conference at the Secretariat, Sequeira said, 'I am not giving (the resignation) on health grounds because I believe I have improved drastically. I am resigning due to personal reasons. I think I will be relieved of a lot of responsibilities that I had taken on my shoulders. I have no issues with the party. I will continue to be a member of the BJP. I was toying with the idea (of resigning) for some time. I received whole-hearted support of the CM in my tenure.' Sequeira denied he was under any pressure to quit. On whether a Catholic legislator will replace him in the cabinet, he said, 'I do not know. This is a question that you should pose to the chief minister.' In his resignation letter, Sequeira thanked Sawant 'for giving me the opportunity to serve under your leadership.' Sequeira's exit leaves two cabinet berths vacant. The first fell vacant after former Art and Culture Minister Govind Gaude, a tribal leader, was dropped from the cabinet in June after he levelled corruption allegations in the department of Tribal Welfare – a portfolio held by Sawant. Senior BJP tribal leader Ramesh Tawadkar, the Speaker of the Goa legislative assembly, confirmed that he would be inducted into the cabinet. Tawadkar, who represents Canacona constituency, said he will resign from the Speaker's post on Thursday, and thereafter he will be sworn in as a minister. 'I wanted to continue as the Speaker, but the party has decided to give me this responsibility. The party organisation wanted me to take this post. So, I have to abide by the party's decision,' he said. Sequeira will be replaced in the cabinet by former chief minister and Margao MLA Digambar Kamat. Sequeira and Kamat were among the group of eight turncoat MLAs who switched over to the BJP in September 2022. 'I am getting an opportunity to serve the people of Goa. I am thankful to God, the central leadership of the party, and the chief minister,' Kamat said.

Resignation rumours swirl, Goa environment minister Aleixo Sequeira says: ‘Some truth… toying with the idea'

Amid rumours that he is set to resign from the Goa cabinet, Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira on Wednesday acknowledged there was 'some truth' to the reports which suggested that he will tender his resignation due to 'personal reasons'. Sequeira, who is also holding Law and Judiciary, Legislative Affairs and Captain of Ports portfolios, told the media, 'There is some truth, but I am yet to submit the resignation. I am toying with the idea, but I am yet to take a final decision.' On the reasons for his resignation, if and when it happens, he said, 'Basically personal reasons.' Party sources said Sequeira could submit his resignation to the Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant later on Wednesday. In case of his exit, two cabinet berths will fall vacant, paving the way for a cabinet reshuffle in the coastal state. In June, former Art and Culture Minister Govind Gaude was dropped from the cabinet after he levelled corruption allegations in the department of Tribal Welfare, a portfolio held by Sawant. If he steps down, Sequeira is likely to be replaced in the cabinet by the former chief minister and Margao MLA Digambar Kamat. Sequeira and Kamat were among the group of eight turncoat MLAs who switched over to the BJP in September 2022. Sources said the Speaker of the Goa legislative assembly, Ramesh Tawadkar, is also expected to be inducted in the cabinet. Tawadkar, a senior tribal leader, is likely to resign from the Speaker's post on Thursday, according to party sources. Sawant, who is in Delhi for a meeting of the group of state ministers (GoM) on GST-related issues, is expected to return to the state late on Wednesday or Thursday. Speculations about a cabinet rejig in the state have been rife for several months. Last week, BJP state president Damodar 'Damu' Naik hinted at the possibility, saying the reshuffle could take place before the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. This would be the second reshuffle in the Sawant-led government since the BJP retained power and formed the government in the 2022 assembly elections. Former Congress veteran Sequeira, who represents Catholic-dominated Nuvem constituency, was inducted into the cabinet in November 2023, a decision explained by the party as fulfilment of a 'promise' and a 'commitment' made when he joined the party. Sequeira has been in and out of the hospital in the past few months. He has also faced flak from the BJP for the party's dismal performance in Salcete – the district's most populous taluka, which has a majority Christian population – in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The party polled fewer votes than the Congress in seven out of eight assembly segments in Salcete and lost the South Goa constituency by 13,535 votes. On the sidelines of a party meeting of the core committee and legislators in January, the former BJP state president and Rajya Sabha MP Sadanand Shet Tanavade seemed to rebuke Sequeira, claiming he 'must introspect' whether he 'fit' into the party's system and must ponder whether he wanted to contest the 2027 assembly election on a BJP ticket. Tanavade later played down his remarks, saying he was responding to a question on the party failing to achieve 50 per cent enrolment in some constituencies in a membership drive.
