5 Challenges faced by students and parents during NEET counselling
Application & documentation errors:
Having the correct documents and having them verified and approved by the proper authorities is the biggest error zone for students and parents. This causes a stressful experience during counselling, and in some cases, it may also lead to loss of seat due to disqualification.
Choice-filling confusion:
There are 767 medical colleges in India. Knowing about all of them and listing them for choice-filling is crucial, but a difficult task for students and parents. Can the mistakes made in choice filling lead to allotment of an inferior college despite a good NEET
Rank
? The answer is yes.
Reservations & categories:
There are 800+ reservations and categories in India. Not knowing your applicable categories and not utilising them to your advantage may decrease your chances of securing a seat allotment.
Fee structures & budget planning:
The 398 Government, 289 Private, 55
Deemed
, and 25 central universities (CUs) offer seats under various fee structures, ranging from ₹1,000 to ₹89 Lakh per annum. Not having advanced budget planning for multiple types of colleges may lead to lost opportunities or the selection of a college that is inferior to the student's rank.
Note:
Two Deemed Medical Colleges, with pending approval from the NMC, are not included. If approved, there will be 57 Deemed Universities in India by 2025.
35+ NEET counselling bodies:
Effectively navigating through AIQ counselling, 28 State counselling, and 8 UTs results in 35+ counselling portals, rules, regulations, deadlines, reservations, categories, and competition levels is a massive task for students and parents. It gets overwhelming for students and parents, and without regular guidance, it may result in lost opportunities.

Far-off NEET-PG centres spark distress among aspirants; IMA-JDN urges ministry to act
New Delhi: The Indian Medical Association-Junior Doctors' Network (IMA-JDN) has submitted an urgent representation to Union Health Minister J P Nadda , raising serious concern over the allotment of NEET-PG centres. The move came after aspirants across the country reported being allotted exam centres in far-off states for the medical entrance test , triggering widespread distress and anxiety. With the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Postgraduate (NEET-PG) scheduled on August 3, the IMA-JDN has urged the Union Health Ministry to direct the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) to reopen the exam centre change portal so that the affected candidates can avail the option of choosing centres within their home state or nearby locations. In the representation, the IMA-JDN emphasised that while some students have received centres in nearby cities, thousands of candidates have been assigned exam centres in distant states, for which they have to undertake long, expensive, and stressful journeys to unfamiliar destinations. The doctors' body said in a statement, "This move is causing much concern, especially among the economically weaker sections, ladies, and those from remote or rural regions." "This disparity not only affects fairness but could negatively impact students' mental well-being and performance in this critical, once-a-year exam," it said. "IMA-JDN remains committed to ensuring equity and accessibility in all aspects of medical education and examination systems," the doctors' body added. PTI

NEET aspirants seek more exam centres in state
T'puram: A majority of state's 20,000 aspirants, who registered for NEET PG 2025 examination, scheduled for Aug 3, got examination centres in far away places in other states. Only 13 examination centres were allotted for Kerala and these were filled within one hour of beginning the registration process on National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) portal. The centres were allotted through the portal on a first-come, first-served basis. As a result, many candidates who didn't secure centres in Kerala got centres in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Although many attempted to opt for centres in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, they were unsuccessful as those centres also filled up quickly. Indian Medical Association-Junior Doctors Network (IMA-JDN) has urged Union health minister to allot more examination centres either in the home state or in neighbouring cities. "We approached Centre a week ago, but there has been no favourable response yet from them," said Dr Sreejith N Kumar, national chairman of the network. The demand of aspirants taking the exam is that Union govt either increase number of seats at examination centres in Kerala or increase the number of examination centres. "We approached MPs from Kerala to exert pressure on Centre. While some students received centres in neighbouring cities, many others are being forced to undertake long, expensive and stressful journeys to unfamiliar destinations," said Dr Sreejith. tnn
