Paul Finebaum reacts to Ohio State WR Jeremiah Smith being called best in college football

Sometimes you hear things you just can't believe, especially when a precedent has been set.
ESPN's Paul Finebaum's rise to fame came from being the mouthpiece of the SEC. At times it's warranted, and at other times it feels like a schtick to how he plays things up and riles up opposing fanbases not drinking sweet tea and eating grits. And while Finebaum has given Ohio State credit in the past, more often than not, teams and players performing athletic feats in the game of football in the south often get the benefit of the doubt.
Color me and a lot of others surprised then by the way Finebaum reacted to the question of whether or not Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith was the best in college football. ESPN's unofficial SEC mascot didn't even hesitate when asked the question on a segment of "Get Up" on the "worldwide leader."
'That he is, he's so good, Greeny. You know, doing the draft, where he would have gone last year, it's incredible he has to stay in college with all the convoluted rules, 'Finebaum said. 'The biggest issue they had last year with Chip Kelly calling the plays was getting him the ball enough. Remember, in the Michigan game. He didn't get the ball enough in the Texas game. I think that will change this year, but he is without a doubt the best player in the game.'
I wouldn't say Finebaum's response is shocking, but it might be a little surprising. However, when you have a talent like Smith, who almost every national media member believes is the best player in college football, sometimes it's so obvious that going against it just doesn't make any sense. Heck, even Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore was drinking the scarlet and gray colored Kool-Aid when asked about Smith at Big Ten football media days.
Finebaum does bring up a good point, though. Can the Ohio State coaching staff and new quarterback get Smith the ball enough in some of the most important games to pull out wins that could mean the difference between a Big Ten and College Football Playoff national championship, and simply having another really good year?

Esteban Ribovics expects first-round finish of Elves Brener at UFC on ESPN 71

Esteban Ribovics is calling a quick finish for his UFC return. LAS VEGAS – Esteban Ribovics expects a quick night at the office. The Argentine UFC lightweight believes he will only need one round to get the job done ahead of his fight against Elves Brener in the main card of UFC on ESPN 71 (ESPN, ESPN+) – which takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex. Ribovics (14-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) respects Brener (16-5 MMA, 3-2 UFC), and is aware of his durability, but he's confident he can put him away come fight night. "I see the advantage in my hands," Ribovics said at media day on Wednesday. "I know I have heavy hands, and I know I'm capable of ending the fight in the first round, so I'm going for it. I'm going to use my hands. I know that he has a good jiu-jitsu game and can take a shot, but I don't think this fight is getting past the first round." Should things go his way on Saturday, Ribovics is hoping to get one more fight before the end of the year. He'd like to close out the year with three fights and further himself from his close, split decision loss to Nasrat Haqparast in March. "My plan is to fight again this year, around November, December," Ribovics said. "I want to end the year with three fights for the year. And if it's in a big arena, it would be even better. I get much more fired up fighting in an arena where there's people, and if I'm the visitor, I love it even more.

Cowboys' Dak Prescott makes major health declaration before training camp

The post Cowboys' Dak Prescott makes major health declaration before training camp appeared first on ClutchPoints. Unfortunately, the Dallas Cowboys must deal with the arrest of an important player. They also have several tight positional battles. But there's good news as Dak Prescott made a major health declaration before the team's 2025 training camp. Prescott said he's ready to get with it, according to a post on X by Todd Archer. Dak Prescott said he is fully healthy and ready to go for training camp from his hamstring surgery, pending one more checkup with the team doctors. No surprise, considering he took part in all of the drills in the offseason program. At the most important position, the Cowboys are good to go as they head into training camp. Cowboys expect good things from healthy QB Dak Prescott Prescott said his focus is on getting something that has eluded his grasp thus far, according to The soon-to-be 32-year-old Prescott said it's not a legacy he's chasing. 'Yeah, I want to win a championship,' Prescott said. 'The legacy, the things, whatever comes after I finish playing, will take care of itself. I want to win a championship. Be damned if it's just for my legacy. Or if it's for this team, for my personal being, for my sanity. Yeah, the legacy will take care of itself. I have to stay where my feet are.' It seems certain that Prescott must continue his good health if the Cowboys are going to reach such lofty goals. Each time he missed significant portions of the season, the Cowboys faltered without him behind center. Prescott said the Cowboys are headed in the right direction. 'These OTAs, just the way that I've been seeing minicamp, the communication with (head coach Brian Schottenheimer), with the quarterbacks or the quarterback room, just a lot of good things,' Prescott said. 'A lot of really good things that have me in a great place. I'm healthy. Excited as hell.' Prescott didn't exactly get a ringing endorsement recently from Schottenheimer, according to Scottenheimer said Prescott is in a developmental phase along with the team's other quarterbacks. 'I think they all are,' Schottenheimer responded to a question about sophomore quarterback Joe Milton III, who the Cowboys acquired via trade this offseason, being in the developmental phase of his career. 'I think Dak is in the developmental phase. It sounds crazy for a guy who's played that much, but there are things we're tweaking with Dak. It's not just for Joe.' Popular Big Ten podcast releases wild record prediction for Spartans this season

Do you think Michigan State football will lose its season-opener to in-state foe Western Michigan? Do you think that's even possible to happen? Well, there's at least one popular Big Ten podcast host who believes it's going to happen. Jon "JR" Rhoades of The Big Ten Huddle released his complete record predictions for every school in the Big Ten this week, and his thoughts for the Spartans were quite surprising. If not, outright wild... Rhoades has the Spartans going 5-7 overall on the year, which in itself isn't jarring or surprising to see. Michigan State has a win total over/under of 5.5 at many sports books so a 5-7 record is certainly in the realm and a common pick for the Spartans this year. But what stood out as wild to me is the fact that he has Michigan State going 5-7 overall with a 4-5 mark in conference play. For those that don't have the Spartans' schedule memorized or handy, Michigan State will play Western Michigan, Boston College and Youngstown State at home in non-conference play. This would mean, that Rhoades is predicting the Spartans to drop two of those three games -- which I'm assuming would be to Western Michigan and Boston College to open the season 0-2. Michigan State is currently an 18.5-point favorite over the Broncos on FanDuel for some perspective of how the betting experts expect the season-opener to play out. Maybe Rhoades didn't look at the Michigan State schedule before putting out this prediction or maybe he's very high on the Broncos entering this season. I even suppose he could be leaning towards an even more massive upset with the Penguins of Youngstown State coming into Spartan Stadium and shocking the world as a FCS school beating a Big Ten squad. Whatever may be the reasoning for this record, I personally will be ready to fire up the Jonathan Smith hot seat chatter if Michigan State were to go 1-2 in non-conference play this season. That isn't even something I'm personally considering in play -- which maybe isn't fair to Western Michigan or Youngstown State. Hopefully, Rhoades is completely wrong with this prediction and we don't see a massive upset to start the season on August 29. If he's right, though, then we are in for a very, very long season...
