PSG have achieved 'our ultimate goal', says Luis Enrique

Since their Qatari takeover in 2011, PSG have won 11 of the past 13 French titles but the grand prize for which the club had spent big had always eluded them. On Saturday, PSG sliced Inter to pieces at the Allianz Arena to emphatically put that right. Luis Enrique, who won the Champions League at the helm of Barcelona in Berlin in 2015, said he had his sights set on the title ever since he took over in the French capital in 2023. "On my first day at the PSG campus, my French was even worse than it is today. But I said the ultimate goal for me as a coach was to fill the trophy cabinet," the Spaniard said. "The only trophy missing was Champions League. And we've ticked that box. We were ambitious, and we did it. "It's in the bag and it's coming home with us tomorrow." The manager singled out forward Ousmane Dembele for special praise, calling him "incredible" and saying "he deserves to win the Ballon d'Or." The coach paid tribute to his daughter Xana, who passed away from cancer in 2019 aged nine. After the full-time whistle, the French fans unfurled a banner depicting father and daughter planting a PSG flag into the ground, just as the two had done with a Barcelona flag in Berlin a decade earlier. "It was emotional. It's beautiful that the supporters thought about me and my family. But I don't need to win the Champions League or even a game to think about my daughter," Luis Enrique said.

PSG's Champions League hero Doue says 'dream becomes reality'

The 19-year-old lit up Munich's Allianz Arena, scoring twice and providing an assist as PSG routed Inter Milan 5-0. "I don't have the words," said the French teenager. "Thanks to the Parc (des Princes, PSG's home stadium), thanks Paris. "A dream has become reality. It's just magnificent. It's crazy, I'm so happy. "It's just the beginning." PSG have been guided to the continental crown for the first time in their history by Spanish coach Luis Enrique. "It's time to have a big party," said Luis Enrique, who also won the Champions League with Barcelona 10 years ago. "We have to make the most of this moment," added the 55-year-old. "I feel this connection with the players and the supporters, it's very strong. It's a great moment, we deserve it. We managed to control the tension." © 2025 AFP

Champions League final: Paris will see an unprecedented police deployment

French authorities have aimed to dispel the unenviable memory of the 2022 UEFA Champions League final, held at the Stade de France, a major stadium in the northern Paris suburb of Saint-Denis. That day, the match between Real Madrid and Liverpool turned into a security fiasco, with hundreds of Spanish and British fans being attacked, robbed and assaulted, all while the police officers present appeared overwhelmed by the events. Therefore, the deployment of 5,400 police officers and gendarmes throughout Paris, for the period around the match between Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Inter Milan, held in Munich and scheduled for Saturday, May 31, is set to be as much about security as it is about political considerations – as well as about France's international image. The government, and, above all, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, face a three-fold challenge. For weeks now, several meetings have been held at the Paris Police Prefecture, the nerve center of security for a sporting event that has been deemed high-risk. To ensure that it goes ahead without a hitch, the authorities have called in large numbers of law enforcement personnel, including mobile gendarmes, riot police, intervention units and transit police. In addition, plainclothes officers have also been prepared for deployment, and they have received clear orders from Paris' Public Security Directorate. Plainclothes teams "will be primarily tasked with fighting crime, by detecting and suppressing pickpocketing, violent theft and other assaults that could target spectators and fans in public transport. The security operation will have to be particularly proactive and result in the systematic arrests of offenders."
