Rubio urges Syrian authorities to prevent IS resurgence by any means
Washington, July 20 (UNI) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called on Syrian authorities to deploy all available resources to prevent the resurgence of Islamic State (IS) and other Islamic terror groups if the country hopes to move toward lasting peace. 'If authorities in Damascus want to preserve any chance of achieving a unified, inclusive and peaceful Syria free of ISIS and of Iranian control, they must help end this calamity by using their security forces to prevent ISIS and any other violent jihadists from entering the area and carrying out massacres,' Rubio posted on X. His remarks come amid relative calm in the Druze majority province of Suwayda in southern Syria, following several days of deadly clashes between Druze and Bedouin militias. According to Syrian Interior Ministry spokesperson Nour al-Din al-Baba, fighting in the city has now ceased. The violence, which erupted last week, reportedly began when armed Bedouin factions attacked Druze settlements. Over 30 people were killed and more than 100 wounded in the ensuing clashes, including 20 soldiers loyal to the Syrian transitional government, according to the Syrian Defence Ministry. To curtail the violence, Syrian security forces were deployed to Suwayda in an attempt to restore law and order and dismantle unauthorised armed groups. However, their involvement further exacerbated the situation as the security forces were notably aligned with the Bedouins, with Israel intervening and bombing several targets, such as the Defence Ministry headquarters, and a military complex near the Presidential Palace. Damascus later confirmed that it had removed all its military infrastructure from the area, giving the Druze residents freedom to monitor their own security. However, following the evacuation of all internal security forces, renewed violence gripped the area, with Damascus deploying its forces to restore law and order. While Israel has typically opposed any Syrian military presence in southern Syria, it gave Damascus a limited time period of 48hrs to send its security apparatus to contain all violence. Putin meets Khamenei's top adviser Larijani for nuclear talks
Russian President Vladimir Putin held a surprise meeting with Ali Larijani, top adviser to Iran's supreme leader on nuclear issues, to discuss Tehran's nuclear programme in the Kremlin on Sunday (July 20, 2025). Moscow has a cordial relationship with Iran's clerical leadership and provides crucial backing for Tehran but did not swing forcefully behind its partner even after the U.S. joined Israel's massive bombing campaign on Iran in June. Mr. Larijani 'conveyed assessments of the escalating situation in the Middle East [West Asia] and around the Iranian nuclear programme', Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said of the unannounced meeting. Mr. Putin had expressed Russia's 'well-known positions on how to stabilise the situation in the region and on the political settlement of the Iranian nuclear programme', he added. Separately, a German diplomatic source said on Sunday (July 20, 2025) that Britain, France and Germany are planning to hold fresh talks with Iran on its nuclear programme in the coming days. Iran's Tasnim news agency also reported that Tehran had agreed to hold talks with the three European countries, citing an unnamed source. Last week, Russia slammed a story by U.S. news outlet Axios, citing anonymous sources that said Mr. Putin had 'encouraged' Iran to accept a deal with the United States that would prevent the Islamic republic from enriching uranium. Iran has consistently denied seeking a nuclear weapon, while defending its 'legitimate rights' to the peaceful use of atomic energy.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami says parliament must function through Islamic laws
In a major announcement to derail secular credentials Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mujibur Rahman has said that only Islamic laws should be followed in the national parliament in future, and there should be no place for man-made ideas or systems. He made the remark at a public rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka on Saturday calling for meeting a seven-point demand, including 'justice' for the August 2024 mass killings, holding elections in a proportional representation system, and ensuring a level-playing field for all parties to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful vote. 'If Pakistan's 24 years and Bangladesh's 54 years are added together, it amounts to 78 years. During this entire period, Islam has not been established in the national parliament, and not a single law based on the Quran has been implemented, resulting in unrest, corruption, and widespread suffering for the people,' Rahman the rally, echoing Rahman, Jamaat executive council member ATM Azharul Islam said that if the fate of the 180 million people was to be changed, it could only be achieved by following the laws Allah.'Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is not a political party in the conventional sense, nor is it merely a religious organisation; it is a comprehensive Islamic movement with no affiliation outside Islam,' he said. Representatives from the Nationalist Citizen Party, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Hefazat-e-Islam, Khelafat Majlish, Gono Odhikar Parishad, and Nezam-e-Islam Party were present at the meeting, while no representative from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed told reporters that the party had not received any invitation from the the Bangladesh Railway operated four special trains on the Dhaka–Chattogram, Dhaka–Mymensingh, Dhaka–Rajshahi, and Dhaka–Sirajganj routes between Friday night and Sunday morning to transport local-level Jamaat leaders and supporters to Dhaka for the rally, officials said on Saturday.
