Music Review: On Addison Rae's ‘Addison,' a new pop powerhouse is born

Hamilton Spectator12 hours ago

NEW YORK (AP) — The pop album of the summer is here. Addison Rae's debut, 'Addison,' is full, stuffed with bejeweled, hypnotic pop songs for the post-'BRAT' crowd. Hedonism has a new hero.
For those who've watched her rise, it's almost impossible to believe. It wasn't so long ago – almost exactly a year into the COVID-19 pandemic – that a young Rae went on 'The Tonight Show' and taught its host
Jimmy Fallon
a few
stiff, meme-able TikTok dance moves,
then what made up the bulk of her career. It was met with almost immediate backlash, as is common for young women with viral posts. But she wielded it like a weapon: Social media celebrity begat acting roles for Rae, then a coveted collaboration with
Charli XCX
in the form of a 'Von Dutch' remix, and now, at age 24, her final form: becoming the hyper-ambitious, hyper-femme pop star for the current moment.
As a full body of work, 'Addison' taps into the genre-agnostic zeitgeist, where pop music appears edgy and elastic. The songs speak for themselves, from the pitch-shifted trip-hop 'Headphones On' and the snapped percussion, minor chords, NSFW lyrics and vanishing synths of 'High Fashion' to the
Madonna
'Ray of Light'-cosplay
'Aquamarine' atop a house beat and its chantable, spoken chorus: 'The world is my oyster / Baby, come touch the pearl / The world is my oyster / And I'm the only girl.'
Humor and girlhood are intertwined with less of a
Sabrina Carpenter-wink
and more of cheery irony. 'Money loves me,' she yells on 'Money Is Everything.' 'I'm the richest girl in the world!' Then, a giggle and a kiss. ('Girl,' to this writer's count, is uttered 20 times across the album. Across its 12 tracks, she is both the divine feminine and the girl next door. Often, they are one in the same.)
Rae isn't reinventing the wheel here, but she is carefully pulling from her inspirations. Her story recalls
Britney Spears:
The pair are from Louisiana, became famous young, and recorded their unique, sensual, layered pop music in Stockholm, Sweden, in and around super producer
Max Martin.
There's the earned
Lana Del Rey
parity, like in the 'Born to Die'-channeling 'Diet Pepsi,' echoes of Charli in the bouncy opener 'New York,' and tinges of ethereal
Enya production
on the dreamy 'Summer Forever.'
For 'Addison,' Rae partnered with two primary collaborators – Luka Kloser and Elvira Anderfjärd, who goes simply by Elvira – an unusually small team for a major label pop release. But that intimacy is one of the album's superpowers, a sensibility that teeters between close mic recordings and big late-night anthems. In the latter case, look no further than 'Fame Is a Gun,' an easy song-of-the-summer contender, a sunglasses-in-the-club banger with synthetic vocal textures and an unignorable chorus.
In the lead up to the release of 'Addison,' Rae has positioned her early TikTok fame as a means to an end. There aren't many avenues to Hollywood from Lafayette, Louisiana, and social media, for some, is a democratizing tool. Rae used her dance training to build a name for herself on the platform, something that has no doubt laid an ideal foundation for pop superstardom – just consider how
Justin Bieber
did something similar with covers on YouTube not so many years ago. It feels full circle, then, that Rae's stellar debut album aims to do what her videos on TikTok attempted to do, what she's always wanted to do — dance, and get others to dance, too.

'Like, you're happy and fun, and then…' the late-night host said, to which Sweeney added, 'And then they say, 'Action!' and then I'm screaming and crying. 'Spending more time with my friends. And I'm loving it.' The actress' remarks came after an insider told People in March that the former couple's relationship had been 'rocky for a long time' and Sweeney 'didn't feel right' about tying the knot with the 41-year-old businessman and film producer. 'She's exactly where she wants to be,' the source told the outlet. 'Most people would feel overwhelmed by her working schedule this year, but not Syd.' 'She's all about working right now and very excited about all her projects,' they added. 'This is what she wants to focus on right now.'

Chappell Roan Did the Viral ‘Apple' Dance During Charli xcx's Primavera Sound Set: ‘Love You B–ch!'

Charli xcx had a very special guest for her Primavera Sound set in Barcelona at the Parc del Fòrum on Thursday night (June 5). On opening night of the festival, Chappell Roan shocked the crowd when she showed up to expertly do the viral 'Apple' dance during Charli's set (watch the moment below). Chappell, wearing a grey skirt and black top covered by a cut-up sweatshirt, slapped on a pair of oversized bug-eye glasses as she joyously bounced along to the song from Charli'x Brat album along with a handful of other fans from what looked like a balcony. Roan lip synched along to the lyrics 'I think the apple's rotten right to the core/ From all the things passed down/ From all the apples coming before' while doing the dance's signature hand jive. Roan appeared to be loving it and Charli also seemed elated by the A-list pop in, shouting, 'Make some f–king noise right now! Chappell I f–kin' love you b–ch!' as Roan shook her butt for the camera. Roan will get her chance on stage at Primavera when she headlines on Saturday night (June 7). The special moment came 20 songs into Charli's 31-song setlist as part of a tradition during the singer's Brat-era shows when the camera finds someone in the crowd to do the dance. Roan isn't the only fellow star to take on the challenge, either. To date, everyone from BLACKPINK's ROSE to Clairo, Foo Fighters singer Dave Grohl and daughter Harper, Stephen Colbert, Ashley Tisdale, Cara Delevingne, Kerry Washington, Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos, Joe Jonas, Jessica Alba and many more have taken a swing at the choreo created by TikToker Kelley Heyer. In addition to Roan, Saturday night's Primavera Sound lineup also features Haim, Beach House, Stereolab, Sabrina Carpenter, Wet Leg and TV on the Radio, among others. An Elephant Wanders Into a Grocery Store and Steals Crackers, a Sandwich and the Internet's Heart

In Thailand, a wild elephant lumbered into a grocery store and helped himself to all the goods as if he was taking over the place. Now, the male elephant known as Plai Biang Lek is taking over the internet, too. Plai Biang Lek entered a store in Pak Chong, Thailand, after finding his way there from Khao Yai National Park, according to NBC News. Video of the incident circulating on social media shows the giant animal, plastered in mud, the inside of the small store as he towers over a wall of shelves packed with snacks and groceries. The store's owner, Kamploy Kakaew, and national park workers can be heard trying to wrangle the elephant out of the store as he munches away, seemingly unfazed. Speaking to NBC News, Kakaew recalled how the behemoth managed to feast on several items from her morning haul, including dried bananas, nine bags of sweet rice crackers and a sandwich. 'This sandwich, the whole pack was gone,' she said. Plai Biang Lek was eventually escorted from the shop's premises without anyone being harmed. Still, he didn't leave the store empty-trunked. The video shows him making his departure with a parting snack tucked against his chest. The chaos and crumbs left behind might have been local to Thailand, but the laughs and comments are now global. On Instagram and TikTok, users have reacted to the video with amusement and affection, with TikTok calling Plai Biang 'impossible to ignore.' 'That elephant was being very mindful, very demure,' one user commented on Associated Press' Instagram page. 'Previous human looking for favorite snacks in the afterlife for sure,' replied another. ''Hello boss?'' one replied, leaning into the absurdity. 'So, it's just that I don't know where to start.'' 'Insurance company: a WHAT entered the store?' someone quipped. 'They'd love Costco,' chimed in another. 'This sounds like a math problem,' one user mused. 'If one elephant eats 3 apples, how much will it cost to replace the ceiling?' 'Me in the kitchen at 2 am,' came another joke. Khao Yai National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located some 114 miles away from the city of Bangkok, according to the park's website. It is a home to a diverse range of wildlife, including reptiles, birds and mammals like Plai Biang Lek. In Thailand, elephants are cultural figures of royalty and strength. While deeply respected, their numbers have dropped significantly due to poaching, habitat encroachment and the increase of human-elephant conflicts, according to the World Wildlife Fund. In 2020, the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP), started a plan to ease these conflicts by increasing food and water resources for animals within their protected habitats.
