Turkey: 12 soldiers killed after being exposed to methane gas during rescue mission

Hans India5 days ago
Ankara: Turkey's Ministry of Defence on Monday said that 12 soldiers of the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF), who were affected by methane gas during a search operation conducted to find the remains of another Turkish soldier in a cave in northern Iraq, have died in the line of duty.
"On July 6, 2025, in the Operation Claw-Lock region, four more of our heroic comrades-in-arms who were affected by methane gas were martyred in a search and screening operation carried out in a cave used by members of the separatist terrorist organisation at 852 Altitude Hill, and the number of martyred personnel increased to 12," the Ministry stated on X.
It mentioned further that Turkey's Defence Minister Yaşar Guler went to the region with the TAF command level to conduct inspections and attend the farewell ceremonies of the soldiers who passed away in the incident.
The ministry said that the incident took place on Sunday, when the rescue mission started to find the soldier's remains who was killed during a military operation against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).
Around 19 soldiers, who were exposed to the gas in the cave, were immediately rushed to the hospital for the required treatment, the ministry said.
Although the cave was cleared by Turkish soldiers, it was known to have been used in the form of a hospital by the PKK in the past, being at an altitude of 852 metres (2795 feet).
In May, the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) had announced its decision to disband and disarm, ending the four-decade long conflict with Turkey.
The decision came after PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan, in February urged the group to meet and formally decide to disband. The leader has been imprisoned on an island near Istanbul, Turkey, since 1999.
"The 12th PKK Congress has decided to dissolve the PKK's organisational structure and end its method of armed struggle. The process initiated by Leader Abdullah Ocalan's statement on February 27, and further shaped by his extensive work and multidimensional perspectives, culminated in the successful convening of our 12th Party Congress between May 5–7," read a statement from the group which was carried by pro-Kurdish news agency ANF.
"Despite ongoing clashes, aerial and ground attacks, continued siege of our regions, and the KDP embargo, our congress was held securely under challenging conditions. Due to security concerns, it was conducted simultaneously in two different locations. With the participation of 232 delegates in total, the PKK 12th Congress discussed Leadership, Martyrs, Veterans, the Organizational Structure of the PKK and Armed Struggle, and Democratic Society Building, culminating in historic decisions marking the beginning of a new era for our Freedom Movement," the statement further said, according to ANF.
The PKK, which is designated a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union, has been rebelling against the Turkish government for the last more than 30 years.
Turkish security forces frequently conduct cross-border operations in northern Iraq, targeting PKK hideouts and bases.

After murder allegation, SC/ST panel probes Dalit man's death

TIRUPPUR: The Tamil Nadu State Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (TNSCSCST) has initiated an investigation into the death of a 42-year-old visually impaired wage labourer near Dharapuram in Tiruppur district. K Murugan, who belonged to the Arunthathiyar community, was found dead in his village, Sennakkalpalayam on June 26. Although the Alangiyam police confirmed his death as a suicide, pro-Dalit outfits and parties raised doubts and claimed that Murugan was murdered by unidentified people from the dominant community of the village. They also demanded a 'serious investigation' be conducted into this matter. On Friday, the SC/ST commission members S Selvakumar and M Pon Dhous conducted an investigation in Sennakkalpalayam. 'They interrogated Murugan's wife and children, and villagers. Earlier, they had inspected the area where Murugan's body was found,' sources said. Khalistani Terrorist Threatens Kapil Sharma Days After Canada Cafe Shooting

Pro-Khalistan separatist group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) founder Gurpatwant Singh Pannun has threatened actor-comedian Kapil Sharma, saying "Canada is not your playground" and threatened him to "take back his blood money back to Hindustan". In a video message, Pannun, who was designated an "individual terrorist" by the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2019, also accused Mr Sharma of promoting Hindutva ideology on the pretext of doing business in Canada and said the country will not allow such ideas to take shape on its soil. The threat came days after Mr Sharma's newly-opened restaurant, Kap's Cafe, in Surrey, British Columbia, came under fire by unknown men on Wednesday night. Harjit Singh Laddi and Toofan Singh - both linked to proscribed terror outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) - claimed responsibility for the attack. BKI is recognised as a terrorist outfit by the Canadian government. Laddi is on the National Investigation Agency's most-wanted list. "Canada is not your playground. Take your blood money back to Hindustan. Canada will not allow violent Hindutva ideology to take root on Canadian soil under the guise of business," Pannun said in the threat message directed at Mr Sharma. He sought to know if Kap's Cafe was "just a comedy venue or part of a larger strategy to export Hindutva". "One business at a time?" he asked. On Wednesday, shots were fired at comedian Mr Sharma's Kap's Cafe that opened on July 4. No one was injured in the incident. In an Instagram post on Friday, the cafe said they were "processing the shock" but stand firm against violence. Mr Sharma is yet to respond to the incident. SFJ is a banned organisation under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for its anti-national activities which, according to the home ministry, are prejudicial to the internal security and integrity of the country. The SFJ continues to be involved in anti-national and subversive activities in Punjab and elsewhere and intended to disrupt the sovereignty and territorial integrity of India, the ministry said earlier. According to the Centre, SFJ maintains close ties with militant outfits and activists, actively encouraging and aiding secessionist activities, including attempts to destabilize the democratically elected government of India. The National Investigation Agency has registered and is probing several cases against Mr Pannun. The SFJ founder has a total of 104 cases against him, all of which are either being probed by NIA or the states where they have been registered.

Kapil Sharma To Stop Shooting For His Netflix Show After Firing At His Canada Cafe?

Last Updated: On July 10, several shots were fired at a newly opened cafe in Surrey, British Columbia, owned by comedian Kapil Sharma and his wife, Ginni Chatrath. After firing at Kapil Sharma's newly opened cafe in Canada, the comedian's security has been stepped up. As reported by the news agency IANS, personnel from the Mumbai police visited Kapil's Mumbai residence on Friday, following which his security has been beefed up. Moreover, it remains unclear if Kapil will resume shooting for his ongoing The Great Indian Kapil Show. A source cited by the news agency claimed that Kapil is yet to decide if he will go to the shoot of his Netflix show in Filmcity. More details are awaited. What Happened At Kapil Sharma's Canada Cafe? On July 10, several shots were fired at a newly opened cafe in Surrey, British Columbia, owned by comedian Kapil Sharma and his wife, Ginni Chatrath. The cafe- named Kaps Caffe- had just celebrated a soft opening, drawing attention for its elegant pink-and-white interior, floral accents and a menu of artisan coffee and desserts. However, celebrations turned to chaos when the eatery was vandalised. While no injuries were reported, the property suffered damages. Authorities believe that the attack was a targeted strike by the Laddi gang linked to the banned Khalistani terrorist outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI). Laddi is wanted in India for multiple terror-related offences and is alleged to be the mastermind behind several recent attacks on Hindu leaders and pro-India figures. Kapil Sharma Yet To Break Silence On The Incident While Kapil Sharma has not issued any statement as of now regarding the incident, the Kap's Caffe team issued a statement on Friday which said, 'We opened Kap's Caffe with hopes of bringing warmth, community, and joy through delicious coffee and friendly conversation. To have violence intersect with that dream is heartbreaking. We are processing this shock, but we are not giving up." The statement also thanked patrons for their support during this difficult time. 'Your kind words, prayers, and memories shared via DM mean more than you know. This café exists because of your belief in what we're building together," it added. Concluding on a hopeful note, the café wrote, 'Let's stand firm against violence and ensure Kap's Caffe remains a place of warmth and community." view comments First Published: July 12, 2025, 09:51 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
