Denver's new women's pro rugby team drops its name
The big picture: On Wednesday, Women's Elite Rugby announced the names and team colors for six clubs participating in its inaugural season.
The Onyx will compete against the (San Francisco) Bay Breakers, Boston Banshees, Chicago Tempest, New York Exiles and the Twin Cities Gemini.
State of play: The league sought to capitalize on interest in the sport sparked by the U.S. women's national rugby team earning its first-ever Olympic medal last year.
Between the lines: Denver's team name pays homage to the state's mineral wealth.
It's is a nod to the Colorado rose onyx, found inside the Capitol building, and the black onyx that's also mined in the state.
What we're watching: The league has not yet announced where the Denver Onyx will play.
What's next: The league will release its schedule Feb. 4, with games starting in March.

Thompson is fastest in the world this year — clocking 9.75 in June — and won Saturday in Poland when Lyles was second in an encouraging 9.90. Heavy rain marred the women's field events for Olympic champions at the 50th anniversary meet in Lausanne. High jump world record holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh opted to stop after one failure each at 1.86 meters and then 1.91, and javelin gold medalist Haruka Kitaguchi placed last. The women's pole vault event was stopped entirely. Standout performances early in the program, when the rain was just light, saw Olympic 800 champion Keely Hodgkinson win in 1 minute, 55.69 seconds and Cordell Tinch take the 110 hurdles victory in 12.98 seconds. ___
