The cash-strapped Pakistan Hockey Federation has managed to send its national team for the FIH Nations Cup being held in Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia from June 15-21.PHF secretary Rana Mujahid said that the federation president, Mir Tariq Bugti had got grants from the government, sponsorships and even individual donations to ensure the senior team plays in all its international events in the calendar year."The PHF is going through a financial crunch but we are managing somehow because unless our players don't compete regularly they will never move forward," the Olympian said.Pakistan is currently ranked 15th in the FIH rankings, an improvement from the 20th position in 2022.The Green Shirts didn't qualify for the last World Cup and last feattured in the 2012 London Olympics.Mujahid said the current federation was trying its best with its limited resources to first and foremost ensure players had no complaints about financial hardships.They were facilitated properly and given the best training and preparation before each event."I have been a player myself and I know when the federation takes good care of a player he focuses completely on his game," he said.In a first, the PHF has allowed head coach Tahir Zaman to select the 20-member squad himself without the help of any selectors.Shakeel Imad Butt has been retained as captain for the eight-nation competition, which also features hosts Malaysia, France, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, South Africa and Wales.Rana Waheed was named as vice-captain for the campaign.The squad includes goalkeepers Muneer-ur-Reh-man and Abdullah Ishtiaq, alongside field players Mohammad Abdullah, Mohammad Sufyan Khan, Abdul Manan, Hamad Anjum, Arshad Liaquat, Mo-een Shakeel, Zakrya Hayat, Ghazanfar Ali, Salman Razaq, Junaid Manzoor, Afraz Khan, Abd-ul Rehman and Ahmed Nadeem.Mohib-ullah and Rana Waleed will travel as reserves."The selected team is a balanced one and we are hopeful that this team will produce desired results," Tahir said."I picked the players based on their camp and recent performances in international events," he added.He said the FIH Nations Cup was a major event for Pakistan as a win would mean a promotion to the FIH Pro League next year and also prepare the players to qualify for next year's World Cup from other events like the Asia Cup and qualifying tournament.

Eighteen-year-old D Gukesh's triumph as the youngest world champion last year began a season of excellent results for India's chess prodigies with the likes of R Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, Vidith Gujarati, Koneru Humpy, Divya Deshmukh and R Vaishali delivering consistently strong performances in high pressure international events. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Deshmukh (19) became the youngest women's World Cup winner last month, beating Humpy in the final. 'Brimming with a new confidence, our youth are making a mark in sports and games. Chess, for example, is now dominated by India's youngsters like never before. We foresee transformative changes which will establish India as a global sporting power-house under the vision contained in the National Sports Policy 2025,' the President said in her address. 'Our daughters are our pride. They are breaching barriers in every field, including in the areas of defence and security. Sports are among important indicators of excellence, empowerment and potential. A nineteen-year-old girl (Deshmukh) and a thirty-eight-year-old woman (Humpy) from India were the finalists in the FIDE Women's World Cup for chess championship,' she said. 'This underlines the sustained and globally comparable excellence across generations among our women. The gender gap in employment has also been reducing. With 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam', the empowerment of women is no longer a slogan but a reality,' she added. The National Sports Policy calls for accountability of administrators and establishment of processes to 'ensure ethical practices, fair play and healthy competition in the sports sector.' It also professes the creation of national agencies and inter-ministerial committees to facilitate swift action and effective resolution of issues, promoting transparency and seamless operations across the sports ecosystem. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The policy proposes a revamped funding mechanism, including initiatives such as 'Adopt an Athlete', 'Adopt a District', 'Adopt a Venue', 'One Corporate-One Sport', and 'One PSU-One State' wherever feasible. After the policy's unveiling on July 1, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya also tabled the long-awaited National Sports Governance Bill in Parliament. The landmark legislation, which ensures a strict regulatory framework for National Sports Federations besides a speedy dispute resolution mechanism, has been passed by both houses of Parliament. Mandaviya, who has described it as the single biggest sporting reform since independence, has vowed to ensure the implementation of its provisions within the next six months.

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan broke his silence on being removed from commentary for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL). Reports had suggested he was snubbed for "bringing personal grudges on-air" and targeting players with whom he "had a fallout a few years ago." While no names were explicitly mentioned, Rohit Sharma was widely speculated to be among them. Pathan has now addressed the matter. Pathan explained that he only wanted to tell the truth to the fans. "Rohit Sharma is an amazing white-ball player. However, his average in Test cricket that year was 6. So we said that if Rohit was not the captain, he would not have got a place in the playing eleven," he said. Earlier on Wednesday, Lallantop released a teaser of their interview with Pathan, in which he sensationally revealed how commentators were forced to back Rohit despite his below-par performance in Test cricket, following the former India Test captain's decision to 'opt out' of the Sydney game against Australia. It has now been revealed that Pathan's comment was merely a follow-up response to his clarification on why he was removed from IPL commentary. "People say that we have supported Rohit over the top. Obviously, if anyone comes on your broadcasting channel, you will not misbehave with them. Like you have invited me, I have come, so you will show politeness. And you should show politeness. When Rohit also came, he was our guest. It was presented as if we are supporting him. But we were the ones who said that he does not deserve a place. However, this did not work. The interview thing was more talked about," he said.
