Nicola Sturgeon says rapist Isla Bryson is a ‘biological male'
Controversial reforms, which would have allowed transgender people to self identify as their preferred gender, had been passed by Holyrood late in 2022, only to be blocked by Westminster in January 2023.
Not long afterwards Bryson – who was born Adam Graham – was sent to a women's only jail after being convicted of raping two women, before being transferred to a male prison.

In her first television interview ahead of the publication of her memoir Frankly this week, Ms Sturgeon said that anyone who commits the 'most heinous male crime against women probably forfeits the right to be the gender of their choice'.
However, the former SNP leader went on to tell ITV News At Ten presenter Julie Etchingham that 'that probably was not the best phrase to use'.
That remark came after Ms Sturgeon stated: 'Isla Bryson identified as a woman.
'I think what I would say now is anybody who commits the most heinous male crime against women probably forfeits the right to be the gender of their choice.'
Asked why she did not simply say Bryson is a biological male, Ms Sturgeon said that 'they are a biological male' but added the issue 'gets back into the self-ID thing'.
The former first minister continued: 'I should have been much more straightforward, I wasn't, but that's because of the debate. We'd lost all sense of rationality in this debate. I'm partly responsible for that.'
However, Scottish Tory leader Russell Findlay said: 'Frankly, Nicola Sturgeon must be delusional if she thinks the women of Scotland will swallow this drivel.'
The Conservative MSP said Ms Sturgeon had 'ignored all warnings that gender self-ID would be a gift to male predators like Isla Bryson' adding that she 'ordered her SNP MSPs to vote down my attempts to block rapists and other sex criminals from being able to legally change their gender by self-declaration'.
Mr Findlay said: 'Her absurd ideological belief in self-ID collapses with her belated mealy-mouthed admission that this rapist is a man, but she still can't bring herself to say sorry for all the pain and misery she has caused.'
Referring to then Conservative Scottish secretary Alister Jack's decision to step in and prevent the Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill from becoming law, Mr Findlay said that without this 'common-sense decision to block Sturgeon's dangerous law, every rapist in Scotland would be able to declare themselves as women with the full support of the state'.

After sharing the distressing news, GMB hosts Adil Ray and Charlotte Hawkins invited Labour minister Catherine McKinnell onto the show to provide viewers with a better understanding of the government's plans to address the issue. Aldi started off by asking pointedly: "Where else are you going to put these asylum seekers? What is the plan?" However, the Minister of School Standards declined to answer the question, choosing instead to discuss the challenging system that had been inherited from the previous government. She replied: "We inherited a huge mess in terms of our immigration system from the previous government. At its peak in 2023, they had 400 asylum hotels - it's now down to 210. We've committed to ending the use of hotels for asylum seekers but we've said it will take until the end of this parliament to achieve that. "There are many ways that we are tackling this, one of which though is to tackle the backlog of claims because many of these people are just waiting in these hotels for their asylum cases to be processed." "So we are doubling the number of claims that are being processed, we're deporting people who shouldn't be here," she continued. At this stage Adil stepped in, pressing once again on the original question regarding the plans to move the residents to the hotel. He urged: "Let's look at those living in The Bell Hotel. We know they've got to move out in the next few weeks. That is a decision made by the High Court. Where are you going to put those initially? Are they just going to be put into another hotel? another town?" Ms McKinnell said: "You ask a legitimate question and these are legitimate concerns that local communities have had and we take it very seriously as a government, but I can't speculate on what the Home Office is doing." Adil fumed: "You don't know, do you? You don't know, and there doesn't seem to be a plan." It didn't take long for viewers to flood X, formally known as Twitter, sharing their frustrations with the situation. One user expressed: "Another MP who thinks the public are stupid! She thinks by responding to Adil & Charlotte's question 'That is such an important question' but then doesn't answer it will make people feel better. It was a pathetic interview, we need better quality MPs in all parties, it's insulting!!" New call to increase Personal Allowance to £15,597 to help people boost finances
A petition posted on the Petitions Parliament website has urged the UK government to 'set the income tax personal allowance to £15,597 and higher rate to £62,379.02' A fresh online petition, signed by over 4,200 people, is demanding an increase in the personal tax allowance from £12,570 to £15,597. The aim is to "give more people money in their pockets to pay their bills" and reduce reliance on government assistance. The petition's creator, Andy Hobson, is also calling on the UK Government to raise the higher income tax threshold from £50,271 to £62,379.02. Earlier this year, the Labour Government announced that the Personal Allowance would remain frozen at £12,570 until April 2028. The proposed income tax thresholds by the campaigner are based on the current thresholds, which have been in place since 2021. Mr Hobson argues that "as we pay more for goods, our tax-free allowance stays the same, meaning we're getting poorer." Recent figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveal that the rate of inflation has now climbed to 3.8 per cent. The ONS attributes the rise in inflation to a surge in transport costs, particularly airfares, as families jetted off on holiday and a spike in food prices. Food inflation leapt to 4.9 per cent in July from 4.5 per cent in June as supermarkets grappled with global supply chain disruptions and economic uncertainty closer to home, reports the Daily Record. Core inflation, which excludes more volatile items such as food, alcohol, and tobacco, also increased in the 12 months to July to 3.8 per cent from 3.7 per cent in June. In simple terms, households continue to grapple with the fallout from the cost-of-living crisis. The 'set the income tax personal allowance to £15,597 and higher rate to £62,379.02' petition has been posted on the Petitions Parliament website. At 10,000 signatures, it would be entitled to a written response from the UK Government and at 100,000, it would be considered by the Petitions Committee for debate in Parliament. The petition states: "Set the tax-free allowance at £15,597, calculated via the Bank of England inflation calculator vs 2021 when the current rate was set. The same for the higher rate, currently £50,271 set in 2021, this should be £62,379.02. "We think this would give more people money in their pockets to pay their bills and rely less on government help. This could also mean more money being spent, so more VAT in the government's pocket too. "We are currently suffering fiscal drag because of this, and the previous government chose to freeze thresholds, but we think this is a stealth tax. As we pay more for goods, our tax-free allowance stays the same, meaning we're getting poorer." It's crucial to note that there are different tax banding rates in Scotland and England. England has four tax bands, whilst there are six north of the border. Calls for ramps and lifts at Aberdeenshire train station
Conservative MP Harriet Cross says she has written to Transport Scotland about the need to make the station more accessible. She said: 'It is awful to hear about the difficulties users with disabilities, reduced mobility, and those travelling with prams, luggage or bikes are still having to face at Insch railway station. 'For almost two decades, Network Rail, along with Transport Scotland, have neglected this issue and have repeatedly ducked any responsibility on the matter. 'This situation forces some passengers to travel out of Insch in order to use other stations that have step-free access, which is an unreasonable and inconvenient solution, particularly in rural Aberdeenshire where alternatives are limited.' The Campaign for North East Rail (CNER), a community group advocating for better transport links throughout the region, has backed a petition launched by Ms Cross. The group posted on X: 'Official advice for disabled passengers to access the train at Insch is to get a taxi to Inverurie or Huntly. This state of affairs has been a known problem for many years, Accessibility is reserved to Westminster, it is shocking that the Department of Transport have not made this a priority project!' 'Public transport must be inclusive and accessible for all, which is why I have also written to Transport Scotland to work with Network Rail so level access can be provided to both platforms at Insch.' According to the National Rail website, the station, which is based on the busy Aberdeen-Inverness line, does not have lifts or accessible toilets, and while 'there is some step-free access to platforms, this may be in 1 direction only.'
