Gaylord S.T.O.P. chapter helps family get tires, backs donation drive for homeless
GAYLORD — New tires have made a difference in the lives of a student and their family thanks to a member of the Gaylord chapter of the Michigan State Police Trooper Outreach Partnership (S.T.O.P.).
While volunteering as a coach, S.T.O.P. board member Nathan Lawes discovered that a student and their family were using an air compressor daily to fill leaking tires just to manage basic needs like getting to school, practice, work and the grocery store.
The trooper saw the urgent need of new tires for safe, reliable transportation. The S.T.O.P. chapter partnered with Walmart of Gaylord to purchase four new all-weather tires for the family's vehicle. Thanks to this collaboration, the student and their family now have a safe and dependable means of transportation.

Separately, an act of compassion by a third grader at South Maple Elementary School in Gaylord has grown into a school-wide effort to help people experiencing homelessness.
The eight-year-old student's idea — to collect pillows and blankets for those in need — inspired others to rally behind the proposal. The student reached out to the Michigan State Police for assistance and the State Trooper Outreach Partnership responded quickly, contacting the school principal to help turn the idea into reality. From that collaboration, the Share the Warmth initiative was created.
Now, the third grade class at South Maple Elementary will be collecting new pillows and blankets from May 5–9. All donations will go to The Refuge of Otsego County for distribution to individuals and families in need.
The Michigan State Police Gaylord Post will also accept donations 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. from May 5-9. If your child attends South Maple, donations can be dropped off at the school.

Teens arrested after driving off with gas pump attached to stolen car in Detroit, police say
Four teens were taken into custody after Michigan State Police attempted to check on a stolen car that was fueling up at a gas station in Metro Detroit, the Michigan State Police reported. The suspects were ages 13, 15, 17 and 17. The pursuit began about 1:35 a.m. Friday, near 8 Mile Road and Ward Street, after troopers noticed a stolen Lincoln passenger car parked at a Marathon gas station fuel pump. When troopers turned on the cruiser's emergency lights, two people ran out of the car. The driver sped off with the gas pump still attached to the car and one passenger still inside. Additional state troopers arrived to give chase. The two suspects who had run through the neighborhood, including some backyards, were caught and taken into custody. In the meantime, the Detroit Police Department located the car that had fled from the scene, arresting the driver and the passenger who remained inside. All four were taken to the Detroit Police 12th Precinct for investigation of the stolen vehicle. Because of their ages, Michigan State Police contacted Wayne County Juvenile Detention Center to see if they could be taken into custody. Those arrangements could not be made, and as a result, all four were turned over to their guardians. Michigan State Police said they plan to submit a petition to Wayne County for a decision on charges.

Two teenagers seriously injured after rollover crash in Washtenaw County
Two teenagers were injured in the aftermath of a rollover crash early Sunday near Ann Arbor, Michigan. The crash happened about 3 a.m. on northbound US-23 near Geddes Road in Washtenaw County's Ann Arbor Township, according to a report from the Michigan State Police, Brighton post. The driver, a 17-year-old male from Ypsilanti, was taken to Trinity Hospital in Ann Arbor, where he was listed in critical condition. He was ejected from the 2018 Nissan Rogue during the crash. The passenger, a 16-year-old female, was trapped in the SUV when first responders arrived. She was also taken to Trinity Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition. Troopers said the preliminary investigation showed the Nissan was southbound on US-23 when the driver lost control, crossed the median and rolled several times. Northbound US-23 near Geddes Road was closed from about 3 a.m. to 6:45 a.m. as a result of the crash, according to Michigan Department of Transportation traffic reports. The investigation is continuing. Troopers ask that anyone who has information to share about the crash contact the Brighton Post at 810-227-1051.

First responders urge safety amid road work on I-75 road in northern Oakland County
It has been frustrating for drivers in Oakland County since the Michigan Department of Transportation began its Interstate 75 North Oakland Project from Grand Blanc to Independence Township. Concerns have started to grow about more than just the traffic from the construction, and also the safety hazard it's creating, especially after multiple recent serious collisions on that stretch of road, including one where a man died Tuesday night. "Last night, we had a driver who got out of their vehicle and stood in the left lane of I-75 to assess the damage. Unfortunately, that driver was struck and killed by another that did not see them," said Michigan State Police 1st Lieutenant Mike Shaw. Tuesday's tragedy sparked a group of first responders in the area to let the public know they want drivers to slow down or avoid I-75 altogether. "The problem is when you're on that road, there's nowhere to go, so traditionally when you get in an accident or have a problem on the highway, you have the ability to get off the shoulder of the road and get to somewhat of a safe position," said Springfield Township Fire Chief Matt Covey. Covey sent out a public safety alert Wednesday morning alongside the Fire Chiefs of Groveland Township and the North Oakland County Fire Authority because they say emergency response teams are now experiencing serious delays due to blocked shoulders, gridlocked traffic, and limited rerouting options. "So you know if you're having a heart attack or something traumatic, and it takes us 25-30 minutes to get to you, that's part of your golden hour and opportunity of survivability." Said Covey. He also says that he's recommending his own family take alternate routes—and he's now strongly recommending you do the same. But if you do take that stretch of I-75, use extreme caution and stay in your vehicle if you're in a crash. CBS News Detroit contacted MDOT for comment, and it said it is considering the following:
