India – Business Wire India Receives grant funding of SGD 500,000 (~INR 3 crore); plans to scale tech-enabled eldercare and expand into high-demand Tier 2 and 3 cities
The enterprise was among four winners collectively awarded SGD 3 million (~INR 20 crore); the awards recognised innovators shaping the future of ageing.
Life Circle Health Services, a Hyderabad-based social enterprise, has been named one of four global winners of the DBS Foundation Impact Beyond Award 2024. Launched last year, the award aims to supercharge impactful businesses that are addressing urgent needs in ageing societies.
(From left to right) Claire Wong, Lead (Business for Impact), DBS Foundation; Anant Kumar, CEO of Life Circle Health Services; Dr. Fidah, Vice Chairman, Healthcare & Life Sciences (Global Partnerships), Temasek International; Chen Ze Ling, DBS Group Head of Corporate and SME Banking; and Nie Jianming, Chairman of Huakang Health Group, discuss the role of private-public-people collaborations in scaling social impact.
As part of the recognition, Life Circle will receive SGD 500,000 (~INR 3 crore) in grant funding, along with access to DBS Foundation's broader ecosystem of support — including expert mentorship, capacity building, and partnership/networking opportunities. It is one of four enterprises collectively awarded SGD 3 million (~INR 20 crore) by DBS Foundation. In addition to the funding, winners receive ongoing support from the bank to drive their next phase of growth, including new product development, operational scaling, and capacity building.
The DBS Foundation Impact Beyond Award builds on the DBS Foundation's longstanding efforts to nurture innovative, purpose-driven businesses that create positive societal impact. It also underscores the Foundation's commitment to uplifting the lives and livelihoods of vulnerable communities across Asia and shaping a more inclusive future.
With demographic changes such as ageing populations affecting many parts of the world today, DBS Foundation is committed to empowering seniors to age well — with dignity and joy — ensuring they remain healthy, connected, and able to contribute meaningfully to society. According to the India Ageing Report 2023 by UNFPA, India's elderly population is projected to exceed approximately 20% by 2050. As this demographic shift accelerates, the need for affordable, accessible, and professional eldercare services is becoming increasingly urgent.
Life Circle is addressing this gap through a tech-enabled marketplace that connects trained caregivers with families based on individual health and personal care needs. It is India's only full-stack eldercare company, combining training, certification, placement, and managed home care under one brand. Life Circle's hybrid (phygital) model — which includes a mobile app, caregiver training, and quality checks — helps improve the overall quality of home-based eldercare in India. With this award, it will expand to Tier 2 and 3 cities that are seeing heightened demand, launch new training academies, roll out digital learning tools, and upgrade its technology to better manage onboarding and quality assurance for caregivers.
Karen Ngui, Head of DBS Foundation and DBS Group Strategic Marketing and Communications, said, 'Societies are ageing rapidly, and it is sobering to see that we're living in a world where there are more people over 60 years of age than under five. We are thus very encouraged to see DBS Foundation's inaugural batch of Impact Beyond Award winners embedding purpose at the core of their business and delivering transformative solutions to meet the urgent needs of ageing societies. In India, a large part of eldercare is delivered by the informal sector — Life Circle is addressing this critical gap by making eldercare more professional, structured, and accessible, while also creating dignified livelihoods through caregiver training. By supporting enterprises like our Impact Beyond Award winners, we aim to build a future where every individual, at every stage of life, can age with dignity, purpose, and joy.'
Anant Kumar, CEO, Life Circle Health Services (India),said, 'We are deeply honoured to receive the DBS Foundation Impact Beyond Award. This recognition strengthens our mission to build India's eldercare infrastructure — one caregiver at a time. With DBS Foundation's support, we will accelerate our efforts to train youth from underserved communities and ensure seniors receive the dignified care they deserve.'
Life Circle's model not only supports ageing in place but also promotes economic empowerment by skilling and employing rural women as professional caregivers. To date, the enterprise has placed over 5,000 caregivers — 76% of whom are women — and conducts more than 100,000 home visits annually.
Life Circle was selected from nearly 100 submissions, following a rigorous evaluation process involving senior DBS leaders and independent external experts. The other winners of the 2024 Impact Beyond Award include:
Buddy of Parents (Singapore): AI and IoT-powered smart home solutions that enhance safety, reduce the caregiving burden, and promote independent living.

Bengaluru IT professional sues employer for leaving him in Uganda, wins Rs 3 lakh

A Bengaluru-based techie has won a legal battle against his former employer, securing unpaid dues of Rs 3 lakh with 6 per cent annual interest, along with a relieving letter and the return of his original educational certificates and the other withheld documents, following a dispute over an overseas assignment in 2019. According to a report in The Times of India, Rakshith M V, a resident of ITI Layout, Papareddipalya, Bengaluru, joined Locus IT Services Pvt Ltd in September 2016 and resigned in August 2020. In December 2019, the firm assigned him to a client project in Kampala, Uganda. The assignment, however, ran into delays. Rakshith alleged that he was 'stranded' in Uganda until July 2020, receiving neither financial assistance nor technical support despite 'repeated requests'. He further claimed that his salary and allowances were suddenly halved during the extended stay and that the company continued deducting Rs 3,600 every month towards provident fund contributions, which were never deposited. On top of this, expenses on domestic travel and other charges amounting to nearly Rs 3 lakh were never reimbursed, the TOI reported. According to Rakshith, the managing director of the company had conveyed decisions, including the pay cut and his prolonged stay, only through verbal communication. 'There was no formal email trail, leaving me with no written proof,' he said. After resigning, Rakshith issued a legal notice in September 2021, but it was returned 'unclaimed.' He went on to file a civil suit in January 2022, demanding reimbursement and release of his certificates. The company, represented by its managing director Rohith Kudukuli, denied all allegations and accused Rakshith of absconding mid-project. However, additional city civil and sessions judge Shivanand Maruti Jipare ruled in Rakshith's favour, directing the firm to clear his dues with 6 per cent annual interest and hand over his certificates, the report added. While the court acknowledged that the company had shown Rakshith left Uganda without approval, it observed that this did not justify withholding his dues or crucial documents. The judge said such actions had caused him 'irreparable hardship' and put his career at risk.

From stomach paralysis to vision loss: Ozempic faces over $2 bn lawsuits

Ozempic, the diabetes drug turned global weight-loss phenomenon, is under intense legal and medical scrutiny. Once promoted as a breakthrough drug and a safe shortcut to shedding kilos, this injectable is facing over $2 billion in lawsuits in the US, with patients reporting severe side effects ranging from stomach paralysis to vision loss. Why is Ozempic getting sued? Ozempic, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist originally designed for diabetes, shot to global fame when celebrities and social media influencers started using it for slimming down. Social media feeds were flooded with 'before and after' reels, driving demand worldwide. But lawsuits are piling up. According to more than 1,200 GLP-1 lawsuits have been consolidated into multidistrict litigation in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Patients reported conditions such as gastroparesis (stomach paralysis), vomiting, and vision problems, alleging that Novo Nordisk failed to provide adequate warnings. The website of the Law Offices of Melinda J Helbock, a San Diego-based firm, notes that the total liability could exceed $2 billion, with numbers expected to rise further. What does Novo Nordisk have to say? According to Helbock's website, Novo Nordisk continues to deny wrongdoing, stating that Ozempic is safe when used as directed. However, plaintiffs argue that the company failed to fully disclose the risks, especially for its off-label use in weight loss. The company insists Ozempic is US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved for diabetes only and that labels already warn about gastrointestinal side effects. They argue that off-label weight loss use has exploded beyond its intended scope, thanks to social media hype. But legal experts say the $2 billion lawsuits could be just the beginning. Not all users face severe side effects. Many have lost weight successfully without major issues. But experts warn that, as evident from multiple reports of side effects, short-term gains may come with long-term risks. What doctors advise for current users Not all users face severe side effects, and many have reported successful weight loss without major issues. Still, experts caution that short-term gains may carry long-term risks. Doctors recommend that those already using Ozempic: Ozempic is not a magic wand for weight loss. While it can help shed kilos quickly—fueling its popularity—it comes with risks. The mounting billion-dollar lawsuits underscore a wider lesson: in the battle against weight, there is no free lunch.
