Malaysia sweep into Asian Cup takraw semis after crushing South Korea
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia stormed into the Asian Cup sepak takraw semi-finals in style after thrashing South Korea 3-0 in their final Group B match at the Titiwangsa Stadium on Saturday.
The emphatic win confirmed Malaysia's place in the team regu semi-finals as group champions, following earlier victories over Japan and Brunei.
Ahmad Jais Baharun's men are expected to face India, Group A runners-up, in the last four, with a potential grudge final against arch-rivals Thailand on Sunday.
Malaysia are chasing their first regu team title since the 1991 Manila Sea Games.
Malaysia's top regu of Haziq Hairul Nizam, Azlan Alias and Farhan Adam made light work of Korea's Cheon Dong Ryung, Seon Woo Young Su and Oh Dae Yang, winning 15-6, 15-9.
The second regu, featuring Syahir Rosdi, Shahalril Aiman Halim and Amirul Azwan Amir, followed up with a 15-6, 15-11 triumph over Seo Seung Beom, Lee Junuk and Kim Young Cheol.
The clean sweep was completed by the third regu of Zulkifli Razak, Afifuddin Razali and Aidil Aiman Azwawi, who dispatched Nam Sang Hun, Shin Hee Seop and Kim Jung Man 15-8, 15-7.
National head coach Ahmad Jais was pleased with the performance and urged his team to keep the momentum going.
"We saw clear improvement from our players today. We hope to build on that in tomorrow's semi-final," said the former national star.
Malaysia have already enjoyed success at the Asian Cup, winning the quadrant event and edging Thailand in the regu final on Thursday. They also finished runners-up in the doubles, losing to Thailand last week.
Meanwhile, national player Khairul Aman Rosdi has been ruled out for the rest of the tournament due to health issues.
The 22-year-old suffered complications before the match against Japan on Friday and was rushed to hospital.
He has since undergone minor surgery and has been replaced by Noraizat Nordin.
"I had the chance to speak to Khairul Aman after his surgery. He's still in hospital and will not feature in the remaining matches," said Sepak Takraw Association of Malaysia president Datuk Sumali Reduan in a social media post.

Plotting victory over Vietnam
Healthy challenge: Winger Safawi Rasid (centre) is ready for the stiff competition with the arrival of new heritage players. — Bernama PETALING JAYA: It has been over 10 years since Malaysia defeated Vietnam on the football pitch, and head coach Peter Cklamovski wants to end that drought. And to achieve that, their friendly against Cape Verde today will be his final testing ground ahead of the clash against Vietnam on June 10 for the 2027 Asian Cup third-round qualifiers at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil. 'As a country, we have not beaten Vietnam for over 10 years,' he said ahead of the squad's training session yesterday. 'We have full respect for Vietnam as a team and as a country, and we'll be giving everything we've got to change history. Malaysia's last win against Vietnam came in the 2014 AFF Cup when Harimau Malaya won 5-4 in the semi-final. Vietnam never lost any of their next eight matches against Malaysia, only settling for a 2-2 draw in the 2018 AFF Cup. Although the friendly with Cape Verde is a closed door match, it will be Cklamovski's first time leading the team in Bukit Jalil, but the Australian is more focused on the task at hand. 'Cape Verde have the qualities to challenge us and we need to be ready for it. This game will help us develop the final phase of our training for tough opponents like Vietnam. 'The friendly isn't going to be a two 45-minute game. We're controlling the minutes and want to play a game that's going to be at the highest possible intensity,' he said. Malaysia drew 1-1 against Cape Verde last Thursday at the Cheras Football Stadium in their first friendly match. On the arrival of new names in the squad, Cklamovski remained tight-lipped, as rumours about Argentine striker Rodrigo Holgado, and Spaniards Jefte Betancor and Jon Irazabal continue to circulate. 'There are a lot of names out there, some names I haven't even seen before. There's a lot of speculation, and I respect that. 'But at the moment we are focused on our match,' he said. Meanwhile, winger Safawi Rasid said the possible arrival of new heritage players doesn't scare him, stating that it would create healthy competition within the team. 'For me, I think it's good for the team because there will be healthy competition in training. 'As a local player, or any other player for that matter, we should all be giving everything we have during training without excuses,' he said.

Argentina-born Garces joins Harimau Malaya
KUALA LUMPUR: Who would have thought an Argentine defender had ancestral ties to Malaysia? Well, Facundo Garces does, and he's now officially part of the Harimau Malaya set-up, the FA of Malaysia (FAM) confirmed on Monday. The 26-year-old centre-back, who hails from Santa Fe, began his career with Colon in Argentina and currently plays for Deportivo Alaves in Spain's La Liga. Garces has been cleared to represent Malaysia and is expected to feature in a closed-door friendly against Cape Verde on Tuesday, ahead of the crucial Asian Cup qualifier against Vietnam at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on June 10. National coach Peter Clamovski welcomed the new addition, describing him as a calm, experienced presence in defence. "Facundo is a fantastic character," said Clamovski. "He's a composed defender with leadership qualities and top-level experience. "More importantly, he's incredibly passionate about representing Malaysia and making the country proud." Garces, clearly emotional about the opportunity, said pulling on the Malaysian jersey was a moment of great personal pride. "Being part of this national team is an incredible honour," he said. "Since arriving, I've felt the warmth, the family spirit, and genuine support from everyone here. "If this is just the beginning, I can't imagine how powerful it'll be when the whole country is behind us. "I'm ready to give everything for Malaysia." With all his paperwork finalised, Garces is eligible for immediate selection and is currently training with the squad during the Fifa international window, which runs from June 2-10.
