Nigerian police arrest 22 suspects after deadly bus attack
ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Police arrested on Sunday 22 suspects accused of a mob attack that left at least a dozen people killed two days ago in central Nigeria.
A passenger bus was mobbed in the Mangu area of the state of Plateau, according to a police statement released Saturday. The passengers traveled from Zaria, in north-western Kaduna state, about 400 kilometers (about 249 miles) from Mangu and were on their way to a wedding when the attack happened Friday night after they lost their way.
Police said 21 were rescued from the 'angry mob,' and that some passengers were killed, without providing further details. Nigeria's police, a federal authority, often provide lower death tolls than local authorities and witnesses.
Meanwhile, rights group Amnesty International said 12 people were instantly killed and 11 others injured in the attack.
'Authorities must ensure that the actual persons behind the horrific attack are brought to justice,' the rights group said in a statement on Saturday.
Plateau Gov. Caleb Mutfwang said law enforcement should ensure justice is served and implement measures to prevent any recurrence.
Nigeria's north-central region has been plagued by increasing violence, driven by farmer-herder clashes and attacks on communities by armed gangs.
At least 100 people were killed in a deadly gun attack on a village in neighboring Benue state about two weeks ago.

Residents told of the moment they heard a 'huge bang' after a fire ravaged a home in Bury on Sunday evening (June 22). The roof of one home on Sandgate Road was left scorched and exposed after the blaze, which saw five people rushed to hospital from the scene at around 5pm. Officers were stationed at either end of the cordon as fire crews were seen entering and conducting investigations at the home. One family who live nearby said they heard a 'huge bang' that they described to being 'like massive fireworks going off' shortly before 5pm. Moments later they saw smoke filling the air and the roof of the house obliterated. 'We just heard this huge bang," they said. "We can see it from our window. It was like massive fireworks going off. "Then we saw all the smoke and the fire brigade before we knew it. It looks like it spread from the house next door." The roof of the home was exposed and smoking on Sunday evening, with the attic of the property seeming to have been the worst hit by the blaze. It's cause has not been confirmed. In a statement, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: 'At just before 5pm today (Sunday 22 June) fire crews were called to reports of a fire at a domestic property on Sandgate Road, Whitefield. 'Six fire engines from Manchester Central, Whitefield, Heywood, Salford, Broughton and Agecroft quickly attended the incident. Firefighters used eight breathing apparatus and two hose reels to extinguish the fire. 'Five people were assessed at the scene and then conveyed to hospital by North West Ambulance Service. Crews remain in attendance.' Greater Manchester Police (GMP) and North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) have been contacted for more information.

Police: 1 killed, 3 injured in shooting at Royal Oak Twp. park
One person was killed and three others were wounded in a mass shooting overnight at a Royal Oak Township park, according to Michigan State Police. Troopers from the Metro Detroit Post said a 44-year-old Detroit man was killed in the shooting, which was reported at 1:45 a.m., Sunday, June 22. Three other people were treated for non-fatal gunshot wounds at three different area hospitals, police said in a post on X. State police said no arrests have been made and no motives have been determined. Detectives were gathering evidence, conducting interviews and processing the crime scene on Sunday. State police were alerted to the shooting from an open 911 call during which the dispatcher could hear banging sounds and screaming in the background. When troopers arrived at the park, they found the 44-year-old Detroit man with a gunshot would to his head. They administered first aid and he was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said. During the investigation, police said, they learned of three additional victims who were being treated for gunshot wounds at three different hospitals. They have been identified as a 33-year-old male from Detroit, a 15-year-old from Macomb and a 19-year-old from Detroit. The gender of the last two victims was not provided. State police said there was a large crowd in the park from a party when officers arrived. Officers from nearby Oak Park aided in the initial response and helped secure the scene, state police said.
