South Africa's national under-20 team will face Morocco in the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations final at the Cairo International Stadium on Sunday at 8pm, with the chance to lift the trophy for the first time.
This will be the second meeting between the two nations in a final after Morocco edged South Africa 1-0 in 1997.
That remains the only U20 Afcon title Morocco have ever won, while Amajita have yet to lift the crown – making this an opportunity 28 years in the making.
The road to the final has been challenging after losing their opening match of the tournament, but the response has been gutsy under the guidance of head coach Raymond Mdaka.
His young squad reached the decider after edging out fierce rivals Nigeria 1-0 in a tense semi-final clash in Ismailia on Thursday.
That result confirmed their growth and determination, with Amajita showing composure and maturity against a Nigerian side many tipped for the title.

South Africa's youth team have now appeared in seven editions of the U20 Afcon, reaching five semi-finals but only two finals.
In 1997, they settled for silver, and on Sunday, they will hope to go one better.
Morocco come into this match boasting a solid defensive record.
They have not conceded a goal in the knockout rounds, and will rely on a confident backline that has held firm throughout the tournament.
Their tactical discipline and ability to capitalise on limited chances make them a dangerous opponent in a final.
For Amajita, this is a golden opportunity for redemption.
Their run to the final has included tough moments, but the character shown by Mdaka's men – especially against Nigeria – suggests they are peaking at the right time.
And with continental pride on the line, the technical team will urge their players to believe they can change history.
This fixture is not only about the title – it's also about global representation.
South Africa are already one of four nations from the continent who will play in the Fifa Under-20 World Cup in Chile later this year, from September 27 to October 19.
It's another major milestone, with the Amajita becoming the second SA national team to qualify for a junior World Cup in 2025.
Earlier this year, the Under-17 side, Amajimbos, also booked their ticket to the Fifa Under-17 World Cup, which will take place in Qatar.
For coach Mdaka, the final represents a reward for months of hard work and rebuilding at youth level.
And for the players, many of whom are still relatively unknown in local football, Sunday's final is a chance to make their names resonate far beyond the borders of South Africa.
The last time a South African men's team lifted a senior CAF trophy was in 1996.
A year later, the Under-20s came close. In 2025, Amajita have the chance to finally finish what that generation started.

Three PSL players who need a fresh start this off-season
Sipho Mbule could do with a move away from Mamelodi Sundowns. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix The PSL premier domestic season has come to an end. As a result, a number of player movements are expected during the off-season transfer window. Clubs will be eager to offload underperforming players and bring in fresh talent to help them achieve their aspirations in the new campaign, which is set to get underway in August. That's why Independent Media's Mihlali Baleka looks at three players who must leave their current clubs and seek greener pastures. It is always sad when you see someone with such a talent like Sipho Mbule throwing it away with alcohol. Sekhukhune United have repeatedly released Sipho Mbule due to misconduct. Mbule allegedly arrived at training under the influence of alcohol. 😏 — m a s h è s h a 💨 (@_mashesha) May 6, 2025 Video Player is loading. He has since returned to his parent club in recent weeks, but with his contract expiring in June, it appears unlikely that he will sign a new deal at Sundowns. .@sphe_mkhulise is your Man of the Match for today after another masterful performance in midfield! 🏆 Well played, Blesser! 🙌#Sundowns #DownsLive #DStvPrem — Mamelodi Sundowns FC (@Masandawana) May 2, 2021 Sphesihle Mkhulise – Mamelodi Sundowns Mkhulise rose to prominence after being promoted to the senior team by then-coach Pitso Mosimane a few years ago. However, following Mosimane's departure, his influence faded as he struggled for consistency under former coaches Rulani Mokwena and Manqoba Mngqithi, and now under incumbent coach Miguel Cardoso. Having made just 23 appearances this season—mostly as a substitute—Mkhulise would benefit from finding a club where he can become a regular starter and revive his career. ⏰ 𝕊ℂ𝕆ℝ𝔼 𝕌ℙ𝔻𝔸𝕋𝔼 Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo has stretched the margin for The Sea Robbers! The PSL's silly season becomes even sillier with legal wrangles on the increase
John Comitis John Comitis, Cape Town City FC chairman. Photo: Muzi Ntombela/BackpagePix Image: Photo: Muzi Ntombela/BackpagePix The post-Premiership period is often referred to as the 'silly season' in South African football — a time typically characterised by rampant speculation, transfer news, and managerial changes. However, this year, the tenor of the silly season has shifted dramatically, as the PSL finds itself ensnared in a bewildering series of legal disputes that are overshadowing the traditional excitement. Less than a week ago, the PSL finally resolved the contentious matter surrounding an abandoned match between SuperSport United and Lamontville Golden Arrows that occurred in March. The game, played a few days ago, ended in a 1–1 draw. This result confirmed that SuperSport retained their Premiership status. Meanwhile, Cape Town City, who languished in 15th place in the revised 15-team league, will now face the daunting challenge of the annual PSL promotion/relegation play-offs. As if that scenario were not enough, the intrigue thickened with ongoing legal challenges from clubs within the Motsepe Foundation Championship. Cape Town Spurs and JDR Stars have taken their battle against the apparent legality of Durban City's status as winners — due to the suspected use of an ineligible player — from PSL arbitration to the jurisdiction of Safa. There remains cautious optimism that this issue could also be resolved within the week. There is also talk that other National First Division clubs are keeping a close watch on proceedings, as some may have been impacted when playing against Durban City.

All eyes will be on the one-lap star as he heads for the Rome Diamond League meeting, to see if he can repeat the feat. Junior record holder Walaza also impressed in the men's 100m race in Nairobi, though he had to settle for the runner-up spot. He got off to a good start but the athletes were called back by the starter, and though there were no disqualifications for a false start, they were made to go again and this time Walaza looked a little hesitant out of the blocks the second time. Bayanda Walaza, South Africa's teenage sprint sensation, took silver in the 100m at the Kip Keino Classic at the weekend. Image: BackpagePix
