CM Majhi announces plans to visit all Assembly segments in his government's second year

BHUBANESWAR: Day ahead of completing one year in office, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday reiterated the commitment of his government to fulfil the aspirations of people, and announced his plan to visit all Assembly constituencies to gain first-hand knowledge of the issues and address them. Inaugurating the state-level Vikas Mela 2025 at the Exhibition Ground here, on the occasion of the first anniversary of the BJP government, the chief minister said, 'In a democracy, the voice of the people is akin to the voice of God. If people cannot share their problems and struggles with their elected government, such a democracy is lifeless. After my party came to the power, I prioritised direct engagement with the public to resolve their problems on the spot. I have covered all the districts over the past year to review development works. The experience has been rewarding,' Majhi said. The chief minister said it is for the strong determination and commitment to serve the people, the state government has successfully implemented a majority of its 21 promises made during the polls. He credited the guidance and support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for aiding the efforts. He said his government has prioritised empowerment of all sections, particularly the poor, farmers, women and youth and is working diligently in this direction.

New track, mixed signals: 365 days of Majhi government

Yet, not so much can be said about his government. A major poll weapon of BJP in 2024 elections was dismantling the power structure under BJD where bureaucracy reigned supreme. A year on, little has changed in practice. Despite the tall proclamations, the levers of power continue to remain largely in the hands of the very bureaucrats who served key roles in the previous regime. Immediately after coming to power, the BJP leaders and ministers had announced to purge the bureaucrats that pulled the strings in the BJD government. They levelled charges against several officers and promised investigation and action against them. So far, there has not been any visible progress on that front. Many of the very bureaucrats have even gained central deputation and moved on. On the ground too, the impact is being felt. Governance delivery has almost remained stuck all-round and all across the state. No major development project has shown progress. Files are not moving, works stalled for long periods as the administration is still to adapt and abide by the new power structure. So much so that the CM himself has recently been forced to acknowledge the issue and instruct officials to buckle up. The party leadership, though, differs. 'The major achievement of our government is restoring the democratic values which were missing in the BJD government. While the BJD government was run by a handful of bureaucrats making the ministers redundant, our ministers enjoy full freedom to take decisions and express their views without any restriction,' state BJP chief Manmohan Samal said. Managing power The functioning of the government, particularly the council of ministers has so far reflected the teething troubles of a team still finding its feet. Coordination gaps have surfaced, with some ministers issuing contradictory statements or speaking out of turn, leading to confusion over policy matters. Ministers are often seen grappling with issues and the lack of administrative experience is evident in delayed decision-making and mixed messaging. They seem to be still coming to terms with the responsibility of handling their departments and the expectations of a public that voted for transformation. Double-engine, double horsepower Double was promised and double-engine seems to be delivered. With the party winning a historic mandate in the state, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has thrown his weight behind the Majhi government. Since the formation of government in Odisha, he has made six visits to the state, with the seventh due on June 20 to celebrate the first anniversary of the first BJP government of Odisha. Modi not only unveiled the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, held for the first time in Odisha, in January, he also threw his strength behind Majhi government's investment prowess with his presence at the Utkarsh Odisha Conclave. While most Union Ministers have kept making frequent stops in Bhubaneswar, key events of the Centre are being hosted in the state one after the other.

Odisha: Man injured in communal clash dies; Internet services suspended for 24 hrs in Bhadrak

Bhubaneswar, June 12 (UNI) The Bhadrak District Administration has suspended internet services for 24 hours, starting from 6 AM on Thursday, anticipating a law and order issue following the death of a man who was injured in a communal clash a few days ago. The administration stated that internet services would remain suspended from 6 AM Thursday to 6 AM Friday in sensitive areas including Bhadrak Municipality, Bhadrak Block, Tihidi Block, Dhamnagar Block, and Dhamnagar Notified Area Council (NAC) as a precautionary measure to maintain public order. Santosh Parida, a resident of Kasati village in Tihidi, who had sustained injuries during a communal clash on May 30, succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday at a private hospital. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi had already announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh to Parida's next of kin and promised employment for one family member. Expressing grave concern over the incident, Majhi assured that strict action would be taken against the culprits and justice would be served. The Odisha government has deployed 27 platoons of police in the affected areas. So far, 12 individuals, including the prime accused, have been arrested in connection with the incident. Efforts are also underway to organise peace committee meetings involving leaders from both communities to prevent law and order problems. Bhadrak SP Manoj Rout confirmed that the internet suspension was enforced following the death of Santosh Parida. He said multiple raids have been conducted, and 12 arrests have been made so far in the case. UNI DP ARN
