Sarawakians urged to adopt circular economy in cultural, community events
KUCHING (May 26): Sarawakians are urged to adopt a circular economy approach when organising cultural and community events.
In making the call, Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Minister Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said while showcasing cultural heritage, Sarawakians should embrace a mindset of resourcefulness and waste reduction.
'When Gawai Dayak is around the corner, we look forward to the Gawai Dayak Bazaar, just as we do with the Ramadan Bazaars when Hari Raya Aidilfitri approaches.
'Rather than simply waiting for these events, we should see them as a significant game changers that encourage us to change our mindset and reduce waste in everything we do,' he said in his speech during the Gawai Dayak Bazaar 2025 closing ceremony at MJC Batu Kawa here last night.
Dr Rundi encouraged Sarawakians to find value in their efforts by monetising their talents, produce, and even waste, citing Sarawak Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (Salcra) as an example where biomass is converted into valuable products such as animal feed, fertiliser, and renewable energy.
'All these were once waste materials, discarded products with no value. Now, they are being converted into dollars and cents,' he said.
He also highlighted the importance of understanding the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 as a roadmap for Sarawak's recovery and future growth.
By recognising its five key pillars, Sarawakians can contribute effectively to the state's sustainable development goals.
'We must each play our part and uphold environmental, social, and governance standards to ensure Sarawak is recognised for its commitment to green energy,' he said.
Meanwhile, Dr Rundi announced that the Gawai Dayak Bazaar 2025 at MJC Batu Kawa had recorded sales exceeding RM1 million over its 10-day duration.

X-FAB Sarawak to boost wafer output to 40,000
KUCHING: European chipmaker X-FAB Silicon Foundries SE is increasing its production capacity by 10,000 wafers per month with the completion of a major capacity expansion project at its Sarawak wafer fabrication (fab) in Sama Jaya Free Industrial Zone here. Monthly production by X-FAB Sarawak Sdn Bhd will increase to 40,000 wafers from 30,000 wafers. The expansion project involved the construction of a new building and clean room, which were completed late last year, and the focus in the first half of 2025 was on equipping the new clean room. 'All the equipment has been delivered and is at different stages of installation and qualification,' X-FAB Silicon Foundries said in a statement on its financial results for the second quarter of 2025 (2Q25). 'A number of tools and machines have successfully completed qualification, allowing for a phased ramp-up of X-FAB's 180nm complimentary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) production from the 3Q25 onwards. 'The expansion provides sufficient capacity to serve current and future customer demand for this popularity technology, which is key to supporting X-FAB's CMOS and microsystems business going forward,' the statement added. For 2Q25, X-FAB posted revenue of US$215.3mil, up 5% year-on-year (y-o-y) and 5% quarter-on-quarter (q-o-q). Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation stood at US$51.6mil, up 7% y-o-y and 4% q-o-q. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to officiate the opening of the new building and clean room on Sept 12. X-FAB Sarawak, formerly known as 1st Silicon, opened its plant in 1998 as Malaysia's first semiconductor manufacturing facility. 1st Silicon later merged with X-FAB and was renamed X-FAB Sarawak in 2006. The Sarawak operation currently has about 1,500 employees, 90% of whom are Sarawakians. X-FAB is a global foundry group providing a comprehensive set of specialty technologies and design intellectual property to enable its customers to develop world-leading semiconductor products that are manufacturered at X-FAB's six-wafer fabs located in Sarawak, Germany, France and the United States. With its expertise in analog/mixed-signal technologies, microsystems/MEMS and silicon carbide, X-FAB is the development and manufacturing partner for its customers, primarily serving the automotive, industrial and medical end markets. In 2023, X-FAB Silicon Foundries launched a three-year expansion programme with total investment of more than US$1bil for its wafer fabs in Sarawak, France and the United States. According to Rudi De Winter, the company's chief executive officer, the majority of these investments were made in the expansion of the company's popular 180nm CMOS platform, for which demand has been holding up well. 'The additional capacity is essential to support the needs of our customers and the strong new business pipeline going forward,' he said in the company's 2024 annual report. He said X-FAB France had made good progress in ramping up production with the expansion project. In addition to complementing the 180nm CMOS capacity of X-FAB Sarawak, X-FAB France's expansion will also support the business of X-FAB's new state-of-the-art 110nm VCD-on-SOI technology. X-FAB's three-year programme to expand manufacturing capacity across the group was completed in 2Q25. 'As X-FAB's business is no longer constrained by capacity and factory cycle times have shortened, customers place orders later than usual and more frequently at short notice, resulting in a reduced visibility. 'The backlog for 2Q25 amounted to US$412.9mil, compared to US$386.7mil at the end of the previous quarter,' said the chipmaker.

Indonesian border post chief: Speed up Serikin ICQS Complex construction to ease cross-border travel, boost ties

KUCHING (Aug 11): Construction of the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex in Serikin should be expedited to ease cross-border travel as well as boost economic and tourism ties between Sarawak and West Kalimantan. In saying this, Pos Lintas Batas Negara (PLBN) Jagoi Babang chief administrator Misdo Jerry Purba pointed out the facility is crucial to enable passport processing at the border and replace the current border pass system, which limits travel to Bau. 'At present, residents of Jagoi Babang heading to Kuching have to go through Aruk, which takes more than two hours. With ICQS Serikin, the trip could take less than an hour,' she said during a recent visit by Deputy Minister for Transport (Riverine and Marine) Datuk Henry Harry Jinep to PLBN Jagoi Babang in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. She said Kuching is a preferred destination for shopping, healthcare, and air travel for many in Jagoi Babang and neighbouring areas such as Siding and Seluas. 'The journey to Pontianak takes seven to eight hours, compared to only one hour to Kuching. 'Having a proper ICQS here would be a far more practical gateway for border communities to access healthcare and economic opportunities in Kuching. 'Without ICQS Serikin, residents from West Kalimantan must take the longer route via the Aruk-Biawak entry point, which can take more than two and a half hours,' she explained. Misdo stressed it is vital for border inspections at Serikin to meet international standards and allow the use of passports, regardless of whether the building is large or modest in size. She described the facility as long-awaited by people on both sides of the border and hoped construction could begin by the end of this year. 'Our hope is very high because this project is important for the future of both countries,' she said. She pointed out cultural and family ties between Jagoi Babang and Bau remain strong. 'During Gawai Sowa and Gawai Dayak, we helped about 700 people with valid documents cross the border to meet their families. 'With passport use through ICQS Serikin, it will be even easier to maintain these relationships,' she said. According to her, Fridays are the busiest days at PLBN Jagoi Babang due to the Serikin market. 'On Fridays, we see between 100 and 150 visitors from Jagoi Babang, compared to 50 to 60 on regular weekdays. Once passport services are available, this could rise to 500 a day. 'This would not only boost market activity but also bring more customers to local shops and services,' she said. Tourism could also grow, she added, with waterfalls, rivers, and other natural attractions drawing more visitors. 'Direct transport routes like Singkawang to Kuching could be introduced, offering faster links for both business and leisure. 'Better connectivity can attract more investment, encourage tourism, and create more opportunities for small businesses,' she said. The Serikin ICQS initiative began in 2018 through a series of discussions led by Henry with relevant authorities including the Bau District Office, Bau District Council, Immigration Department, Customs Department, Ministry of Home Affairs, Public Works Department (JKR), Rural Water Supply Department, police, army, and project consultant. Meetings were held at the Bau District Office along with site visits to the border area as well as working visits to Indonesia's PLBN Jagoi Babang. Minister calls to preserve handcrafted works, safeguard Iban heritage

MIRI (Aug 11): The Iban community, especially women, have been urged to protect their rich tradition of crafting handmade handicrafts – creations that carry far greater cultural and artistic value than mass-produced items. Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said the rapid advancement of machines and faster production methods has made it increasingly difficult for the Orang Ulu community, including the Iban, to sustain traditional craftsmanship. 'If we fail to protect this cultural heritage, both present and future generations will lose it,' he cautioned. Lee, also the Senadin assemblyman, stressed that handcrafted works are one-of-a-kind, often fetching higher prices because of their uniqueness and the skill required to produce them. 'Most products today are machine-made, but handicrafts created by hand have their own uniqueness and are valued more highly,' he said during the Serakup Indu Dayak Sarawak (SIDS) Miri fundraising dinner here yesterday. He noted that in the past, the Orang Ulu and the Iban communities relied solely on manual skills to create their works – a painstaking process that significantly enhanced the value of each item. 'This is an industry worth focusing on, one that celebrates traditional craftsmanship and distinctive designs. It is important that we pass these skills to the younger generation,' he said. Lee also pointed out that handmade items have the potential to command higher prices when marketed online, with the opportunity to reach international buyers. Thus, he called on the older generations to pass down their knowledge and skills to the youth so these traditions continue to thrive. Lee also encouraged the Iban community to promote and preserve their traditional food-making methods, including using bamboo to cook signature delicacies. 'I hope to see SIDS Miri organise a food festival that showcases the Iban's unique way of making traditional food one day,' he said.
