TDB withdraws from Vallasadya amid protests, Palliyoda Seva Sangham to continue paid feast
Confirming the move, TDB president P.S. Prasanth said that all bookings made through the board for the feast to be held on Sunday had been cancelled with immediate effect. 'As the authority responsible for administering the temple, the board does not wish to turn Aranmula into a site of discord. We have therefore decided to cancel the programme,' he said.
Meanwhile, the Palliyoda Seva Sangham (PSS) will proceed with its paid feast for participants of the KSRTC Budget Tourism Cell's package tours.'Due to limited seat availability, online booking for the special pass (paid sadya) has been suspended for this month. Bookings for September will begin by mid-August,' informed K.V. Sambadevan, president of the PSS, in a statement.
Strong protests
The board's earlier decision to conduct Vallasadya within the temple premises without involving the traditional Palliyodams and while collecting money from devotees had sparked strong protests from the PSS. Tensions escalated when members of the PSS staged a protest inside the temple as guests under the TDB's scheme began arriving.
A last-ditch effort by the devaswom board to hold a conciliatory meeting on Friday also failed, after the PSS boycotted the talks citing that some of their representatives were denied entry. The board, however, maintained that it had not barred anyone, but merely asked to restrict participation to the permitted number of delegates.
'We had already accepted bookings for Sunday and requested the PSS to accommodate our guests at the auditorium outside the temple for one last time,' said a board official. 'However, the PSS was unwilling to relent. To avoid any disturbances inside the temple, the board has decided to cancel the package altogether,' he added.
Grand feast
Vallasadya is a revered tradition in Aranmula, wherein a grand feast is offered to Lord Parthasarathy and served ceremonially to the oarsmen of Palliyodams, ornate snake boats that arrive from various villages along the Pampa river. The oarsmen are ritually welcomed at the temple ghats and then led inside for the feast.
Currently, devotees wishing to sponsor a Vallasadya must do so through the PSS office after obtaining approval from one of the 52 Palliyodams participating in the tradition.

Kannur University's ‘Partition Horror Day' directive sparks protests
Kannur University's directive to college principals to submit action plans for seminars and cultural programmes on August 14 to mark 'Partition Horror Day' on the Governor's instructions has drawn sharp criticism from teachers' organisations and students. They alleged it was part of the Sangh Parivar agenda of 'saffronising' campuses. The Government College Teachers Organisation (GCTO), Kannur zonal committee, condemned the directive, calling it a politically motivated move. GCTO zonal committee president P.S. Prakash said the circular issued on August 11 by the Directorate of Student Services on behalf of the varsity Registrar had instructed colleges to organise campus programmes on the eve of the Independence Day. 'The foundation of India's independence is the selfless struggle of our great leaders, and ignoring this to promote politically driven stories will never be accepted by the academic community,' said varsity Senate member Mohammed Ashfas. The Kannur University Senators' Forum echoed similar views, saying that the move was part of a Sangh Parivar agenda and urged principals not to implement it. Forum convener Shino P. Jose said that the academic community would not allow attempts to obscure the freedom struggle led by Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and the Indian National Congress. The Democratic Youth Federation of India Kannur district committee organised a protest demonstration in Kannur against the Chancellor's order. A copy of the order was burned as a mark of protest.

Permission for idol installation on Sabarimala temple premises revoked, TDB tells Kerala HC
Kochi: Travancore devaswom board (TDB) has informed high court that the permission granted to a private individual to install a Panchaloha Vigraham (idol) of Lord Ayyappa within the Sabarimala temple premises has been revoked. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The submission was made in response to suo motu proceedings initiated by HC based on a report submitted by the Sabarimala special commissioner. The report stated that the TDB had granted permission to E K Sahadevan, chairman of Lotus Multispeciality Hospital and IVF Fertility Centre, Erode, to install the idol. It further pointed out that Sahadevan had allegedly circulated pamphlets seeking donations for the idol installation, directing contributions to the account of 'Rotary Freedom India Trust'. In an affidavit filed before HC on Wednesday, the TDB stated that the devaswom commissioner had been directed to initiate legal action against Sahadevan for allegedly collecting funds by misrepresenting facts. Meanwhile, the Sabarimala chief police coordinator submitted a report stating that a criminal case had been registered against Sahadevan by the Pampa police, based on a complaint filed by the TDB on July 31. However, the govt pleader sought additional time to obtain instructions regarding the extent of funds amassed by Sahadevan in connection with the idol installation. Considering the request, the bench of Justices V Raja Vijayaraghavan and K V Jayakumar adjourned the matter to Sept 10.
