WB confirms 2027 release for ‘The Hunt for Gollum'

Muscat Daily11-05-2025

Warner Bros has officially announced the release date for its upcoming 'Lord of the Rings' spinoff film, 'The Hunt for Gollum'. The much-anticipated prequel is scheduled to hit cinemas on December 17, 2027.
Set before the events of Peter Jackson's acclaimed 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy, the film is based on the appendices written by J.R.R. Tolkien and follows Aragorn's secret mission, commissioned by Gandalf the Grey, to track and capture Gollum, who is in possession of the One Ring.
Andy Serkis is confirmed to reprise his iconic role as Gollum and is also rumoured to direct the project. While Ian McKellen is speculated to return as Gandalf, there has been no official confirmation regarding Viggo Mortensen's involvement as Aragorn.
The announcement comes amid a mixed legacy of 'Lord of the Rings' spinoffs. Peter Jackson's 'Hobbit trilogy', though initially promising, was criticised for being unnecessarily stretched. More recently, Amazon's 'The Rings of Power' series drew a lukewarm response, with early intrigue giving way to audience disappointment.
With the franchise's track record in recent years, fans are approaching 'The Hunt for Gollum' with cautious optimism. Whether this latest foray into Middle-earth will recapture the magic of the original films remains to be seen.
One thing is certain: Tolkien enthusiasts will be watching closely as Middle-earth returns to the big screen in 2027.

N America moviegoers embrace 'Sinners' on Easter weekend

North American moviegoers feasted on Warner Bros.' vampire thriller "Sinners" as it debuted to an estimated $45.6 million over the Easter holiday weekend, analysts said Sunday. The first original film from Ryan Coogler -- director of Oscar-nominated "Black Panther" -- has Michael B. Jordan playing twins who encounter a sinister force as they return home to Jim Crow-era Mississippi. Hailee Steinfeld and Delroy Lindo also star in the music-driven thriller. Riding on "near-perfect reviews," according to the Hollywood Reporter, "Sinners" outperformed another Warner Bros. blockbuster, "A Minecraft Movie," which kept up its solid run with $41.3 million, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations reported. "Minecraft," co-produced by Legendary Pictures, has recorded $344.6 million in domestic ticket sales and $376.2 million internationally for a total haul of $720.8 million in just three weeks out. Analysts say it could be the year's first billion-dollar blockbuster. Starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, "Minecraft" already ranks as the all-time most successful film adaptation from a video game. "The King of Kings," an animated telling of Jesus's life from indie media company Angel Studios, did well over Easter weekend, scoring an estimated $17.3 million in ticket sales. Oscar Isaac, as Jesus, leads the voice cast, along with Kenneth Branagh, Pierce Brosnan, Uma Thurman and Mark Hamill. 20th Century thriller "The Amateur" slipped one spot to fourth place, taking in $7.2 million. Rami Malek plays a nerdy CIA analyst who turns vicious as he tracks down his wife's killers. Rachel Brosnahan, Laurence Fishburne and Jon Bernthal also star. And in fifth place, also down one spot from last weekend, was A24's "Warfare," at $4.9 million. Based partly on the experiences of co-director Ray Mendoza as a navy SEAL, the film follows a platoon of soldiers moving amid high tension through hostile territory. —AFP

Blue Origin flight with all-female crew make history

Florida: A group of six women, including American singer-songwriter Katy Perry, blasted off into the upper limits of the Earth's atmosphere on Monday on a rocket from Blue Origin, the space company owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Bezos's fiancee Lauren Sanchez, a US author and philanthropist, also joined the passengers on board the flight, which blasted off from western Texas at around 8:30 am (1330 GMT). The flight took around 10 minutes and the rocket returned safely to the ground by parachute. The remaining crew included TV presenter Gayle King, film producer Kerianne Flynn, former NASA aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe and Amanda Nguyen, founder of a campaign group against sexual violence. Monday's venture features the first all-woman space crew since Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova's historic solo flight in 1963. 10-minute flight to the edge of space The passengers were carried more than 100 kilometres (60 miles) above the Earth's surface — beyond the Karman line, the internationally recognised boundary of space. The fully automated craft rose vertically before the crew capsule separated in mid-flight, before returning to the ground in a fall braked by parachutes and a retro rocket. Perry, known for hits such as "Firework" and "California Gurls," and her co-passengers had the chance to experience weightlessness for a brief period during the trip. She recently told Elle magazine that she was going on the trip for her daughter, Daisy, whom she shares with actor Orlando Bloom, "to inspire her to never have limits on her dreams." "I'm just so excited to see the inspiration through her eyes and the light in her eyes when she sees that rocket go, and she goes back to school the next day and says 'Mom went to space,'" Perry added. Space tourism taking off Other prominent figures among the 52 previous Blue Origin passengers include longtime "Star Trek" star William Shatner. But Blue Origin, which does not publicly say how much such a trip costs, aims in future to bring space tourists into orbit, competing directly with Elon Musk's SpaceX.
