Assam Government to open 80 more schools in tea garden areas
Interacting with the headmasters of the Tea Garden Model Schools and Adarsha Vidyalayas in Guwahati on Thursday (July 10, 2025), the Chief Minister said that with the vision of bringing about qualitative changes in the academic landscape of the tea garden areas, the State Government has decided to set up 200 model schools in 800 tea estates across the State.
Accordingly, in November 2022, foundation stones for 118 schools were laid, which are functioning at present in the tea garden areas. He said that considering the success of these model schools, the government will inaugurate 80 more such schools in the tea garden areas.
He also emphasised encouraging the enrollment of students from different communities in the tea garden schools to ensure better assimilation. 'The government is also committed to enhancing the infrastructure of the schools along with improving the service conditions of teachers posted in the model schools,' Mr. Sarma added.
Taking note of the occasional dropouts, the Chief Minister said that the government is considering the option of introducing a mid-day meal for the students of Classes IX and X, which is now available for students from nursery to Class 8.
He said that the government will take steps to introduce smart boards and smart classrooms in the model schools. The Chief Minister also took stock of the teachers' strength, pass percentage and student attendance in the model schools.
He said that students from various communities should also be encouraged to enrol in the tea garden model schools, as it will help in assimilation and fostering harmonious relationships with students belonging to different communities. The Chief Minister also took stock of the functioning of the 57 Adarsha Vidyalayas in the State.

He said the Adarsha Vidyalayas were set up with a vision to nurture talent, values and creativity through high-quality education, and the government is putting its efforts into elevating the quality of education in remote areas.
Mr. Sarma said the government will take steps to formalise one year of compulsory apprentice training for the B.Ed students in tea garden model schools and Adarsha Vidyalayas.
He also said that to ensure the attendance of students in remote areas, the government will provide bicycles to students from Class VI onwards. To motivate students to attend school and take care of their health, the Chief Minister said that the government is considering introducing a School Breakfast Programme along with mandatory health checkups for students.

1 2 Guwahati: In a decisive move to address the escalating human-elephant conflict, the state govt has launched the Gaja Mitra initiative, deploying rapid response teams across 80 conflict zones in eight districts. These teams, comprising local villagers, will be active during the peak winter season, aiming to curb the alarming rates of human and elephant fatalities. The 80 identified human-elephant conflict "hotspots" are in eight districts — Goalpara, Udalguri, Nagaon, Baksa, Sonitpur, Golaghat, Jorhat, and Biswanath. Assam has witnessed over 1,400 human and 1,209 elephant deaths from such conflicts between 2000 and 2023, marking one of the highest tolls nationwide. The initiative follows a critical report from the Wildlife Institute of India, highlighting a crisis driven by habitat loss, electrocution, railway accidents, and retaliatory killings. The scheme focuses on voluntary, community-driven surveillance and response, ensuring that those most familiar with the landscape and patterns of elephant movement can respond quickly and effectively. The official added that to discourage elephants from entering villages and farmlands, the scheme includes the creation and restoration of local elephant habitats stocked with their preferred food, such as bamboo and Napier grass. Apart from the Gaja Mitra scheme, NFR is carrying out the installation of an AI-enabled Intrusion Detection System (IDS) to detect the movement of elephants on the train lines so that the speed of the trains can be controlled to protect the elephants. The Habaipur-Lumding section and the Kamakhya-Mirza section of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) are the two sections where the Railways have completed the installation of the AI-enabled IDS and started its operation to detect the movement of elephants on the train lines. School Education Minister participates in SLAS review meeting in Namakkal
Minister for School Education, Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi participated in a review meeting on the State Level Achievement Survey (SLAS) in Namakkal on Monday. The survey was conducted from February 4 to 6 for students studying in classes 3, 5, and 8 in government and government-aided schools in Namakkal district for the academic year 2024-25. A total of 20,632 students in 1,085 schools in the district were part of the survey. The survey report was published on the EMIS website on May 27 this year. Based on this report, 61.3% of students have passed in class III, 55% in class V and 39.6% in class VIII. The overall achievement of students in these three classes was 52%, securing 33rd rank in the State. A review meeting was conducted with the headmasters of the schools that were lagging behind in the SLAS survey at a private college near Rasipuram on Monday. Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi presided over the meeting. The Minister said that teachers should work to improve students' ability to answer questions based on learning outcomes in the subjects they teach. During Covid-19, there was a learning gap due to lockdown. To reduce the gap, State Government introduced initiatives such as Illam Thedi Kalvi, Ennum Ezhuthum Thittam and Manarkeni App for students from classes 1 to 5. A skill movement was established for students from classes 6 to 9 to achieve basic and essential skills, the Minister said. Stating that there are 611 smart classrooms in 574 primary schools in Namakkal district, the Minister said that high-tech labs were made available in 136 middle schools in the district. Earlier, these facilities were only available in high and higher secondary schools. Teachers should make full use of all these facilities and schemes while teaching students, Mr. Poyyamozhi added. In the meeting, District Collector Durgamoorthi, Chief Educational Officer (CEO) P. Maheswari and officials from concerned departments participated.

Technical & infrastructure constraints in running additional MMTS trains to Cherlapalli Station: SCR
South Central Railway (SCR) on Monday (August 4, 2025) has admitted to 'some technical and infrastructure constraints due to which additional MMTS suburban train services were not introduced from Secunderabad, Hyderabad and Kacheguda Railway Stations to the new Cherlapalli passenger terminal.' 'A thorough examination is needed for feasibility for introduction of MMTS services in these routes,' informed chief public relations officer (CPRO) A. Sridhar in a rejoinder issued to the story - 'All aboard the hype, but mind the gaps' published on Friday (August 1, 2025). He did not specify the constraints. Approach roads require widening Claiming that the story had conveyed an 'incorrect picture on an important matter concerning railways' and to 'dispel the wrong impression on the readers', the official said that the factual position is that both the approach roads to the terminal —towards platform one and nine — require widening which comes under purview of the State Government. Regular coordination meetings are being conducted with them and the State Government is making efforts to widen both the approach roads. The government will also be requested to give road connectivity to the station through the railway land by clearing the defunct railway quarters near Mahalakshminagar, he said. Scattered material to be removed The CPRO said the station has adequate lifts and escalators and all platforms are connected with foot over bridge (FOB). Ramp also is available in the circulating area of south side of the new terminal building. Care would be taken to remove any scattered materials from the work site after the completion of works on the platforms, he promised. Platform shelter not available on platform 4/5 Platform shelter is available except on platform 4/5, where the work of providing cover is underway and will be completed by the end of this month. The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) has been running 380 bus trips on nine routes to and fro Cherlapalli station and 30 buses are allowed to be parked at station premises during the night for operating the early morning services. TGSRTC will also be approached to increase the number of services, said the official. Malkajgiri station improvement With regards to improvement of infrastructure at Malkajgiri station, works are already under progress under 'Amrit Bharat' station scheme with the cost of ₹27.61 crore and is likely to be completed by December. The Lingampalli station redevelopment is under consideration of the Railway Board and the proposal for development of Nagalapalli station is being prepared along with Master plan of twin city rail network, added the CPRO.
