Who is Mason Howell? What to know about US Open high school amateur Show Caption Hide Caption Rory McIlroy on motivation after Masters win Rory McIlroy admits he didn't expect how hard it would be to find motivation after his Masters triumph. USGA The 2025 U.S. Open is less than a day away from the start of the first round, and the anticipation is building. The world's top golfers are preparing to compete for the prestigious title at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, and this year they are joined by 17-year-old Mason Howell. Howell qualified for the tournament by posting an impressive 18-under par during a local qualifying event at Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta, a highly competitive event that is part of a series of qualifying opportunities held nationwide. As a high school junior (graduating in 2026), Howell is now the youngest golfer in the 156-player field. He will tee off on the 10th hole alongside Chris Gotterup and Joakim Lagergren. If Howell manages to make the cut after the second round, he will join an elite group of only three golfers who have ever achieved this feat at this age, making him the third youngest to do so. He would be the first since Michael Thorbjornsen, who was 17 years and 8 months old when he made the cut in 2019. More: US Open winners by year: Complete list of champions Who is Mason Howell? Sporting CP won't succumb to ‘blackmail and insults' in Viktor Gyokeres transfer saga
Sporting CP's club president insists he has received no offers for Viktor Gyokeres and says his side will not succumb to 'blackmail and insults' as speculation over the future of their star striker continues. The Sweden international, 27, is one of Europe's hottest properties this summer following a spectacular season in which he scored 54 goals in 52 games. Advertisement The Athletic reported earlier this year that Arsenal were developing a strong interest in Gyokeres while Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim remains a major admirer having worked together at Sporting before the Portuguese departed last winter. Reports in Portugal have claimed that Gyokeres could go on strike to force a move away amid suggestions that the club had previously agreed to let him leave if a set valuation was met. Frederico Varandas insists that is not the case, however, and has been moved to comment publicly on the saga. 'I want to make one thing clear: We at Sporting have common sense,' Varandas said in quotes carried by Portuguese newspaper Record. 'We said two things (at the start of the season): that we would not demand €100m and that the value would depend on the performance of Viktor. 'How did he perform? 63 goals, 17 assists (club and country), fantastic form, one of the best seasons in the history of Portuguese football. Even then, Sporting will not demand his release clause. 'But people should know that threats, blackmail and insults will not work with me. I can guarantee one thing: Viktor Gyokeres won't leave here for €60million plus €10m in add-ons. He won't, and the game the agent is playing will only make the situation worse. As of now, we haven't had one offer for him.' Gyokeres has scored 97 goals in 102 games since moving to Sporting from Coventry City in 2023. He helped them lift the Primeira Liga title last year and win a league and cup double this time around. He scored only one goal for Brighton & Hove Albion before departing on loan to both Swansea City and later Coventry. Coventry made the move permanent in 2021 and he went on to score 43 times in 117 games. The Swede joined Sporting for a club-record fee in July 2023, signing a five-year contract. Analysis by Tim Spiers from The Transfer Radar 2025 Like Luca Toni, Chris Wood and Larry David, Gyokeres has bloomed a little later in his career than most. Why has it taken a few extra years for him to be compared to Erling Haaland, or to be talked about as a candidate to beat Lionel Messi's single-season goalscoring record? Advertisement Well, primarily because Gyokeres, similar to Harry Kane, has needed to work hard to improve his game along a career path that has taken him from Brommapojkarna in Sweden to Sporting in Portugal, via stints at Brighton & Hove Albion, Swansea and Coventry. He is pretty quick but not especially rapid, his technique is good but he is not particularly skilful. What he possesses — again, like Kane — is an unflinching desire to improve and score goals. Coaches will tell you of a character who could be grumpy or stubborn, but also of someone who needed faith shown in him. Since being made a main central striker for the first time at Coventry (having found his path blocked at Brighton, where he was often shunted out wide) he has thrived. Give him room and half a chance to shoot and the chances are, the ball will soon be in the back of the net. But strikers Carlos Vinicius, Islam Slimani and, to an extent, Darwin Nunez have struggled to transfer their Primeira Liga form in Portugal to the Premier League. Is Gyokeres different? His hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League suggests so. (Carlos Costa/AFP via Getty Images)

He's just a high school junior, and he just qualified for the 2025 US Open
Mason Howell may not be done with high school, but he'll be headed to the 2025 U.S. Open. The 17-year-old high school junior from Georgia punched his ticket to the 125th edition of the PGA Tour major after magnificent play in the qualifiers. Advertisement "That was one of the greatest moments of my life," Howell said after the event. Howell competed in the U.S. Open final qualifying at Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta and breezed through the course Monday. The day is dubbed "Golf's Longest Day," as players have to play two rounds of golf in one day, although that was hardly an issue for Howell. He shot 18-under-par for the day to finish tied for first with Jackson Buchanan in the qualifying event, shooting a 63 in both rounds. Even more impressive was Howell didn't have a single bogey during the day. He birdied on the par-5 18th to cap off the day in front of several amateur and PGA Tour players older than him, including 2007 Masters champion Zach Johnson. Advertisement Only the top five finishers in the event in Atlanta moved onto the U.S. Open, and Howell now rides high momentum into playing at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania. Who is Mason Howell? A 17-year-old from Thomasville, Georgia, Howell has become one of the top rising young golfers. He currently is a junior at Brookwood High School, scheduled to graduate in 2026. Even though his graduation is a year away, he's already committed to play at the University of Georgia in college. The Tallahassee Democrat, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported in July 2022 Howell first picked up a golf club at age three and has played in tournaments since he was six-years-old. Advertisement "Tournament golf has been a big part of my life," Howell said at the time. "I would encourage kids to start playing golf and get it into it because it's one of the greatest sports you can play." Last month, he was part of the boy's golf team that won the Georgia state championship, the program's fourth title in five years. Even more impressive, Howell won the low medalist at the state championship, winning the honor in a playoff. Howell is currently ranked eighth in the boys American Junior Golf Association rankings, but he entered Monday as the 496th ranked amateur. In his amateur career, he won the 2023 Billy Horschel Junior Championship and has 11 top-10 finishes in his young career. He also won the Future Masters Tournament in Alabama in 2023. The 2025 U.S. Open will be Howell's first major event. It takes place June 12-15. Advertisement Editor's note: This story has been updated with additional information.
