Canada will recognize Palestinian state in September, Prime Minister Carney says
'Canada has long been committed to a two-state solution, an independent, viable and sovereign Palestinian state living side by side with the State of Israel in peace and security,' said Carney, flanked by Foreign Minister Anita Anand.
The move follows similar announcements by France, which has said it will recognize a Palestinian state in September, and the UK, which has said that it will too if Israel does not meet conditions that include agreeing to a ceasefire in Gaza.

Nova Scotia releases plan on future transport needs for Halifax and surrounding area
HALIFAX — The Nova Scotia government has released its plan to address the transportation needs of the most populous part of the province. Public Works Minister Fred Tilley says the goal of the Regional Transportation Plan is to transform the transportation system for Halifax and those areas within an hour's drive of the port city. Tilley says the government has identified several projects for study, including an inter-municipal bus service, a core street review in Halifax, options for a new harbour bridge, new ferry terminals and new highway corridors. I push Keir Starmer to be more extroverted in Scotland
Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar has said he pushes Sir Keir Starmer to be more 'extroverted' when he comes to Scotland. Mr Sarwar said he speaks to the Prime Minister every two or three weeks, often calling at weekends when they both have more free time. The Scottish Labour leader also said he will not engage in any 'back room stitch-ups' with other parties if he becomes first minister following the Scottish election next year. At an Edinburgh Fringe event in front of a live audience, Mr Sarwar was interviewed by Catherine Salmond, editor of The Herald. He was pressed on his relationship with the UK Labour leader and whether Sir Keir was comfortable coming north of the border. He said: 'We're different personalities… I am much more probably conversational, out there, a bit of an extrovert. 'I think it's safe to say he's a bit more introverted in that sense.' Mr Sarwar said Sir Keir had become more relaxed and confident in the five years since becoming Labour leader. He said Sir Keir was more relaxed in Scotland than in other parts of the UK, adding: 'I think we've built up a rapport, probably because I am pushing to be a bit more of extroverted than perhaps he is in other parts.' He said he spoke to the Prime Minister around 'two or three times a month'. However he said the early part of Labour's response to the war in Gaza had been 'challenging' for his party, referring to an interview the Prime Minister gave where he said Israel had the 'right' to withhold power and water from Gaza in response to the October 7 attacks. 'I think the early part was challenging, he himself accepts that what he said in the LBC interview wasn't right,' Mr Sarwar said. Discussing the Middle East further, he said: 'I think we have to be doing much more to hold the Israeli government to account. 'To provide evidence that there is not any components that are being used in a proactive way in Gaza.' Looking ahead to the 2026 Scottish election, Mr Sarwar said he was putting his 'heart, soul energy, time' into winning. He said it would be a 'very close election' likely to result in a 'parliament of minorities'. Rather than doing deals such as the SNP-Green powersharing agreement, he said he would 'work progressively with the parliament' if he became first minister. He said: 'We are looking to form a minority Scottish Labour government that does no kind of back room stich-up but instead moves to govern based on what we promised.'

'Don't fall for their lies': Herzog slams int'l media on falling for Hamas starvation propaganda
Herzog expressed outrage that staged images of hunger in Gaza were gaining more global attention than videos of hostages Evyatar David and Rom Braslavsky. President Isaac Herzog urged the world "not to fall for Hamas's lies," during a diplomatic meeting with Estonian President Alar Karis on Wednesday. The Israeli president and First Lady, Michal, attended the meeting at the Presidential Palace in Tallinn, Estonia's capital. During the meeting, Herzog expressed outrage that staged images of hunger in Gaza were gaining more global attention than videos of hostages Evyatar David and Rom Braslavsky. Standing beside Karis, Herzog displayed photos of the two emaciated hostages, who remain captive under Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ). "This is an image of Evyatar David, a young kid who was at the party, at the Nova Festival, and he is now skin and bones. His situation is life-threatening. And you see the fat hand of his captor – they have food there. The other room is full of food – the hostages who came out of this tunnel told us," Herzog stated. "And this is Rom Braslavski, another hostage they aired in a video two days ago. All the other hostages – they are in a life-threatening situation," he added. Herzog emphasized Israel's recent humanitarian efforts in Gaza while stressing the urgency of resolving the hostage crisis: "Therefore, in order to resolve the situation, we tell the world: You want to move forward? Get a hostage deal, get a ceasefire. In the last two weeks, Israel has overhauled the entire approach to the humanitarian situation, pushing in major quantities of humanitarian aid, 30,000 tons in the last week, 30 tons only by air drops yesterday, hundreds of trucks." He also criticized the United Nations for logistical failures, stating, "The UN is holding hundreds of trucks, almost 800 trucks. The UN can distribute and is failing to distribute." Herzog then drew attention to a staged Gaza photo that appeared in a German newspaper, depicting Gazans holding empty pots for the cameras rather than waiting for food distribution. "Instead of that, we see a PR campaign like this one revealed in a German newspaper. You see a photographer staging the Gaza people to show that they are lacking food. This is staged. We don't shy away from the humanitarian need to help the people of Gaza, but we ask the world not to fall for the lies. Condemn Hamas and say to Hamas, 'You want to move on? Get the hostages out.'"
